Thanks for your clear, thorough explanation of using models for multiplying decimals. My granddaughter came home with this type of problems with very little explanation and was so frustrated she cried for hours. Your explanation will definitely come in handy so that I can in turn reduce the stress my little grand daughter is experiencing. School, learning should be a joy not a added stress, especially for little children.

NIce idea for homework - suggestion from one teacher to another - I would phrase it as two tenths of a groups with four tenths of a group in each group. I hate it when people explain multiplication as repeated addition, because it does not work when we get to decimals.

Interesting approach, but only works for decimals that are multiples of 0.1. it cant do 0.2 * 0.05 for example.
