Wow! The broad and global perspectives of these two men are far reaching and somewhat comforting. Growing involves mistakes and pain, but it's still growing, and I, for one, want to grow. I have been so fortunate to experience many of the social and political turmoils and beauties of this period of time in history.
Touching on so many issues which seem lost in our current culture & society At least the ideas are alive & well. Thank you David & Zareed, Aspen Institute. Taking the long view rather than the short-term,profit motives. Socical & cultural chasms. Institutions of higher education have eliminated Humanities & other programs, concentrating on Business, the desire for profit .
I live in a wealthy community where $250,000 income would be on the low end. There is definitely two different stratas…the workers and the wealthy class. I find that the wealthy class has no real knowledge of how life is for the working class. It’s very frustrating because they think they are “liberal” and inclusive, when they are not. The policies they support, from membership into a “club” that is beyond the reach of the working class, to the fact that they always vote down or block any attempts to build affordable housing in the area. They worry about the “riff raff” moving in. Their perspective unmediated by a working class perspective can be very destructive.
"Aristocracy is less anxious" - I can concur. For the past 12 years I lived among aristocracy (in Europe) and they are less worried and more engaged, since money is not their problem when they grow up. Their main goal is to help society progress. For real. Many of them have 5, 10, 20 year vision and education is just "something you do to get there". The flip side is the restrictions and traditions which they abide by, though. 😉 The best example I have is this baron, which became a friend. His family owns a beautiful castle, they meet up there for the weekends, have a 17th century interior & personnel to serve them. Meanwhile he's driving around in a mediocre Volvo of 20 years old. He studied to be a doctor. He simply doesn't care. He runs around in the highest echelons of politics, and after his pension he didn't know what to do. He took his bike, travelled through Southern America for 6 months, came back and became a part-time night doctor for the homeless. This is a man that has real influence on medical policies in his country, being a part-time doctor for the homeless. These people really understand money is not to be chased after. Then again; they were born in wealth, so they cán. Without being pedantic, I think Universal Basic Income can help the 90% greatly; once they have a choice to work or not, it becomes wáy easier to be of service for society.
This reminds me of Rory Stewart. I don't think his family was Aristocratic, but certainly British upper class. He went to Eton and Oxford, was born in Hong Kong and his father was a man named "Redvers Buller Stewart" was a merchant based out of Calcutta. You look at his life and it's just one big long string of idealized quests to explore the world and try to be a force for good in society. He WALKED from Istanbul to Nepal, was a British diplomat in Indonesia, became a Deputy Governor of a province in Iraq during the 2003 Invasion, started non-profits in Afghanistan, became a Human Rights Professor, and the director of the Carr Center for Human Rights at Harvard. This is all BEFORE he ran for PM in the UK. Basically his whole life has been so secure that it's enabled him to pursue the selfless betterment of his society all his life.
I'm from a small town in Utah that is predominately Mormon. I grew up in the church and found the community aspects of it very welcoming as a teenager but in my late 20's I left the church and now consider myself and atheist. I moved to the city to get away from the religious dominance of the community. Looking back, I see the church was a safe and comfortable community for the in-group and judgmental system of peer pressure for the out- group. Religion is often intrinsically authoritarian-leaning. The belief in God, saviors, and prophets sets you up to believe that change comes from above in the form of a leader who you can put your faith and trust in. The reality is closer to the old adage that "power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Real Democracy is the opposite. It's power from the people in a system of organization from the bottom up. Change comes from around us and through us, not from above. It's time to use the technology we've built under Representative Democracy to build a Direct Democracy of the people, for the people, and by the people. No one is coming to save us but together we can save ourselves and those around us. We need to build secular equivalents to religion in the form of community centers with local job postings, schools for all ages, kitchens, storehouses, and meeting rooms, emergency aid, and everything else that creates a better quality of life. We can do it collectively by cultivating cultural unity like cultivating a garden. It's time for a revolution away from greed, money, and power towards humanity, acceptance, and community.

As an atheist, I still like the idea of churches as places of community, contemplation, reverence, affirmation of shared values, etc. Why can't we have a secular version of that without all the sectarian dogma and supernatural bullshit?

