      Clearance issues aren't the only problem when it comes to putting your hands in the air on a coaster. The old TTD famously said "arms down" for a reason- the speed at which you launch can overextend limbs causing you to dislocate them. Had it happen to a teacher of mine back in the day that thought they were a badass haha. Ended up in a cast and PT for weeks.

      I'd be interested too, but I expect any method to be so cheap compared to other operating costs, that efficiency isn't a consideration. I did some quick figures and would be surprised if a lift hill uses more than a dollar worth of electricity per train lifted, even for a giga. I assume fast launches are less efficient because they have to fight air resistance during the launch.

    • @Demoralized88
      @Demoralized88 10 месяцев назад

      Doing some rough head estimation, ICE vehicle of similar weight from 0 to 70-100mph is maybe 5 to 10 cents of fuel at lower efficiency. Even a tall lift hill is a relatively small amt of work definitely being less than a KWh easily. Dollars per day per big ride launch in energy and absolutely miniscule compared to lights and other infrastructure. Kind of interesting to think about but ultimately it's a tiny amount of work (thus energy) compared to driving or even running central AC

    I think this is probably the overall best thing CP could have done given the circumstances. It is absolutely disappointing that the original punchy hydraulic launch is now gone to history, but once you consider that it was probably gonna go soon anyway due to its unreliability, this is probably the best solution for CP to increase the reliability of the ride, thus increasing daily ridership and reducing maintenance costs, while reusing the layout and paying tribute to the original ride in some way.

      It won't have the same punch as that hydraulic launch but it will have more sustained speed so it might feel faster that way and the 100+mph backwards launch might make up for it. a 100mph backwards launch into a spike and subsequent 120mph forward launch does sound pretty cool and intense. If I could guess what GP feedback for Top Thrill Dragster was during it's lifetime, it'd be that it was closed when a guest visited, or that they rode it and felt it was too short of a ride for the time they waited. The revamp should address both of those things. I'm glad I got to ride it in it's original form.

    I think Top Thrill 2 has the potential to offer one of the best feelings of pure speed on a coaster. While other ones are faster, the acceleration of a hydraulic launch seems to rob a bit of the feeling of speed to me. It's hard to really appreciate just how fast you're going with such an intense but short launch. I imagine the second launch would be somewhat of a highlight, as you are already going faster than the vast majority of coasters, only to feel even more acceleration kick in as you go across the launch track. That feeling of going very, very fast and then somehow accelerating even more, all while being exposed to the rushing air, is likely to be a very fun and unique sensation. Sure, other launches like this have been done before, but the sheer scale of it is likely to really enhance the feeling.

    The launch was the essence of Top Thrill Dragster, but with the new spike, it’s a very different ride. My preference would have been for the station/transfer track to be moved close to the start of the curve up to the top hat so that the first launch could be backwards up to 100mph, giving the full reverse-freefall coaster experience up the new spike, before the second launch up to top speed. The rollbacks on the top hat and three passes along that straight stretch will probably be pretty uneventful, so I’m hoping they add some theming near to the track to emphasise the speed. No doubt it’ll still be an awesome ride experience apart from that.

    It appears that there really won't be a separate unloading-station which I find to be a shortsighted decision. I know that trains aren't cheap, and separate loading + unloading requires another half station and a 4th train, but it really elevates the dispatch quality.
    Also, just like a hydraulic launch, an LSM launch needs to "reset" itself because this much energy can not be delivered live from the grid, instead it requires a powerful capacitative buffer which needs to be charged up before every launch cycle, and degradation of electrical energy storage is exponentially related to the charging speed. Because the total amount of energy that needs be delivered per launch cycle is enormous, the slow accelleration lowers the required buffering the capacitor has to accomplish, and it may be the only feasible way to accomplish this - for Zamperla at least. They are not industry-leaders in this area, and Indrivetec has shown with Red Force what they can deliver.

