The Armada Unicron toy was far ahead of its time! Not only was it the first transforming Unicron toy put out at retail, but the figure does something that very few Transformer figures have the honour of doing today, and that is it fit into any Transformers collection even in today's world! When they remoulded and reprinted Armada Unicron into G1 Unicron back 2010-2016, it was every G1 fan's dream come true! Before the Haslab, the G1 retool was the perfect Unicron and in some eyes is still the best Unicron toy ever put out. I dare say the Armada Unicron toy might be worthy of the hall of fame of top 10 best Transformers toys of all time.

MP01 Prime is a true classic. I think one aspect people tend to overlook about it is that it scaled up fairly nicely against the Alternators/Binaltech figures. When I collected Alternators back in the day, I was pleased to grab a second hand one to go with my other Autobots. Good times.

After Knight Optimus (AOE/TLK), I think we all owe Energon Optimus Prime an apology. He’s at least owning his kibble rather than hiding all of it because the designers wanted him to be a cool robot first and a Transformer second.

I've always liked Energon Optimus because of the drones. It was back to the Scramble City style where each drone could be any limb and then contribute something different depending on the configuration. The trailer could have been more than just a garage for the drones, but as this team was supposed to be mining Energon more than combat it does make sense, and the drones really didn't get the best showing.
I wish I had gotten Inferno, but I couldn't find it when it was time to get it. He looks really good.

I forgot about Unicron! So many Transformers. Unicron won toy of the year in 2003. Energon Inferno and Starscream are great figures. I got Starscream in 2004 (my 2nd Energon figure). I got a 2nd Inferno last year in better quality than my first, only thing missing was the Laucher section of the weapon and missile. Ive always liked Energon Prime, got him for my 10th birthday (very biased). I do agree with the common consensus, but long-term childhood toys tend to have that effect.

I started collecting about a month or 2 before Cartoon Network started airing Cybertron/Galaxy Force. I found a (Technically Market 6) Universe Energon Arcee. There was never an Arcee figure when I was a kid, didn't even know it was a thing, so I picked it up at ye ole Family Dollar for $5. A couple weeks later I was at this place you may or may not remember called K-Mart, and they had the Alternators Shockwave ... I mean Shockblast and the Corvette Ravage on clearance. They also had the super elusive Windcharger, but I was a noob so I didn't know. Man If I could go back I'd trade those 2 for that 1 in a heartbeat. It's still one of the few Alternator molds I don't have, and the only early mold. Once the line started dying down, the last wave never came to my area so I never got to even see the Rumble, Ravage Jaguar, Mirage/Hotrod, or the Prime Chevy Truck.
Anyway, the point of me commenting was to say that I didn't realize how many of the Cybertron figures were originally Armada toys.
I have that Energon Starscream (Another K-Mart clearance item) and it's held up over the years. I don't play with it much but it's been moved a few times and none of the trans-plastic is getting week or gummy. (There was a lot of clearance buys when I was first starting. It was kind of my way of easing into becoming an adult collector. I have almost 550 products now, as counted by shmax dot com.
I have the 1st US version of MP01. I found it, on clearance, at a Wal-Mart. I want to say it was like $35 but someone bought it for me with some other stuff so I don't remember what the price ended up being. I've played with it a little bit and it's gotten fairly loose over the years. I sits in truck mode now as I have the US MP-10. I was soooo lucky to land a grail after only collecting for a few months. That was kind of the one that made it official. I was officially an adult collector at that point.
I actually just got my first official Japanese Takara/Tomy MP figure last week and opened it last night. MP-47 Hound. It was a gift so IDK what was paid for it, I just know that I'm not willing to spend that much. (Sadly I remember when the car bot size was going for $80-$90 and I thought that was too high. Man do I regret not getting some of them back then.) Supposedly this is one of the "not so good" masterpiece figures, but I have to say, I know why they are expensive, but I'm not sure if they are quite worth the price, but there is some there there. I feel about 75% of what they cost now would be fair, now that I've handled one. I have all of the US/TRU MP molds except for Prowl and, granted there has been quite a bit of time between then and a few years ago when MP-47 came out, but here's just a difference you can feel. IDK if it's the plastic or the paint, but the US ones still feel as plastic as the main line toys. My MP-47 just has this finish and feel that is best described as the difference between a toy and a collectible. Still not worth $200+. But, close, and I hate admitting that.
Great video TJ. I've been enjoying the Best of by year series. looking forward to more as you're about to get into when I started collecting.