Brooks keeps touting "family/community and moral order" as the foundation of some stable political order. He has repeated this over and over in other speeches. But he ignores the prerequisite for community and moral order, which is personal security, however it is defined. personal security in 1600 was food and shelter. In 1900 in the USA it was food, shelter and job. In 2020 it is dignified job, affordable health care, etc. As life is modernized, personal expectations (definitions) of security riase. But if social institutions fail to meet the expectations for personal security (thanks to being manipulated by and for the elite), people rebel. This is the source of the rise of popularism: Manipulation of Social/political institutiions to favor the elites at the cost of the rest of the population.
It's amazing that we talk about the problems with the war in Iraq and Afghanistan and end by saying we should have all sent our children there. National service does not have to be Military service and In fact I would say something like the peace corps is far preferable than training all our sons and daughters to kill.

Fareed needs to push mission trips that religious institutions push for youth to grow towards social justice. Also, social justice is a huge part of the theology. It's not fairy tales, like your daughter expressed, it's a way of life we teach our children to partake of in their lives.

That is not true. Most of the great EMPIRES have fallen. There are many great nations that have existed for centuries and are still going strong today. Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland. They have never fallen, they are at the top of the happiness quotient scale every time. What do they do differently? They are humanist, not authoritarian. They don't think in terms of violent retribution, conquering, or punishment. They take care of their people...ALL their people. They happily pay high taxes and those taxes are used to make sure that every single citizen has a dignified, safe, and comfortable existence. It is also worth noting, that the argument from the US has always been that the people in these countries are paying astronomical taxes, and I believed that because the government does make sure every citizen is provided for. As a private contractor, I have to pay 27% of my earnings in taxes here in America. More than 1/4 of the money that I work my tail off to earn, goes to the US government and I still have to buy my own health insurance. I recently looked into a relocation to Sweden. Do you know what the standard tax rate at my income level is in Sweden? ~21%! They are paying LESS in taxes there, and those tax dollars are going to provide healthcare for all, housing, food, and infrastructure. We are getting robbed by our government.

I've been reading the works of both Samuel P. Huntington and Fareed Zakaria. However, I find it challenging to grasp Zakaria's contributions. My difficulty lies in his contradictory rhetoric about individualism and community. He discusses as if an individual within a community is a deficiency that we all need to shed from us, even while he is the compassionate one who acknowledges how painful that shedding is. He rages against the reeducation of the Uighurs but wants to reeducate all into mechanistic utility optimisers leaving their communities behind on an eternal journey of individualist self-actualisation. He discusses being a mechanistic actor in the global corporate market with individualist transhuman identity appendages freely chosen and discarded, while also being an authentic human being. What does it mean to be human, according to him? It appears that he advocates for a single universal norm called "liberal democracy," where individual rights are only valued if they serve the global market of individualist utilities. However, if your rights prioritize freely committing to promote and protect your community, you will be re-educated to only serve yourself within the Enlightenment triad of Epicureanism, with its narcissism, Gnosticism, with its psychopathy and Stoicism, with its Machiavellianism.

I always enjoy listening to Fareed Zakaria. However as a Generation Xer I totally disagree with the idea of national service for the young and frankly I am militant about it. This discussion was lacking because neither Brooks or Zakaria touched on the generational aspect to our current situation. I know that climate change also weighs on some of our vision of an optimistic future. The Medicare prescription drug benefit costs the federal government $120 billion dollars a year. Nobody paid for this, it is dumped on the next generation of taxpayers. Tell me again why mandatory service for young people should be part of the formula for reasonable tuition? Let's start with a meaningful minimum wage and putting the capital tax rate on par with labor. Given the audience, this lecture itself is a form of populism.

I used to think Fareed Zakaria is a great thinker, now when I compare him to Jeffrey Sachs, I no longer can understand if Fareed is truly bright or just decided to go with the flow and trying to achieve acceptance from the Western culture. e.g. "Not since Rome"?, may be look a bit further back in time when Asian and Iranian culture lead the world, and I am sure that Fareed must have know it and decided to pick and choose the facts just to agree with others. Americans don't know about the rest of the world because there is no need to. The average American is MAYBE nearby Mexico or Canada. Beyond those two nations, every American would need to board an expensive flight or a ship to reach any other nation. Most of the world is literally thousands of miles removed.