    This was the breakdown I was thirsty for! Key to capacity will indeed be taking advantage of aggressive timing/programming. I'm thinking if they group the switch, spike, top hat and block brake together it will be hard to hit that 70s dispatch interval. Lets go with your estimate of 45s from launch to cresting the top hat, and then add say 15s to clear the block brake, giving us around 60s to clear an advance from staging (great catch, I didn't see that until you pointed it out). Next, the switch track moves and the train must advance out of the staging block and come to a complete stop on the launch (assumption). You think the switch will be 3s... and the entire train will advance from stage and be ready for launch in 7s?!? Perhaps I missed something.
    Big thanks Ryan for sharing your thoughts with us! As a former TTD ride-op, I trust your intuition! I hope Zamp nails this and despite not breaking significant records I think TT2 will kick butt! I'm very grateful CP brought Dragster back and can't wait to get that credit.

      > and then add say 15s to clear the block brake
      They don't need to wait for this, you can dispatch the second train the second the first one has cleared the top hat because you have all the way until the 2nd forward launch to abort. All they have to do is switch the launch side LSMs to trim/brake and it'll prevent the second launch from clearing the hat. Rolling start will likely greatly improve the initial cycle time, I'm still of the opinion that it's designed for 60 second dispatch/cycle.

I know the hydraulic launch on dragster wasnt the greatest, but it WAS the launch that made it so great. and it was just such an iconic coaster to begin with and beloved by many, even with its faults. the name isnt exciting, and i feel like its going to be half the coaster is was. i wont know until i ride it, which im going to do first thing in the 2024 season. i guess i just loved that ride so much, that seeing it change is kinda hard. i have a lot of good memories there. while i doubt it, i hope cedar point can make it just as fun as all of the memories i have with it was.

    They replaced an awesome drive system and put in a reliable-but-wimpy drive system with 1/3 the force, so it takes three passes to store up enough energy to get over the top hat. What the old system could with one punch now takes three 1/3 shoves.
    The spike isn't a feature, it allows them to under-size the drive system ($$$/3) and save money.

    if zamperla can bring the train from 120 mph to 0 with magnetic brakes and a trim at the end, the track switch could switch over to station right after the train passes the switch, then you would wait on it cresting the top hat to advance the train. If the train rolls back, then brakes can slow it down to a slow speed and a trim brake could stop it before the switch. This would save 3 seconds, but I dont think this will happen because it would be too complex and the GP might not like it due to the precision involved

    Based off the length of the station building in the animation it looks to be a separate load/unload station. The is should mean the can dispatch trains faster from the station whilst giving the unloading train time to unload without rushing guests like originally. If so, then the capacity will be fine.
    Overall I think the revamp is good and pretty much exactly what I expected, I still do think Ka will end up being better though. But the better ride will probably be up to everyone’s personal preference.

    As we have seen with wildcat. The ride will have to have its brake sections cleared before sending the next train to avoid an accident. Plus you have to account for the fact that this ride can still rollback at the top of the tophat. It's still possible for magnetic launches to not create enough push to drive the train all the way up to the top. I think taking that in mind I am not so sure that this is going to be close to the capacity dragster gave. There is also the fact that not all 3 trains may run all the time. Maintenance has to be done sometimes or a train might have a problem and need to come off the track which would reduce capacity again. so what you predicted is dragster on its best day.

    • @bearclaw5115
      @bearclaw5115 Год назад

      If I had to bet, I'd say that they will likely increase capacity with these renovations. After all they've had 20 years to improve upon the original. I'm sure they will set the launch system to reliably get the trains over the top hat. They have 3 chances to accelerate the train and no doubt the LSM's are precise and easily adjusted.

    • @seanl8930
      @seanl8930 Год назад

      @bearclaw5115 no doubt LSMs are reliable but can still fail to get trains up to speed. Even with the spike and acceleration the max speed is still 120 MPH with all that combined so in the event the winds are bad or the track is cold a rollback can still occur. There are other rides with lsms that can rollback as well so it's not proven to prevent that overall full throttle to name one
