I live in a wealthy community where $250,000 income would be on the low end. There is definitely two different stratas…the workers and the wealthy class. I find that the wealthy class has no real knowledge of how life is for the working class. It’s very frustrating because they think they are “liberal” and inclusive, when they are not. The policies they support, from membership into a “club” that is beyond the reach of the working class, to the fact that they always vote down or block any attempts to build affordable housing in the area. They worry about the “riff raff” moving in. Their perspective unmediated by a working class perspective can be very destructive.
"Aristocracy is less anxious" - I can concur. For the past 12 years I lived among aristocracy (in Europe) and they are less worried and more engaged, since money is not their problem when they grow up. Their main goal is to help society progress. For real. Many of them have 5, 10, 20 year vision and education is just "something you do to get there". The flip side is the restrictions and traditions which they abide by, though. 😉 The best example I have is this baron, which became a friend. His family owns a beautiful castle, they meet up there for the weekends, have a 17th century interior & personnel to serve them. Meanwhile he's driving around in a mediocre Volvo of 20 years old. He studied to be a doctor. He simply doesn't care. He runs around in the highest echelons of politics, and after his pension he didn't know what to do. He took his bike, travelled through Southern America for 6 months, came back and became a part-time night doctor for the homeless. This is a man that has real influence on medical policies in his country, being a part-time doctor for the homeless. These people really understand money is not to be chased after. He went to Eton and Oxford, was born in Hong Kong and his father was a man named "Redvers Buller Stewart" was a merchant based out of Calcutta. You look at his life and it's just one big long string of idealized quests to explore the world and try to be a force for good in society. He WALKED from Istanbul to Nepal, was a British diplomat in Indonesia, became a Deputy Governor of a province in Iraq during the 2003 Invasion, started non-profits in Afghanistan, became a Human Rights Professor, and the director of the Carr Center for Human Rights at Harvard. This is all BEFORE he ran for PM in the UK. Basically his whole life has been so secure that it's enabled him to pursue the selfless betterment of his society all his life.

I grew up in the church and found the community aspects of it very welcoming as a teenager but in my late 20's I left the church and now consider myself and atheist. I moved to the city to get away from the religious dominance of the community. Looking back, I see the church was a safe and comfortable community for the in-group and judgmental system of peer pressure for the out- group. Religion is often intrinsically authoritarian-leaning. The belief in God, saviors, and prophets sets you up to believe that change comes from above in the form of a leader who you can put your faith and trust in. It's power from the people in a system of organization from the bottom up. Change comes from around us and through us, not from above. It's time to use the technology we've built under Representative Democracy to build a Direct Democracy of the people, for the people, and by the people. No one is coming to save us but together we can save ourselves and those around us. We need to build secular equivalents to religion in the form of community centers with local job postings, schools for all ages, kitchens, storehouses, and meeting rooms, emergency aid, and everything else that creates a better quality of life. We can do it collectively by cultivating cultural unity like cultivating a garden. It's time for a revolution away from greed, money, and power towards humanity, acceptance, and community.

It's amazing that we talk about the problems with the war in Iraq and Afghanistan and end by saying we should have all sent our children there. National service does not have to be Military service and In fact I would say something like the peace corps is far preferable than training all our sons and daughters to kill.
“We have lost the ability to think long term”. - truer words have never been spoken.and in many ways, the Internet is largely to blame for this damaging development.
One thing that bothers me in life....people who feel because of their riches they are better than we are???? No, no. When I ask myself what is my riches ? It's love!❤😊
Fareed needs to push mission trips that religious institutions push for youth to grow towards social justice. Also, social justice is a huge part of the theology. It's not fairy tales, like your daughter expressed, it's a way of life we teach our children to partake of in their lives.
“ In the end ,more than freedom ,they wanted security . They wanted a comfortable life and they lost it all - security, comfort, and freedom. When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them , when the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again.” ~ Gibbons How come this historian from over 200 years ago knows more about the world today than these two guys?
Not once was liberal oligarchy, bourgeois democracy, extreme individualism, colonial imperialism, financial colonialism, Zionism, global hegemony, rentier neofeudalism, or the need for violence seriously critiqued. Fareed Zakaria is trying to resurrect a system benefitting only elites. Good luck with that. Western societies, especially the U.S., have become liberal oligarchies where elites hold most of the power, and collective beliefs have eroded. Changes in family structures and education have fostered divisions between the educated elites and the masses. The shift has contributed to strategic failures and conflicts, as seen in the insular nature of U.S. foreign policy decisions, leading to situations like the conflict in Ukraine and the financial and weapons support of crimes against humanity in Palestine. “If we want to anticipate the strategic choices of America, we need therefore with all urgency to abandon the axioms of rationality. The U.S. is not looking for benefits, evaluated against costs. In the village of Washington, in the country of mass shootings, in the time of zero religion, the primary driving force is a need for violence.” -Emmanuel Todd, Defeat of the West
I so agree. In Germany economic liberalism brought about not working trains, broken bridges, rotten schools, enormous wealth for the very few. Terrible poverty for many female pensioners