Brooks keeps touting "family/community and moral order" as the foundation of some stable political order. He has repeated this over and over in other speeches. But he ignores the prerequisite for community and moral order, which is personal security, however it is defined. personal security in 1600 was food and shelter. In 1900 in the USA it was food, shelter and job. In 2020 it is dignified job, affordable health care, etc.
As life is modernized, personal expectations (definitions) of security riase. But if social institutions fail to meet the expectations for personal security (thanks to being manipulated by and for the elite), people rebel. This is the source of the rise of popularism: Manipulation of Social/political institutiions to favor the elites at the cost of the rest of the population.

That is not true. Most of the great EMPIRES have fallen. There are many great nations that have existed for centuries and are still going strong today. Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland. They have never fallen, they are at the top of the happiness quotient scale every time. What do they do differently? They are humanist, not authoritarian. They don't think in terms of violent retribution, conquering, or punishment. They take care of their people...ALL their people. They happily pay high taxes and those taxes are used to make sure that every single citizen has a dignified, safe, and comfortable existence. It is also worth noting, that the argument from the US has always been that the people in these countries are paying astronomical taxes, and I believed that because the government does make sure every citizen is provided for. As a private contractor, I have to pay 27% of my earnings in taxes here in America. More than 1/4 of the money that I work my tail off to earn, goes to the US government and I still have to buy my own health insurance. I recently looked into a relocation to Sweden. Do you know what the standard tax rate at my income level is in Sweden? ~21%! They are paying LESS in taxes there, and those tax dollars are going to provide healthcare for all, housing, food, and infrastructure. We are getting robbed by our government.

I've been reading the works of both Samuel P. Huntington and Fareed Zakaria. However, I find it challenging to grasp Zakaria's contributions. My difficulty lies in his contradictory rhetoric about individualism and community. He discusses as if an individual within a community is a deficiency that we all need to shed from us, even while he is the compassionate one who acknowledges how painful that shedding is. He rages against the reeducation of the Uighurs but wants to reeducate all into mechanistic utility optimisers leaving their communities behind on an eternal journey of individualist self-actualisation. He discusses being a mechanistic actor in the global corporate market with individualist transhuman identity appendages freely chosen and discarded, while also being an authentic human being. What does it mean to be human, according to him? It appears that he advocates for a single universal norm called "liberal democracy," where individual rights are only valued if they serve the global market of individualist utilities. However, if your rights prioritize freely committing to promote and protect your community, you will be re-educated to only serve yourself within the Enlightenment triad of Epicureanism, with its narcissism, Gnosticism, with its psychopathy and Stoicism, with its Machiavellianism.

Maybe it is the income divide, in my circle I don't know anyone who make 250,000. People who make a lot of many tend to live in bubble communities that may feel isolated. I live in a working class neighborhood. See trump and black lives matter in the same street. The more disturbing trend I see in young people is a lack of respect for all religions and beliefs. They are doomed to become the very thing they hate bigots.

Wealth is both a cultural and political reality. Talk about wealth. By the way, wealth requires wisdom in my book. It's more than just money. The Bible says wisdom is the principle thing. Everybody likes wealth, even God. But it takes wisdom to acquire wealth. Someone once said wisdom is love in action. I'm still trying to figure that out. But somehow, our culture has evolved not to cherish wisdom but just knowledge. You know the old adage, "knowledge is power". I always enjoy listening to Fareed Zakaria. However as a Generation Xer I totally disagree with the idea of national service for the young and frankly I am militant about it. This discussion was lacking because neither Brooks or Zakaria touched on the generational aspect to our current situation. I know that climate change also weighs on some of our vision of an optimistic future. The Medicare prescription drug benefit costs the federal government $120 billion dollars a year. Nobody paid for this, it is dumped on the next generation of taxpayers. Tell me again why mandatory service for young people should be part of the formula for reasonable tuition? Let's start with a meaningful minimum wage and putting the capital tax rate on par with labor. Given the audience, this lecture itself is a form of populism.
