Well I have been a GREAT fan of Leyla's for many years and I thought I knew/seen everything of hers, but some of those lovely pictures you posted I have never seen A great and rare trat for me so THANK YOU!!!
thank you for posting. never heard that one. a truly great artist. She never ever tried to imitate Callas. They were contemporaries who had the same repertoire and dramatic intensity. Gencer had the more beautiful sound, i think, and her career lasted twice as long as Callas'. But EVERYONE stood in Callas' shadow. and not always rightly so, i think.
OMG the high C is so effortless! And the ridiculously difficult coloratura bit in the middle (which I have tried often times and failed, oh well I'm a Wagnerian!) sounds so much more beautiful than Bartoli's gargles... BRAVA
Magnifique, magnifique, magnifique ! Merci !
Magnificent!!!!

No Mozart-soprano ever stood in Callas shadow. Because Callas never was a good Mozart singer.
Señorial, finísima, redonda, leve, natural, un ángel.
Gracias por traerlo.
Thanks a lot for posting this!
Rest in Peace La Diva Turca!

Lovely singing. TY dance for posting
Gencer never studied with de Hidalgo. Her teacher was Giannina Arangi Lombardi
@robertdonkers Gencer performed Liu from Turandot and Wagner's Tannhauser.
Turkish Primadonna Leyla Gencer
A lovely rounded tone, not as strident as Callas, ah well, everyone has their own favourites....
I don't think that Gencer ever tried to copy Callas. A lot of their similarities are due to them both being students of Elvira de Hidalgo.
Gencer best!
@zizeus She was always herself. Callas was one of her rivals - as I know. So, the best she could do, was to stay true to herself...
This is lovely and only rivaled be Gruberova in my view.
Please, she was everything Callas ever was. On top of that, she actually had a beautiful voice and a great technique, which Callas never had.
I believe that while she was in Turkey, at the Ankara Conservatory she did study under de Hidalgo as well as Arrangi Lombardi.
@zizeus she never did that!! they're quite different
I don't think she ever tried to imitate Callas.
Finally herself and not trying to imitate callas, well done wonderfull wouw.