F Z is right & most immigrants hav the same feeling about America , who make it, 'who are successful' but then there r others who'r , lets say 'let down' America is hard , its not for all including the ones who hav lived here for generations & feel let down , its very hard for them to fathom history , statistics , they look around & blame the system , there is a reason why every great nation goes down , lets hope the history does not repeat itself, for many more centuries to come .
That is not true. Most of the great EMPIRES have fallen. There are many great nations that have existed for centuries and are still going strong today. Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland. They have never fallen, they are at the top of the happiness quotient scale every time. What do they do differently? They are humanist, not authoritarian. They don't think in terms of violent retribution, conquering, or punishment. They take care of their people...ALL their people. They happily pay high taxes and those taxes are used to make sure that every single citizen has a dignified, safe, and comfortable existence. It is also worth noting, that the argument from the US has always been that the people in these countries are paying astronomical taxes, and I believed that because the government does make sure every citizen is provided for. As a private contractor, I have to pay 27% of my earnings in taxes here in America. More than 1/4 of the money that I work my tail off to earn, goes to the US government and I still have to buy my own health insurance. I recently looked into a relocation to Sweden. Do you know what the standard tax rate at my income level is in Sweden? ~21%! They are paying LESS in taxes there, and those tax dollars are going to provide healthcare for all, housing, food, and infrastructure. We are getting robbed by our government.

I've been reading the works of both Samuel P. Huntington and Fareed Zakaria. However, I find it challenging to grasp Zakaria's contributions. My difficulty lies in his contradictory rhetoric about individualism and community. He discusses as if an individual within a community is a deficiency that we all need to shed from us, even while he is the compassionate one who acknowledges how painful that shedding is. He rages against the reeducation of the Uighurs but wants to reeducate all into mechanistic utility optimisers leaving their communities behind on an eternal journey of individualist self-actualisation. He discusses being a mechanistic actor in the global corporate market with individualist transhuman identity appendages freely chosen and discarded, while also being an authentic human being. What does it mean to be human, according to him? It appears that he advocates for a single universal norm called "liberal democracy," where individual rights are only valued if they serve the global market of individualist utilities. However, if your rights prioritize freely committing to promote and protect your community, you will be re-educated to only serve yourself within the Enlightenment triad of Epicureanism, with its narcissism, Gnosticism, with its psychopathy and Stoicism, with its Machiavellianism.
Did nobody tell Fareed before he began publishing his book that the title of it was already taken by a more respected scholar (and one who wasn't afraid to call himself a revolutionary, with all which that entailed)?
We’ve lost a shared common narrative. American culture is now so diffused that we don’t even have shared understanding of democracy. Free speech is not sufficient to keep a country together. We are lost in a soup of cultural diversity and it contributes to mass confusion.
'Bill Gates did it all on his own', except that, thanks to a trust established for him by his mother, a timber heiress, he was worth $1 million on the day of his birth, and he went to an expensive private school that happened to have some early computer equipment not available to most public school students. Similarly, Jeff Bezos got his start largely due to a $250,000 grant from an uncle… and so on. yes, they worked hard, but they also had singular advantages….
Mr. Bezos work at McDonald's when he was young. His mother took him to night classes with her when she was a single parent. He borrowed the money from his parents, there was no grant. The world is full of whiners that coulda, shoulda, woulda. This country had tens of millions of people that had more opportunity than he did.

