Sucks Bosh didn’t get a chance due to the US helping rig the election as Bosh was Left leaning (US feared DR going the same way as Cuba). The man is a scar in Dominican Culture. Too bad he was a crazy SOB who in the end of its dictatorship was so paranoid even the U.S wanted him out of the picture.

Ironically I just ordered a book from Amazon on Trujillo since I couldn't find a lot of information about him like an hour or two before discovering this video lol. My grandfather , who was a soldier under him was eventually marked for death and had to go into hiding in some small village. They lived in fear and couldn’t go outside due to the large network of spies/snitches all throughout the country. The regime was known for making entire families disappear without a trace.
On my other side of the family, my grandmother had a miscarriage from the shear terror of the secret police arriving in front of their home. “Fortunately” for my family they didn’t come for them. But unfortunately , They came for one of their neighbors in the middle of the night and no one saw that family ever again.
After the tyrant was killed (only reason my grandfather and his kids lived) it wasn’t over yet.
Ramfis did round up all suspected people and tortured / slaughtered them. The Dominican military divided by allegiance went to war with each other (before the civil war of 1965)
One of my aunts recalls as a little girl running and hiding under the bed because she could literally hear the Air Force P51s shooting their machine guns above their house down at the Army tanks and bullets penetrating their roof.
And what most outsiders are not of aware of , is that Balaguer was a continuation of the dictator regime. Only difference was that we was more liberal , more geopolitically acceptable , and less blatant with his tyranny compared to Trujillo. But political rivals still got taken out and he ruled with a heavy hand.
Trujillo’s circle are not gone. Many of the elite classes that carry high level positions in many institutions and who are the wealthiest , are of that circle or at least descended from them.

People tend to forget that the hate between Dominican Republic and Haití is not just racism is history, for those who don’t know Dominican Republic was invaded by Haití in 1822 and it last 22 years with a strong militar regimen, Dominicans couldn’t even have proprieties and were rob of their lands, and also were rob of their culture and costumes and impone Haitians cultures. That is why the island is divided how it is know cuz actually before the invasion the island was divided in half. And their is still hate between SOME Dominicans and Haitians because in the schools in Haití they teach them our country is their country (this was said by Haitians not Dominicans) and sometimes there is even talks about a new invasion so of course SOME Dominicans feel threatened. (This is not the case for everyone). (just wanted to point out is not just racism) (and if u watch the video completely u will know why most of Dominicans (the older generation) are racists, even black people in this country are racist to themselves (the older generation).

Why do Haitians hate Dominicans? Relations between the two countries have never been good. From its origin and genesis, Haiti usurped territory from the pre-existing Spanish colony of Santo Domingo I think Haiti was a mistake of the French and as a neighboring country they are the worse. After their war against France from 1791 to 1804, including horrors such as the genocide of all whites and incursions into the Spanish part where Dessalines committed massacres, in 1822 to 1844 the Haitians invaded and occupied the Dominican part, which in an unequal war managed to separate from your bad neighbors. Another turning point was in 1937 when Trujillo ordered the massacre of hundreds of Haitians for their growing illegal occupation of Dominican territory, rustling and other crimes. The figure varies according to different sources; the graves have never been found.

Whoa. I'm half 🇵🇷 and 🇩🇴 and I never would've thought you'd cover Triujillo. The man was DR'S Hitler. I'm very light skin myself with Euro facial features but this is just heartbreaking. Everyone should be treated with respect regardless of skin tone. The dude hated himself and it's funny to me because lots of Dominicans would be seen as black here in the states even though not all of them are. There's nothing wrong with having African DNA. It's sad that some Dominicans still think like this 😔.

Oh please if you want to convince Dominicans of accepting the racist and dehumanizing U.S one drop rule, you are only promoting a racist doctrine that one claim to be vehemently against. How about you focus on how in the 2010 census over 70% of Puerto Ricans considered themselves as white, and know in the most recent one only 3% of Puerto Ricans labeled themselves as white.

Correction: Our language is actually called Haitian Creole as it is different from other creole languages that have French as their base. Still enjoyed the video as easier to digest than when I first learned it and more info that I didn't know.

If anyone wants to read a good novel about the Dominican during his reign, can I steer you to 'The Dictator' by David Layton. His time in power was so weird.

My mother's husband's father was Balaguer's roommate in NYC. He was a Trujillo Loyalist and had to scram to NY when Trujillo was assassinated. He was my brother's Grandfather and the guy was German looking and green eyed. Also, my own grandfather was a carpenter and was forced to help build one of Trujillo's mansions.
