Sad that injuries to Ike Shorunmu and Oliver Kahn kept them out of the tournament. They were very good in this match. We ended up taking Peter Rufai and Germany took Andreas Kopke.

I remember watching this match like yesterday. Truth be told we were outplayed by the German team let's be honest here. We played without a recognized striker in that friendly match too. Okocha was doing an exhibition show in that match. The truth is that all the friendly we played we lost in all of them by a lone goal. We lost to England to a lone goal and lost to the USA after the world cup 94 by a lone goal too.
The difference with that team & now is that we don't have that kinda talent in the current team now. Victor Oshimen wasn't used properly in the last AFCON by our incompetent coach that rode his luck to the finals. We didn't have a midfield either which was shocking. Used Alex Owobi as a defensive midfielder that didn't suit his style or strength either.
On November 16 1994, Nigeria 🇳🇬 lost to England 🏴 1-0 with a goal header from David Platt (England) The English national football team didn't qualify for that year's world cup finals in America. On April 22 1998, Nigeria 🇳🇬 lost to Germany 🇩🇪 1-0. On May 29 1998, Nigeria lost to Yugoslavia 3-0 and within a week Nigeria lost to the Netherlands 5-1 (June 5 1998)
Such a shame that Shorunmu got injured just before the tournament. Always thought Rufai cost us iń the tournament
Yes Shorunmu got injured and broke his arm before the tournament, but it wasn't at the national football team, that he broke his arm. It was while he was playing for his club that he broke his arm.

On Wednesday 22 April 1998, Nigeria and Germany played together in a friendly match. The Nigerian football goalie was Ike Shorunmu who kept a clean sheet in the first half then in the second half at 46 minutes, he was substituted, and replaced by Nigeria's second-choice (William Okpara) only for him (Okpara) to concede a goal from the Peter Moller at 58 minutes. When Moller scored, Okpara (Nigeria) touched the ball a bit with his (Okpara's) hand, but to no avail, the ball still entered the net, and that's how it became a 1-0 victory for Germany.
Sounds like the goal is Okpara's fault, which it is not.
@@squaner1 When Nigeria conceded a 1-0 victory from Germany, it wasn't Okpara's fault. Peter Moller scored the goal at a high speed, so that was why William Okpara (Nigeria) conceded the goal, though he touched the ball a bit, and that was how it became a 1-0 victory for Germany.

When you watch this match you'll pity the current Super Eagles because we don't have a coach.
It's not about this... We lack good players
You are watching only highlight, some us that were old enough to understand football complained about this performance, Germany were just wasteful on the day.
We don't have a coach and we don't have these kind of players anymore.
We have players who can make us just like the good old days but we need coach that has eyes & brain to put them together

Our current super eagles with the exception of Osimhen, don't have the passion like their predecessors.. These men gave it their all whenever they are on Green White Green

Our current super eagles Team lack this same Spirit our old Players used then
And look at the caliber of keepers we had... Ike shorunmu started and Ndubuisi Egbo came in and kept a clean slate!
There was also Peter side Idah and Abiodun Baruwa by the sides.
There was no Ndubuisi Egbo in that game, it was Willy Okpara who back then was based in SA

The Nigerian football team btw 1990 and 1998 are the greatest in the history of our football. Though my hopes rose when Mikel Obi and Ogbuke Sunday came around. I stopped watching Nigerian football matches after that.
Nigeria 🇳🇬 did not play in Italia 90. If you're talking about the best times in the national football team of the country then, you should say between 1994 and 2002.
This "failed" German team in WC and Euro is even more impressive than German team 2023.

Vogts (the coach) wouldn't play Möller (the scorer) in crucial games at this World Cup. If Germany had had a better coach in the 1990s they could have potentially won the 1994 World Cup. I thought they had the best team in the world at that time.
