Program Notes
FLAUTINA was composed in 1989 as a birthday present for Kathinka Pasveer; she is a flute-spirit in a human form; magically enchanting. In “Flautina” the Eve-formula of “Licht” is stretched to four times its original duration over the combined ranges of the flute, piccolo, and alto flute. As Stockhausen stated, the score calls for the interpreter to bridge the changes of instruments with sung and hummed notes and it includes rushing noise, kissing-noises above the mouth-hole with beating of the keys, tongue clicks and sighing, flutter-tongue-noise alternating with irregularly staccato spitting-noises, voiceless whistling, a microtonal scale, rhythmic vibrato, timbral trills and alternate fingerings for a variety of colors.
