    which do you think is the best, spot x or Garmin inReach Explorer +

    • @outdooremergencytech
      @outdooremergencytech  3 года назад

      In a short answer...the Garmin inReach Explorer+. The Explorer+ has a maps on the device and it has global, pole to pole coverage. I own both of them and it's an obvious choice for me.

    Thanks for the review. I'm using SpotX for a couple of days and can't make it send a breadcrumb to the shared view. I've tried everything, but it sends just one or two positions for a 4-hour activity. I'm very aware of the demanding necessity of having the antenna in vertical position and I'm trying to improve its position (very hard if you are moving). I've used it like you do, clipped to the backtrap strap. Could you please inform if you can actually see a good breadcrumb in the shared view? Thanks.

      Give me a few days to take the SPOT X out for another field test. I'll check it out thoroughly, reply back with what I find and also post the video here. I'll comment back when I finish that field test.

      @@outdooremergencytech thank you so much for taking the trouble. I'm still doing tests before I complain to the support. Today I put it in my car’s dashboard while I did some errands through the city. I got GPS contact ok messages, so this shouldn’t be a problem, even if the antenna was pointed to the car’s roof (I wanted to see if it could communicate to the satellites trough the large front window even if the antenna wasn't pointed directly to the sky). Not a single position was sent in hours of dislocation. I will try to fix it in the dashboard in some place the antenna can be pointed directly to the sky and still be in vertical position but this is hard. Well, thanks again, no hurry, take your time. Best.

      Alvaro, I was just talking with SPOT customer service and they mentioned making sure you have the firmware updated. Check you tracking interval. You can set it anywhere from 2.5 minutes up to 24 hours. Also, make sure you select the tracking button on your SPOT satellite messenger. Next, you can check you map page and the settings there. Make sure your device is listed. Other than that, I would recommend calling customer service. I will still be going out on Saturday to test my SPOT again. I will let you know what I find out.

      @@outdooremergencytech Hi Rick. Thanks again for taking the time. I've had all these points covered already. I'm still making tests before I start complaining to support, but please be sure that I covered the entire manual and fussed with all settings just to be sure that the problem was not on my part. Thanks for letting me know about your experience. Best.

    I did not find the navigation to be a problem with this unit. It does mark way points accurately. Distances to a way point are indicated and updated as you travel. If you have to navigate around obstacles it will redirect you to your way point even if you pass it or come at a completely different angle. The unit does need to held horizontal to have the compass arrow accurately point to the way point. Tilting the device will move the arrow 20 or more degrees off. It does not have a map of the trails but it will eventually get you to your way point or vehicle. If maps are essential you will need to have them on your phone on apps or buy a different device

      The SPOT devices are great devices and should be considered when starting your research. My personal opinion, after testing all of these devices, is that the Garmin inReach Mini and Explorer are the best and easiest to use. I am not here to argue with anyone but give my personal experience after testing each of these in the field.

    Messages work great, blutooth app not so much. They need atak integration in my opinion. I bought it for messaging so works for my needs. Also allows to send to an email address so added bouns.

    Does this have the capability to message from one spot x to another spot x

    • @outdooremergencytech
      @outdooremergencytech  3 года назад

      Yes, but messaging to a Garmin is a problem, unless the message is initiated from a Garmin device.

    Most apps for hiking with "GPS assisted navigation" have the possibility to download maps on the phone (typically the parts of territory you are interested in). When you have downloaded your maps to your phone, you have them always available, even where there is no cell service, and you can use your phone as a GPS navigator with map capabilities. Personally I prefer to use a dedicated device for GPS navigation rather than a smartphone (typically the screen of the smartphone is stupidly reflective, and I need the battery of my phone for other matters, and beside a small GPS navigator is just more practical and robust IMO). A Spot X I would use as a communicator, and as a GPS navigator only as a backup.

      I was under the mistaken assumption that I could use my phone to see a map when using the SPOT X Bluetooth in the field, but after talking with customer service, I found that is not the case. Maps are not available in the field with SPOT X.

      @@outdooremergencytech You could set a tracking map on the web for everybody - or only you - to see. In the field, if you have phone data signal, you can load the page with a browser and see your location (the last "Ok message" or the last tracking point) on a map. This is obviously consuming batteries, and requires a phone connection, and requires the position to be sent to the server, and it's not the same as having the map directly on the Spot X, but it might be useful to you.

    • @outdooremergencytech
      @outdooremergencytech  2 года назад

      You are correct, but I don't like having to take those extra steps, plus my primary satellite messenger is the Garmin inReach Mini 2 which allows me to see my route on the device itself and then see topo maps on my phone when synced. The SPOT X is a great satellite communicator but I don't use it other than to review or compare it because it doesn't have maps. Thanks for the advice.

    You have to look at it as a last minute device and/or text someone just letting them know you are here(wherever). So just in case they know where you were at the time of the message. You never know what nature will throw your way... You might not get a chance to press that SOS button. Also if you use that device all the time and have it on all the time will outdoors... well what are you going to do when your battery is low or dead and you need it???.... It is better to keep that always on you attached to your body or clothing you are wearing. You never know what nature will throw you. You might have to throw your backpack at something or quickly take it off to save your life. It's one thing to have a great device it another thing to be smart with it. A cellphone keep on you and a handheld GPS keep on your backpack. To be smart have two different devices and have this device on you and us it for the reasons I said. Not thinking about different scenarios could bite you in your butt some day.

      You are absolutely correct. A satellite messenger is only one part of the equipment you should have but it doesn't mean everything will turn out well. Thanks for the comment.

    Don't carry your sat comms like that, swings around and bangs into shit when you put your pack down. Put it in a covered case attached to your shoulder strap if you have to have it there

    • @outdooremergencytech
      @outdooremergencytech  3 года назад

      I'm not sure what you're referring to. I have it clipped in and the body of the SPOT X strapped to my backpack strap, so it won't swing around. My point with the SPOT X is to let everyone know you need to strap it down as it is a large device that will give you a headache unless you secure it.

    would not touch it with a barge pole, I have had both the spot X and the others as well as bar in for several adventure trips.
    Spot don't make any secrets about coverage but let's just say when I needed help the only one that worked for me was the Garmin, it's not worth saving a few bucks get the best which this is not.
    As for support omg the people at spot and the GPS service are horrible.
    Say no more.
