Mr. Shillster, you need to learn what HTTPS is before you continue shilling VPNs. With HTTPS traffic, the MOST anyone can see is what IP addresses you are making requests to. They cannot see the actual URL. They cannot see the data you send to or receive from the server. A VPN does not do anything to protect you in a public place with any website that you should trust to begin with because if a website is not using HTTPS, you really shouldn't trust it to begin with.

I went to DC on a school field trip shortly after he was caught. We spent a few hours in the FBI building doing tours and such. The Agent giving our group a tour was excited to show us a display of Unabomber stuff they had just built. I think he was just sentenced recently, so they had some of the actual bomb fragments and letters in a display. Several of us started asking about the bomb in different ways that the Agent answered, saying he couldn't go too in depth. So we asked a different question with the same theme.
And that's how a group of middle schoolers learned how to make pipe bombs from an FBI agent.

He would do things like setting off a small explosive on the river bank, waiting for the police to leave, then going back and measuring the size of the crater to see how effective his bomb had been. He was still in high school, and got caught the day he launched a small rocket using the chimney of his parent's house. I often wonder what happened to him. My mom's first husband was briefly suspected of being the Unabomber. It started after the bombing at the computer store in Salt Lake City, where they were living. He was someone who moved around and travelled a lot, and he had, by sheer coincidence, been in every other city a bombing took place around the time of each bombing. He also had a criminal record, that included using a homemade explosive to attempt to escape from some facility as a juvenile. He also had a very vague resemblance to the famous sketch, and that was enough for them to follow him and my mom for about a month. They eventually brought him in to give handwriting samples, and lost interest in him after that. My mom wishes they had just started with that, and spared them all the stress of being under suspicion. This has been a fun thing to go over with her, even though it was far from a fun time in her life when it was happening, so thank you Simon, Jen and co. for making this, looking forward to part 2!

In reference to the wood/ED theory, I don't think it was a case of simple juvenile thinking. I believe they purposefully associate unknown suspects to typically embarrassing or shameful ideas as a way to upset said suspect & hopefully prompt them to make a mistake &/or reveal themselves. Basically, they're trying to trigger the suspect

The mere existence of a serial bomber would encourage copycats. I don't think "giving into his demands," which weren't anything particularly glamorous, would necessarily increase the likelihood of copycats. And even if it would, you have to weigh that against the potential benefits of publishing the letters. Either he would hold true to his word and stop killing people, at which point you've saved lives, or you could use the published letters to gain information and catch him. I think both of those very real possibilities clearly outweigh the hypothetical "precedent" you were talking about. You have to save lives now in the one way you know you can.

I would normally agree that it's very possible thay they would be setting a dangerous precident by giving the terrorists what they want, but I dont think it matters in this case for one simple reason. In the mass surveillance present, the unabomber wouldn't be able to exisit, at least not in the same way he did. He would have been recorded so many times if he had done this in present day, and would have been caught incredibly quick.

    • @migga86
      @migga86 2 года назад +2

If all you have to go on is a hoodied man, you're in no way faster today than back then. Also it didn't put a precident because people demanding change don't seem to have the necessary patience required for it. Furthermore putting your manifesto out is a lot easier today and newspapers have long since lost a lot of their influence. They have basically returned to an interest group newsletter where you'll reach a specific circle of people.
That being said I'd guess that since cash is going out of fashion and local shops get closed more often, that tracing material required for bombs became increasingly easier since then. That being said we'll still have problems catching anyone before their first victim.

    *Kidding of course 🤣
*Also ; I sometimes think they include impotence in their public profiles to kind of goad the suspect into firing off of an ill judged reply that might give away some thing about themselves. I know it sounds kind of schoolyardish but when you're running short of ideas desperation probably takes over 🤔🤣
*Without spoiling anything I think the precedent it set was making people realize that if their own personal relationships can backfire that way unless you're under a certain age it's already too late to do anything about the evidence unless you're really willing to make an ultimate sacrifice if you know what I mean. Hint hint wink wink try not to spoil anything for anyone who doesn't know the story already

I think you're right regarding the risk of publishing manifestos like that Simon. Seemingly being, wouldn't this create a precedent of getting attention and a voice brought to crazy rantings or basically leading to a threat like "Publish my works or I'll do ..."

Not a fan of stories being broken up into multiple parts, but I also get that this is a longer one.
I actually never realized the Unabomber had so many victims. For some reason I remember it only being a couple and the difficulties with trying to work out his unhinged motives. It's interesting seeing the timeline laid out more thoroughly.
I do hate how his intellect is played up so heavily. I feel people who turn to violence against the innocent to force the changes they want to see are showing in the most abhorrent way possible their own inability to convey the message they seem so convinced is a solution. If you think sending bombs to random teachers is a better way to get academia's attention than, I don't know, just righting a fucking essay on a subject, you're an idiot.

I really agree with you on this. It's actually really bizarre to me that people play up his intellect so much. Let's be clear, Ted Kaczynski is not a sociologist, a psychologist, or a historian. Sure, I won't disagree that he is an intelligent person in some capacity, but like... Have you ever tried to read his manifesto? Not listen to it in audio form, actually sit down and read it and digest it paragraph by paragraph. I got halfway through it and was so sick of his rambling, armchair psychology that I just had to stop. It honestly comes across as the ranting of a narcissistic, psychopathic neonazi with a god complex.
And yes, I said neonazi. I don't care that Ted Kaczynski claims that he doesn't like nazis. There's a reason that nazis like him. You can't say shit like "Leftists are antagonistic to genetic explanations of human abilities or behavior because such explanations tend to make some persons appear superior or inferior to others" and "Feminists are desperately anxious to prove that women are as strong and as capable as men. Clearly they are nagged by a fear that women may NOT be as strong and as capable as men" and not expect to attract nazis. But I guess most people just conveniently miss those parts of the third section.
I'm sorry if that came across as a bit hostile. I just stopped reading his manifesto about 30 minutes ago and I'm a bit exasperated after spending hours reading the armchair psychology of a wannabe philosopher who's actually just a serial killer.

Except he *was* brilliant in certain ways. There are different types of intelligence. His didn't include interacting with human beings. Speaking as someone on the autism spectrum, I spent a *lot* of my life violently frustrated at my own inability to communicate effectively with others. Never to the point of building a bomb or anything, but I did get into fights. I've gotten better, thanks in large part to having a supportive family with a strong emphasis on communication. Not everyone has that background or the willingness to work on their own failings.

Is it just me, or does a college professor named Diogenes seem sort of like a character in a fictional novel? I guess, with a name like that, you pretty much have to end up being a professor, or something equivalent. Lol.

His methods were wrong. Bombings and murder are never going to be an effective way to achieve a goal. But the things Theodore Kaczynski wrote are pretty spot on in a lot of ways.

@@rich9684 Exactly! I see pepole saying how spot on he is, but even if some of his points are not completely wrong, he seemed to make the mistake of not providing any viable solutions, just said that we should go backwards... That really makes him lose 'genius points' and credibility in my eyes.