Maybe it is the income divide, in my circle I don't know anyone who make 250,000. People who make a lot of many tend to live in bubble communities that may feel isolated. Wealth is both a cultural and political reality. Talk about wealth. By the way, wealth requires wisdom in my book. It's more than just money. The Bible says wisdom is the principle thing. Everybody likes wealth, even God. But it takes wisdom to acquire wealth. Someone once said wisdom is love in action. I'm still trying to figure that out. But somehow, our culture has evolved not to cherish wisdom but just knowledge. You know the old adage, "knowledge is power". Maybe we have not evolved but devolved, so we're right back with Adam and Eve. God help us

Coal, oil and gas led to the modern economic miracle. One barrel of oil is equal to 4+ years of manual labor, plus 4000 useful byproducts. The enlightenment and democracies set the stage for innovation. Energy powered it. Money is a claim on future energy resources.

Yes…I just saw Brooks pontificating on how is a moral decline of the “ common people” worldwide. Typical deflection of the elite that don’t want to face the obscene and growing wealth gap…and a denial of the very “ DREAM “ that was dangled by the greedy to keep workers productive and striving. Well…the common people are angry…it’s history repeating…remember, “… it’s the economy , stupid”.

I always enjoy listening to Fareed Zakaria. However as a Generation Xer I totally disagree with the idea of national service for the young and frankly I am militant about it. This discussion was lacking because neither Brooks or Zakaria touched on the generational aspect to our current situation. I know that climate change also weighs on some of our vision of an optimistic future. The Medicare prescription drug benefit costs the federal government $120 billion dollars a year. Nobody paid for this, it is dumped on the next generation of taxpayers. Tell me again why mandatory service for young people should be part of the formula for reasonable tuition? Let's start with a meaningful minimum wage and putting the capital tax rate on par with labor. Given the audience, this lecture itself is a form of populism.

I used to think Fareed Zakaria is a great thinker, now when I compare him to Jeffrey Sachs, I no longer can understand if Fareed is truly bright or just decided to go with the flow and trying to achieve acceptance from the Western culture. e.g. "Not since Rome"?, may be look a bit further back in time when Asian and Iranian culture lead the world, and I am sure that Fareed must have know it and decided to pick and choose the facts just to agree with others. This is the source of the rise of popularism: Manipulation of Social/political institutiions to favor the elites at the cost of the rest of the population.

what a great session. Only in America. . .
It's amazing that we talk about the problems with the war in Iraq and Afghanistan and end by saying we should have all sent our children there. National service does not have to be Military service and In fact I would say something like the peace corps is far preferable than training all our sons and daughters to kill.
This was wonderful! Absolutely two of our country’s best thinkers - two of the world’s best thinkers!
What if you've got no love or riches?
Fareed needs to push mission trips that religious institutions push for youth to grow towards social justice. Also, social justice is a huge part of the theology. It's not fairy tales, like your daughter expressed, it's a way of life we teach our children to partake of in their lives.
"The Edge told me that was bullshit"
Great response.
“ In the end ,more than freedom ,they wanted security . They wanted a comfortable life and they lost it all - security, comfort, and freedom.
When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them , when the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again.”

How come this historian from over 200 years ago knows more about the world today than these two guys?
Loved this, thank you!
A lot of us make under 250k and are educated and are watching this
I love both gentlemen and the messages they have - it’s not only elite that think this way
“Tulips and Football”…..I always sorta kinda just “knew” there had to be some connection betwixed the two. Very interesting!
A really interesting discussion you might enjoy
The problem is the “average” citizen of each nation losses out while the exceptional citizen thrives under the globalized system.
The “Everyman” backlash has long been building. The response to those needs will rule the next generation.
The funny part is that the “average” citizen consistently turn to Fascism
The "everyman" in the US shops at Wal-Mart and takes vastly more in public benefits than he pays in.

This country is rotten because everyone thinks they are entitled to what Jeff Bezos has. We need a little honesty for a change. The south isn't just the bible belt it is the failure belt. Fareed and David are part of the problem because most of their audience is older. They aren't going to sell their books or be admired if they tell the truth.
Fareed Zakaria's intellect is a national treasure
I agree with Farid absolutely
Listen to Fareed Zakaria, with a healthy dose of skeptisim

It is interesting that he talks about the Netherlands and English and does not mention the expansion of the Atlantic Slave Trade. Much of the current issue with European/US Populism is related to sentiment towards people of African origins.
I was thinking the same thing. A very convenient “detail” to leave out when discussing Dutch economic growth and colonialism
Living through very sad times, that's more correct.
Mr. Brooks is greatly respected! Very observant, logical and reasonable.

