To keep a P38 or P51 can opener closed when not in use, insert a small safety pin into the hinge. Remove the safety pin when you need to use the can opener. The safety pin is also useful as another tool with your keychain EDC.
I have carried one on my keychain in my pocket for 20 years with no problem. I just placed it between my keys rather than on either end and have never once had a problem. I end up using my P-38 around 3-4 times a year. This doesn't sound like much but it's a life saver on each of those occasions.
a better solution is to put a ranger band over the P-51, you just have to find the right sized tire inner tube that fits. The ranger band prevent the little cutting blade from flapping about and you can use the ranger band as a flame extender (it burns for a long while).
i have just learned how to use one of these. people told me just get a regular can opener it is easier. but i found out it is just the same to me has using a regular can.
I place my P-38 and P-51 on a key chain ring , cutters facing each other closed . I then cinch tight a small nylon tie tightly securing them together . 12/22
i ordered some shelby "stainless steel" p51 /s a few years ago and they rusted PDQ,, Just ordered 4 more "stainless steel" ones off Amazon, listed as "stainless steel" shelby, made in USA,,,, Hopefully this batch is actually "stainless steel"......
I've carried mine for over 25 years I've never had that issue I see that the whole that your key chain goes through is on the opposite end that might be why
A little long winded but very good trick. Thanks for sharing. The opener is steel, that is why the magnet works. Ignore the asses that correct the opener you used. They have no life.
What you have there is a P-51. A P-38 has the hole in the corner opposite the blade hinge. Also, the P-38 has only one linear groove rather than two on the P-51. Both are good openers and get the job done. Never had a problem with a P-38 coming open or poking holes most likely because of the hole placement.
@@WrethaOffGrid I always have a Swiss army knife with a can opener in my pocket. I don't remember any time using that can opener. I mean of course I used it, but that was in woods and etc.
@@sg3071 I have used mine at home when I couldn't find my can opener, I have used it at church when their can opener couldn't be located or broke, I have used it a time or two out in the field when cooking outdoors... I consider it in the same category as my tire changing tools in my truck, I don't need it very often, but I'm very glad to have it when I do need it. Of course when a regular can opener is available to use, those are preferable, but on occasion I do pull out my trusty little pocket can opener and use it anyhow, just because... 😁
Very cool, I on the other hand have caught mine on things and have torn a hole in one pair of jeans, I was very happy to discover those tiny magnets in earbuds, they work perfectly for this.
@@WrethaOffGrid i can see why it's nice to have those, though it's odd I don't have any issues. I'll pop the tops off cans in the middle of class just because I know the class pretty well and don't need to pay attention. Haha kinda fun to use in school

I used tape before, 2 problems with it, 1 it leaves a residue that needs to be cleaned off before use, 2 you have to find more tape after you remove it to use.

Grant Marshall These things are cheap and very useful.
I have 2 p38 and have had them for over 20 years still the best canopeners ever made
I agree, unlike the more expensive "wheeled" ones, they never break! 👍

Great video, and great idea with the ear bud magnet. Thanks for posting!

I use a green twist tie to keep mine closed, the dead earbuds is a great idea

This was a great tip!!!
On P38's (Which this is not) I just slip a small piece of latex surgical tubing over the blade. Slide it off when you need to open a can with it.
Wow, that's a great idea! 👍
Great tip! I'll be looking for a small magnet like this.
I've carried mine for over 25 years I've never had that issue I see that the whole that your key chain goes through is on the opposite end that might be why
Wow, love it! I was uncircumcised before I started carrying a P-38, lol, jk.
Awesome, thanks for the knowledge!

I've never had an occasion to use a can opener outside of my kitchen or campsite.
This is an p51
That it a p51 and the p38 is the easier one to use

The linear groove acts as a sheet metal stiffener . 12/22
very nice.! ( your a gem.)
I would always use electrical tape. This is better. 👍
Duct tape for me!
I know it’s a couple of years late but why don’t you super glue the magnet on.
LOL because it's a magnet and it sticks to the metal just fine, I also want to be able to remove the magnet to clean it...
How often do you use it while not away from home?
Actually 2 or 3 times a year, sometimes more, almost never less.

@@WrethaOffGrid good :-)
Brilliant! Though that is the P-51, not the P-38
why not simply squeeze the hinge a bit so it is harder to unfold? no reason to make simple things complicated...
It's not complicated, it's a magnet and it's worked for me for years. 😁
I carry a p38 daily, NEVER ran into an issue with it catching on anything or stabbing myself or anything

Why not just use a small piece of sellotape?
Neil Farrow please watch the video, I explain all about that :)

@@WrethaOffGrid Sorry for late reply, yeah I've had good luck with electric tape. Leaves no residue like other adhesives
