  • Negroni evolved into the #1 cocktail in the world, changing a lot in its 160 years of history! Starting with 2 of its predecessors, the Milano-Torino and the Americano - which has even been ordered by James Bond in Casino Royale, we’ll see how important Campari was for the development of the Negroni. We’ll make a stop in 1919 Florence for the birth of the modern Negroni using gin instead of soda, and finally I’ll show you how I like to make my Negronis - going for a tropical Venezuelan gin and changing the equal parts specs most people know and love. If you are a fan of this classic, you won’t want to miss this episode. So pull up a chair and get ready to learn about the Negroni through time! Cheers!

      I do an orange negroni, but I toss all the standard ratios out the window, especially since I'm not a big fan of sweet vermouth, though I miss it if it's not in there at all:
      1 oz. dry gin
      1 oz Solerno blood orange liqueur
      3/4 oz. Campari
      1/4 oz. sweet vermouth
      Spritz of orange tincture
      I am also kind of lazy and don't bother to chill/dilute the cocktail by stirring with ice so I also add a splash of water in the glass when I build it.

    It was the summer of 2009, Zig Zag Cafe just off Pike Place Market in Downtown Seattle. A very hot chic orders us both Negroni. Orange slices garnish the rim of the glass. Sweeter than I prefer, yet complex and herbal. Her pretty brown eyes twinkling in the low light. I haven't ordered it since.

    Thank you. Very good video. I started mixing Negronis for my father and his friends when I was around 13. A Mad Men scene! I remember adding actual orange juice, not just peel. Move forwards 45 years. I love Negroni. Sometimes I still add a few drops of orange juice for nostalgia. Gin has become so sophisticated nowadays, but my opinion is that any reasonable not too junipery gin will work. I keep my high end gins for Martinis and G&Ts.

    🥃a Negroni is not only one of my favorite cocktails, it's what inspired me to make slight variations to what I already like. I have a slew of Negronis I go to, but also whenever I want to experiment, an equal parts cocktail is my first attempt every time. Mixing 2-4 ingredients that way is great to find out what balances with what, and what to increase/decrease to get there.
    I'm sure I've just reinvented the wheel lots of times, but I still discovered those portions organically.

    • @seyurisu
      @seyurisu Год назад

      Funny how you start cocktail ideas with equal parts, and then adapt. I think I should try it too. So far, I have noticed that I go for half or double. There is something obsessive about having a well-proportionned recipe.

    Cheers Kevin! I'm a long time fan of your channel. I especially love that you have these history driven videos about the classics to balance out those mind bending, revolutionary technique heavy and multi-ingredient out of this world concoctions. Those combined with the style of your set and gear and also remarkable editing, really make your videos incredibly pleasant to watch. So thanks to you and the whole Cocktail Time crew 🥃
    In this video you only used Campari as the bitter element, and I understand that completely. Still, what other bitter aperitivos would you recommend trying? I personally love adding some Fernet in my Negronis, sometimes even 50/50 with the Campari (which makes it almost a Hanky Panky)

    • @KevinKos
      @KevinKos  Год назад +2

      Glad you like it! Of course, you can change its bitter part for another amaro or bitter. That's the best part of it when creating and twisting drinks. The idea of splitting campari and fernet is actually really good! Nonino, amaro Montenegro, and Averna are other options too. Cheers!

    I'm not really much of a gin fan, excluding my college days of experimenting with too many Tom Collins, but once I saw the pretty red color and vibrant orange peel of my first enticing Negroni, I had to give it a try. But again, I'm not a gin fan, so I went with the Boulevardier as I'm a big bourbon fan. I started at first with Aperol instead of Campari, because with my budget starting out, Aperol was more affordable, and I would say is a great alternative for those who find Campari too intense. You still get a bittersweet, citrus flavor from Aperol, without the biting bitterness from Campari. But I moved on to Campari and now the Boulevardier, a Negroni variation, is my #1 favorite cocktail. I've also tried it with dark rum and absolutely recommend others try that variation as well.
