Even if Mercedes it's strong and independent we can't deny that the society still sucks and things like this happens, strong doesn't mean that never hurts
well, in Mercedes's defense, this is a different matter and there are greater consequences that can directly harm her career (in short, she can't risk it all the time)
When black women, especially famous black women, date white men they get ridiculed and called sellouts... so I get we’re she’s coming from, but the writers didn’t handle it well.
She did the same thing whin it came to solos and the musical. In one of the epesodes she and arty are talking and then from out ofno wair she says that's like saying maria can't be black, what the hell does that even mean.
Well thankfully Mercedes didn't listen to her friends. And continued to date Sam. Sidenote,Sam did act a plum fool when he meant Mercedes singer friends tho.
Slayed ByJin if a white women broke up with a man because he was black and she was worried about what people would say, would she be considered racist?
Gregory Bates First of all, black privilege is not a privilege considering it barely benefits black people. Black people are impoverished and hated throughout the nation in this political climate, some black people playing the race card is far from a privilege. And no she's not racist. Nor would any person that can't date a black person because of their relatives reactions. The people that make them afraid to be with the person love are the racists. Not to make this essay any longer but I feel like I should explain context since it's unlikely you're aware. Black people are scorned by other black people for dating white people. Most white people aren't scorned for dating black people because socially that's discouraged. However, black people have a healthy distrust of white people considering their history. But it would be best for white and black people to be able to unite.
okay now that i’m a lot older , this scene resonates with me deeply as a black woman. black women are pretty much fucked in the world of dating bc it be our own men who don’t want us but when go outside our race it’s huge problem with other ppl and most of the time, black women take the wrap with that outdated “bedwench “ mentality. it’s a very unfair game that i hate playing. these writers knew what they were doing with this scene. they probably even received backlash from racist viewers about the relationship. the same thing happened with Zach and Lisa from “Saved by the Bell”. i’m telling y’all, ppl just aren’t comfortable with black women being more open in dating. they’d rather “we stay in our place “ as someone told me.
Everyone saying the reasoning behind this is dumb, but as a black woman I 100% understand where she’s coming from. When we date someone of another race (especially white guys, and especially especially blondes), we get told we hate ourselves and get called all types of names. Our names get dragged in the mud. If you’re in the music industry it can really ruin or stunt your career. We don’t get treated the same way as black men are. Black women are allowed to just like anyone. When I dated my first ever boyfriend (white Latino), everyone in the whole school thought I hated black guys. Interracial dating for us is seen as a statement
This scene made me so angry at Glee. I don't get this at all. Doesn't dating any guy she wants sends a better message and makes her a more powerful woman? How does Mercedes think that the logic of dating a black guy because black girls are supposed to date black guy is ok? Isn't THAT racist? And Sam is totally right. If there is one thing that sunk in for those 3 years they spent in Glee club is that love is love. The fact that Mercedes even let herself think like that for one second makes me sad.
@@Justaguythatcameby It’s not racist to want to be with your own race lol. It’s just standard normal in a black communities for black girls to date black guys but they can date whatever they like.

I didn’t like Mercedes in this scene. Sam looked so crushed. I can’t believe she broke up with him cause he was white like tf? I bet if Sam said he can’t date Mercedes cause she was black.

I honestly think that Mercedes' reason to break up with Sam was so rude, and unnecessary. He was such a great guy and always loved her for who she was. What Mercedes did was so wrong because race doesn't matter. Love is love, and she has to understand that it was not the right thing to do.
