  • This workshop is not about drawing Sandhill Cranes. It is about how your ability to draw anything improves when you understand what you see and train your eye to capture critical negative shapes, gestures, and angles. We will start with a detailed look “under the hood” of the Sandhill Crane so we all have a rich understanding of the anatomy and structure. Then we will learn how to make fast gesture lines from moving birds and how to fill these out to completed sketches. We will also explore how to escape from your understanding of what you “should see” to accept what you do see and get that down on paper. This approach is not just a technique for drawing cranes, it applies broadly to any subject you may wish to draw.
As part of the lesson, you will be drawing cranes from videos. You will find links to the original videos here:

Prefect timing for these videos specially in this covid lock down as a vet student helps with learning anatomy.

Just saw this today-9/28/18. Thank you, this was the ultimate painting instruction; best I have ever had. I am 72, decided to pick up my paints after a 25 year hiatus; I live on Tampa Bay where there is a wealth of Sandhill Cranes. I usually see two together or two with one or two young ones--they mate for life-they're so majestic just by their presence. I have begun painting in oils and acrylics; but I like oils better because I have to leave them for a while so I won't have a diluted mess and it makes me contemplate what to do next. I will now spend hours and hours watching your demonstrations. Wish I had had this 30 years ago; nevertheless I have time to learn slowly with understanding. You are so gracious to share your knowledge. BYW you are more handsome than Matt Damon.

Thank you so much for this class. I learned a lot and I am so proud of myself right now because I was able to draw 11 crains during the class and they look really nice. It is my first sketch I never draw anything before. So thank you again you are an amazing teacher.

A truly gifted teacher! I've been learning so much from you, and from your book, over the last few years. Your way of simplifying, and of explaining the logic behind things, no matter the subject, is invaluable and greatly appreciated. Thank you so much, John!
