The unified municipality of Budapest was formed in 1873 by merging the previously independent cities of Buda (German: Ofen), Óbuda (Old Buda), both west of the Danube, and Pest east of the Danube.
The name Budapest itself did not appear before; the common usage was Pest-Buda. The Danube Riverbank, the Castle District, and Andrássy Avenue are now part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

The origins of both Buda and Pest are a bit fuzzy, but here's what we know:
Buda: There are a few theories about the origin of "Buda." Some say it comes from the name of Attila the Hun's brother, while others believe it might be related to a Slavic word for "water."
Pest: This one might be linked to the Slavic word "pest" meaning "cave" or "rock cavity." Another theory suggests it referred to Gellért Hill on the Buda side, which was originally called Pest Hill.
In 1873, Buda, Óbuda (Old Buda), and Pest officially merged into one city and were given the new name Budapest.
The choice of Budapest over other options like "Pest-Buda" was to avoid confusion on maps, since Buda sits west of the Danube River and Pest sits east.