economic inequaity continues to grow.... civilizations could collapse
then rebuild with some equality, then inequality grow again, collapse again, rebuild again, cycle continues until people figure out how to bring equality without collapsing the civilization.
Outstanding
I love this guy.
Which one. I hope both?
@@mercedesb2299 You forget : Most of these nations were occupied by the germans , it was the allied nations led by USA that freed them from the shackles of nazi's , thank the USofA for there present happiness .
The US plays a significant role on the global stage, influencing international politics, economy, and security. This global presence provides a level of security and stability & trade that these nations r enjoying Free .
US offers a high standard of living with diverse opportunities for personal and professional development. The American dream of individual success and freedom continues to attract people from around the world & most Innovations happen Here .
Sweden, the top marginal income tax rate can be over 50%, and similar high rates apply in Norway, Denmark, and Finland. This ia a Fact .
Scandinavian countries have high VAT rates, typically around 25%. This tax is applied to most goods and services.
The US has lower overall tax rates, with a greater reliance on private sector services and less comprehensive public welfare programs. This allows for greater personal financial freedom but also means higher out-of-pocket expenses for services like healthcare and education.
The USA: Where opportunity meets ambition.
I think that the untrammelled greed of untrammelled Capitalism has contributed largely to this dissatisfaction with democracy. For that I blame American.

This was a good interview( Thanks to David)
Its Reagan's fault. Who would have thought.

Such respect for David Brooks

And you were advantaged because you weren’t born blind . What is your point?
@@roughhabit9085you're not very good at math, are you?

Maybe it is the income divide, in my circle I don't know anyone who make 250,000. People who make a lot of many tend to live in bubble communities that may feel isolated. I live in a working class neighborhood. See trump and black lives matter in the same street. The more disturbing trend I see in young people is a lack of respect for all religions and beliefs. They are doomed to become the very thing they hate bigots.

God help us
I can live for 5 years on $250,000! Or put another way, I DO live on that much for 5 years at a time.

Coal, oil and gas led to the modern economic miracle. One barrel of oil is equal to 4+ years of manual labor, plus 4000 useful byproducts. The enlightenment and democracies set the stage for innovation. Energy powered it. Money is a claim on future energy resources.
I followed and agree with everything except the second sentence. How does one, say $80, barrel of oil equal 4 years labor?
@@colingenge9999 Compare a human ditch digger with a Ditch Witch which can dig a 1 foot by 7 foot trench for one mile in clay on one barrel of oil. Farid Zakaria rocks the event with enormous intelligence. David Brooks is boring, and not smart.

I wonder if it ever occurred to these two speakers that because of the nature of this presentation, and the elitist place it is being held, nobody who makes under $250,000 per year is ever going to see or hear this. They each stayed in $1000 per hotel rooms the night before.

Fareed: "I grew up in India, in a socialist system" 😅, that's putting it mildly 😀
Brooks is only half right: meaning is falling apart BECAUSE OF the growing uncertainty regarding prosperity.

Great discussion. Alas Trump can’t think at this level. And yet he may be president again. We’re screwed.
How about a 10%(or some amount) life time tax credit for 2 years of public service.
I also think Brooks never fails to try to frame things in an overly simplistic and biased manner. I find his thinking frustrating
Jeez. Talk about a couple of guys who’re full of it and should’ve retired years ago. David, Fareed, retire. You’ve both done more than enough damage.
What are you talking about? Negatively without facts or even what specifically damage they have done. States absolutely nothing intelligible.
Reminds me of Alan Watts' comment "You never hear a priest or pastor preach a sermon about the rich man and the eye of a needle." Neither of these two mentioned the tax system or the utter corruption of government by dark money. Easier to talk about flag waving, "community" and national service. Jeez!
No, Moses didn't part the Red Sea, God did. Moses just follow His directions.
Nonsense, CA is revolutionizing to world with the 4th Industrial Revolution - digitization: the latest, AI with OpenAI and Nvidia. Wake up, old thinkers!
Where is your credibility?
Doesn’t not since exclude anything beforehand? It doesn’t follow that he disdained any empires before the Roman one.
“You can’t do forced mandatory forced National Service” .. I disagree. Americans had conscription. Several liberal democracies in Europe have mandatory service. Why not? ..