My top 10 list for 2003. The end of Armada and the beginning of Energon.
    10. Wheeljack: I'm putting him low for two reasons... he's really not a Wheeljack and his arms have some oddly limited posibility for no real reason. Like he has a wrist swivel but only on one hand and there's no reason for his arms to be molded differently to not allow the same level of movement on both arms.
    9. Hoist: Now we have a real reason for the arms to be different. And I like this guy despite how simple he is. He shares the same gimmick with Cyclonus but can't actually used it which ironically means his Mini-con partner works better with a different character than the one he actually comes packed with.
    8. Starscream: This is Energon Starscream which is only this low because it's a rather simple figure compared to some of the others on this list.
    7. Battle Ravage: He reminds me of BW Ravage having an actual robot mode so I'm showing some BW bias here.
    6. Skyblast: Funny enough Energon has both Skyfire and Jetfire as two seperate characters and Jetfire I didn't include because he turns into pants again and because I don't think Skyblast gets enough credit for just how good of a Skyfire homage he is.
    5. Inferno: I think one of the best Energon Deluxe figures they ever made.
    4. Tidal Wave: Yep I'm talking about it again. This is a great figure all on his own, add the fact that he's also a combiner and there's a lot of play value in this guy. Lack of arculation be damned it's still cool!
    3. Optimus Prime: Talking about the Energon version and I know he's fat and kind of looks like a Power Rangers Megazord but you have to admit there's a lot of play value when his drones can combine with him scramble city style and it just gets better when you add Omega Supreme and Wing Saber. Granted again you can complain the end result of combining with Omega Supereme is not great, I do it too, but despite how dumb it might look it's another thing you can do with the figure.
    2. Overload: I'm putting above Energon Optimus Prime because by this point you would have already had Armada Optimus and Jetfire so you can do more with him right off the bat. I'm technically cheating with Energon because Omega Supreme and Wing Saber haven't been released yet. Overload on his own I'll admit is a brick but he's a nice looking brick. He's also technically a headmaster because Overload does not work without Rollout in robot mode. But the Mini-con is actually the best Mini-con in the entire toy line have his own robot mode, vehicle mode, head master mode, and target master mode as well as being the BIGGEST Mini-con because of everything he has to be able to do. I love this figure.
    1. Unicron: There's no way number 1 wouldn't have been Unicron.
MP-01 was a 20th anniversary release and math tells me 1984 + 20 = 2004 so unless it wasn't marketed that way in Japan I'm fairly certain you're a year too early on that figure.

Hoist reality is quite great. Though Longrack is my favorite version of the mold.
The Omnicons and Terror ones were overall great, though I think Skyblast is the best of them
Agree that the Autobot deluxes struggled a bit
I honestly really love Energon Prime, though I get his weaknesses.
Starscream is an example of how the Decepticons really shined in Energon.
I love, love, love the Scorponok mold (and prefer US colors), especially the Botcon G1 version.
Tidal Wave is one of the best toys of all time. And I’m sorry, the US color scheme is better, and the energon colors even better than that.
I almost feel like it’s unfair to bring in MP against mainline toys. They’re almost a whole other category.
Hope to see Omega Supreme and Sharkticon on next year’s list!

Energon as a toyline is objectively good and reflects the lessons learned from Armada by the Archer team. Optimus had a more articulated base form (and his super form would make a great pretool for a Covenant of Primus-style Nexus Prime; hint hint Hasbro), the gimmicks were fun across both factions (even if the Autobots’ execution of their combination feature was rough), and there was a real ecosystem across all figures thanks to the Energon stars and weaponry (executed infinitely better than Legacy’s Energon weapons). It’s flawed, yes, but it’s flawed in the same way Combiner Wars is- you’re able to look past a lot of them because you’re having so much fun with them.
Out of all these guys, I want Starscream (he’s got Hooligan retool written all over him), Scorponok (especially if we get a BotCon 2014-style faux-G1 retool out of him), Optimus (so his design can be redeemed), and Megatron (he deserves better than a puny Core Class release) to get Generations updates.

    • Armada Hoist's head is probably exactly why the mold was chosen as Timelines BW Dinobot...yesss.
    • Energon Strongarm?? Mans looks like he should've gotten a repaint as G1 Hound in either the first Universe line or the 2007 Movie line.
    • Air Military Team? One becomes a Shuriken?? Cool, but I'll stick with the teams that make the legendary weapons (Star Saber, Skyboom Shield, Requiem Blaster).
    • ...did they ever do a Grapple repaint of Energon Inferno?? I'm thinking he had a Grapple repaint...
    • Grand Convoy, aka the Optimus Megazord or Fatimus Prime. Definitely didn't expect that on the list. (Given that Fans Hobby did a MP scaled modernized take, maybe it had some popularity after all...)
    • Ehhh. Didn't care about Energon/Superlink Starscream (never heard anything about folks thinkin' he's a retool of anything...)
    • This is one where I'll take the modified version of the mold, the Botcon 2014 Pirate Scorponok, a Headmaster.
    • I still regret never getting Tidal Wave to go with Megatron...except stores couldn't keep Tidal Wave in stock. And I don't have my original Armada Megatron anymore on top of that. 😑😑😑 I should look up Micron Legend Shockwave and Armada Megs.
