The trick only works as far as the spider doesn't eat the mushrooms in the trap. A lot of arcade owners hated this centipede trap and banned players from using it.
Went back to arcade today and practiced, doing better than before. The fact that they allow me to continue by adding quarters at the end of each game, helped me set up the trap. The tricky part is the single heads getting trapped first, and that makes new heads continue to come out of the sides of the screen. Another issue is the spider gets fast and knocks out the trap, which frees the centipede. I gotta buy one of these arcade games and put it in my living room.
original Atari centipede machines did not have a continue option--so you had to rightfully earn your score--I got my team play centipede and it works great. a nice 25" crt monitor inside a steel candy cab. I got a 977,777 score on it with the trap and a 443,000 playing regular way.

This is sooooo awesome!! I literally have been looking for a video exactly like this for a long time and you may be the only one who posted this strategy on video. Thank you so much for doing this and showing how to recover after getting killed and still being able to trap the centipede again.
Btw, is there a way to prevent the single head centipedes from coming out of the sides, when the long centipede is trapped? I noticed that sometimes they wouldn't come out and sometimes they would, while the centipede was trapped.
the 1,3,5 mushrooms are the key...if one gets on top of 5th (6)its a problem . try to clear anything around the trap other than 1,2,3,4,5(1 being lowest)
if you can set the trap without ever killing the (whole) centipede, no fleas will fall, and you can get the whole centipede in all at once, if it comes the right direction from the top. in other words stay on level 1 or play again until the centipede is whole again. if no fleas are falling you can clear mushrooms between spiders. I have scored 999999 this way (spider only) but it takes 90 minutes or more and is quite boring. if the machine has high score save its worthwhile.if the 3rd highest score is not way higher than 4th or the high score is 16k don't bother.also I have set the trap on both sides at the same time, but then you have to worry about both sides so one side is better
So the Mame version, is the same as the Factory setting arcade machine? I will have to break out the mother board, and get the cabinet up and running again. I remember mame having a few different version roms. on a side note" I bet billy Mitchell wish he did not use old mame lol "
There's nothing wrong with Mame. The main reason it can't be used for a high score record is because it lets you have save states. For the rest of us though, its just as good.
@@OldAussieAds I fixed the high score File a long time ago. I haven't played Mame in a while although. Been going to Auctions, and personal selling's for the large up right machines. " mostly pinball = kind of my fav :). about 1year ago I enlarged my Boat Garage, and added the necessary Voltage for a personal Arcade. It's Getting hard to get them, due to food/bar businesses acquiring them for 10$ cover charges. You still playing some Mame Games?
@@lisamaitland157 Absolutely. I'm playing them fairly regularly. Wonderboy is my main game but I'm also playing Centipede (with trackball), Robotron (dual joysticks), Galaga, Ghosts N' Goblins and Wizard of Wor (amongst others). Been using Mame since the late 90s.
I almost got the trap a few times. Came close but they keep multiplying and coming out too fast. Is there a reason you try not to split up the centipede? I see u avoid shooting it. Also, on the 2nd screen does the scorpion ever come out? I seen a guy build a trap on higher boards and just shot scorpions and spiders all day.
you can do it but in order for fleas not to fall it has to be when the centipede is full sized and not separated (i think full is 12 pieces) perhaps you can pause and count them so i assume level 1-12- 24 etc
@@ORIGINALGAMESONLY yes it is 12 segments. Funny thing, yesterday I was able to build a trap 2x! I believe on the 3rd screen and higher, but the spider got me a few times. I was able to do it because I saw where you set up to shoot and build mushrooms. I was too far outside. Building a trap is a fun challenge!

Oh, I never heard of that. I don't even remember if they had the "continue" option back in the 80s or not, as it has been a long time, hehe.

if you play in mame version 3 is the only good one

I never discovered this method. How come no more singletons centipedes are marching onto the screen?
because the max number is is the trap i think 12 pieces maybe 10
