Using nickel in items that touch people should be illegal. In Europe it is restricted. Back in the 1970's I used eyeshadow as a teenager. My eyelids would swell, turn red, develop blisters and itch like crazy. I had my ears pierced and almost all my earrings would cause infection. Then other jewelry would break my skin out. Metal buttons, my tweezers, straight pins etc. anything that touched my skin would cause rashes. They even use nickel in braces and other medical devices that are put in your body.

We are sorry to hear you have been having these health problems. Below is additional information to help you better understand nickel allergy and any roles it may or may not have in your symptoms. It would be best to consult a dermatologist for confirmation of your nickel allergy and necessary treatment.
It is not necessary to avoid all nickel-containing items since nickel release (to be available for skin absorption and immune reaction), not nickel content of the material, is the key factor that determines if there is a risk of nickel allergic reactions. In addition, enough of the nickel must be released (above a threshold) to have a nickel allergic reaction. In order to have enough nickel released, direct skin contact for a long time is needed (i.e. not brief contact).
Accordingly, the EU regulation restricts the amount of nickel that can be released from nickel-containing objects if they are intended to be in direct and prolonged contact with the skin (e.g. in earrings, piercings, other jewelry or clothes fasteners), measured using standardized test. Since the introduction of this restriction, the prevalence of nickel allergy in the European population has decreased significantly.
More information can be found here : nickelinstitute.org/policy/nickel-and-product-policy/nickel-and-nickel-allergic-contact-dermatitis
Alloys such as many stainless steels contain nickel (up to 28%) but do not release sufficient amounts of nickel ions to cause someone to become allergic to nickel or have a nickel allergic reaction. This means that nickel-containing materials can be used to the great benefit of society in general.
For example, ‘surgical stainless steel’ contains nickel and is safely used for a wide range of medical instruments (e.g. surgical tools and tables) and devices (e.g. stents and implants). In dentistry, stainless steel is used due to its properties of durability and corrosion resistance and nickel-titanium alloy has special memory properties important in orthodontics.
Long-term clinical experience with stainless steel implants confirms that it has acceptable biocompatibility with the human body. Because of this, stainless steel is one of several control materials against which new materials are compared for bio-compatibility.
That said, a very small part of the population is hypersensitive to nickel. Unfortunately, these individuals react to lower concentrations of nickel on the skin than most nickel-sensitive individuals and potentially by oral exposure. Regulation and prevention of nickel sensitization and nickel ACD of the general population is not intended to protect hypersensitive individuals who unfortunately have to take additional precautions. In this case, individualized counselling and tailored advice from dermatologists is needed.

For me it was lifethreathening. In 9 months I was slowly dying until my mom finally found out you can be allergic to metals. We let the dentist remove my dental braces and in a week i recovered from not being able to walk and sleeping all day to being able to walk and sleep less. If i haddent had my mom and people sharing it on the internet i would be dead, because all the doctors we visited didn't know what i had and eventually when we told them didn't believe it. I hope i can help anyone with this story. If anyone has tips on what to eat i would be happy to hear them.

Thank you for sharing your experience. We understand the distress that you must have suffered and we wish you a speedy and full recovery.
To clarify the messaging in the video, nickel allergy is a Type 4 "delayed reaction allergy". This means that unlike some other allergens (e.g. type 1), nickel cannot trigger life-threatening anaphylactic shock.
While a fraction of the general population is allergic to nickel, a very small sub-fraction of the nickel allergic population is hypersensitive to nickel, reacting to much lower amounts than most of the nickel-sensitive people. Such hypersensitive people may also potentially react to oral exposure to nickel. You may be one of them.
Prevention in these cases is important and has to be done on a case-by-case basis in consultation with a doctor familiar with nickel allergy in hypersensitive people.
Since some foods naturally contain higher nickel levels (e.g., some nuts, chocolate and beans), a low nickel diet may be prescribed by this doctor.

Research foods with high nickel content. Avoid all nuts, legumes, dark green leafy vegetable, chocolate, WHOLE grains (white bread/white rice is okay as long as there is NO SOY), no shellfish, no raspberries. There are a lot of other foods that are fine. Most meats, dairy, root veggies, fruit (NOT DRIED), sourdough (no soy), is fine. It SUCKS!

I have eczema and nickel allergy. I already had really bad eczema as a kid but now that Im older I've found out more about it. Last year I had one of the worst rashes of my life after I fell asleep with my phone in my bed. Rashes all over my chest and under my armpits. That's when it go bad to where I could not move my arm because it would hurt so bad from the cuts and my skin being dry because I keptt scratching it. I went to a doctor and they told me I have nickel allergy and gave me some ointment to help it . I took a like warm shower and put it on and I felt better the next day. Still itchy but better. After a week or two it was completely gone. But then I noticed that I started sweating in my armpits more than usual. I just found out that some foods have nickel so that why I get light headed when eating certain things.

Hi. This is a great video for contact dermatitis but would you please do a video on foods to avoid as well. I see many people don't understand there are certain foods that should be avoided if there is a hypersensitivity in the gut. I have experienced a lot of gut pain and infection due to irritation caused by food sensitivity caused by nickel in foods. Thank you for your work and for informing people of what can cause trouble if they have a nickel allergy.

There are a lot of nickel free versions of jewelry you can find and also avoid earrings that have exposed solder because the solder usually contains nickel, even if the jewelry metal does not.

I had tests done once. The doctor said it was the worst reaction he had ever seen. I think the nickel allergy has something to do with the eczema, itchy water blisters, I've had since I was young. Now I've learned it's in food. Maybe that is what's keeping it going.

Thank you for your comment and your patience.
Research has been done regarding potential toxicity associated with nickel in dental materials. Evidence of reactions are for individuals already sensitized to nickel, not for becoming sensitive (allergic) to nickel from nickel-containing dental materials. The number of reported cases is quite low compared to the very large number of nickel-allergic people with nickel-containing dental appliances. Nevertheless, the awareness of possible reactions is addressed by many dentist and alternative materials are used if someone is nickel-allergic. A review was commissioned by NiPERA and published in 2006 on this topic.
The safety of nickel containing dental alloys: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16405986/
Setcos JC, Babaei-Mahani A, Silvio LD, Mjör IA, Wilson NH.Dent Mater. 2006 Dec;22(12):1163-8.
In addition, an article on nickel release as a measure of potential toxicity was also published.
Bhaskar V, Subba Reddy VV. Biodegradation of nickel and chromium from space maintainers: An in vitro study. J Indian Soc Pedod Prev Dent. 2010;28:6-12.
      - PubMed: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20215665/
      - Google Scholar: journals.lww.com/jped/fulltext/2010/28010/biodegradation_of_nickel_and_chromium_from_space.3.aspx
A more detailed review of all of the literature is not possible, but the conclusions of the studies found are consistent with nickel not causing nickel allergy in non-nickel-allergic individuals and causing nickel allergic reactions in only a small portion of already nickel-sensitized individuals (for which the risk is usually managed).
