Making a Wrap-Around Ring: A Silversmithing Tip

- This tutorial shows how to create one nice variation of a bypass ring.
For this one, I bezel-set a 7 mm Swiss Blue Topaz for a stunning centerpiece to a classic ring design. I would categorize this as an intermediate project. The materials I used were: 18 gauge sterling round wire, 10 gauge sterling square wire, and 3/16 inch fine silver bezel strip in 26 gauge. As always, I am using Hard silver sheet solder, and My-T-Flux from Rio Grande. This tutorial features the steps to making a bezel for a faceted stone as well.
I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, as I've taught people for most of my life. This hobby turned into a fun side gig for me for years while I taught public school. I love suggestions and hearing about others' experiences. What is your favorite project? What kind of tutorials would you find useful? Scroll down for information on my new Patreon!

Love the ring.
Thanks S Friday! I like how it turned out, but I wish I had a stone that was London blue instead. I like it better than the Swiss blue:)
nice work mate
Thanks PK! I was pleased with this one for sure:)
I like it!!
Thanks Ted! I was pleased with how this one turned out:). Thanks for the nice comment!
Beautiful ❤️ I made a ring similar to that where it wraps around but instead of cupping the centre stone, I twisted the ends outwards after wrapping around.
I don't make many rings as I find I really struggle with them but this is so beautiful I think I will have to put my fears aside and give it a go 😊
Thank you for a grate tutorial xx
You’re welcome Kim! Glad you liked it:)
Hi Chad, love your ingenuity. I've found if I bend the curves before cutting the exta length off, I can get a greater rounded (& easier) effect.
Necessity is the mother of invention after all.
Thanks Lisa! That’s a really good point! I appreciate your nice comment:)
@Chad’s Silversmithing Sharing is caring❣️ Much like your channel, I love my trade & am always excited to help/see others on their journey.
Spot on! I was thnking the same. More annealing also helps.
I always find your videos interesting Im not sure I have the strength you do. That being said would it be any easier to use round wire? Of course the ends would be more pointed, Beautiful ring
Hello Verda. You could probably use round wire instead; it’ll just have a little different look. You might try doing some of the shaping while it is still attached to a longer piece, as that will give you some bending leverage, and then cut it to length:)
Chad question for you. First i do not have a mill to flatten the ends. So for those who don’t have a mill what do you think about hand forging the end? I know it stretched the metal so one would want to use a much shorter piece and hand forge then file and smooth? What do you think?
Absolutely. Hammering something works pretty well too:)
Could you have bent the wire first then flatten with a file? Beautiful ring.
That would likely work:)
Wow, that's a real beauty! Thanks for sharing Chad and take care.
Thanks Gazz! You too.
