This is very good, but it is not Toby Fox. It's not even remotely Toby Fox. For starters, melody is by far the most important aspect of any Toby Fox track. A strong and instantly memorable melody is the backbone of Toby's style. The melody should be the focus. It should grab you and keep you the entire time. Even very experimental tracks like Big Shot have a catchy melody throughout. Second off is soundfonts. You need to use soundfonts, at least in the drums. Soundfonts are a huge part of his sound and it's just not a Toby track without them. Third, counterpoint and layering. Toby's music has a lot of counterpoint in it. There's a bunch of tracks that have multiple melodies running in and out of each other. Fourth, effects. Toby is always playing with effects and mixing. Some effects are simple like delay and reverb, but he's also constantly playing with panning, equalization, compressors, and other effects to get cool results. This track feels more like a traditional chiptune track. Something out of classic Pokemon or Megaman. Good job, but it's definitely not Toby Fox.
you're right about the counterpoint and layered melody's, but the rest of it matches perfectly with what you're saying. i used the SGM soundfont for the drums and piano, the melody is very upfront (and in my opinion, fairly memorable), i put delay, reverb, and vibrato on the melody, and reverb on everything else. you're definitely right about the counter melody though. toby fox would have made the counter melody move differently than the melody instead of just making it two notes up in the scale. i actually really appreciate your criticism. not many people are brave enough to critique stuff on the internet nowadays. thank you, and I'm glad you liked my song.
it’s definitely not pokemon, they don’t use many pitch shifts in the older games (or even really in the new ones). a lot of people are saying shovel knight, and i’d have to agree.
What you're describing are techniques that you should be using in any piece of music to enhance it's impact. Claiming that such fundamentals as strong melody are explicitly Toby Fox staples is silly to say the least
I've seen a few comments saying it sounds like Undertale yellow, i think the reason is because me and the creator of the Undertale Yellow OST both tried to replicate toby's style, and i guess we both accidently made it different in a similar way.
The arpeggios and the square harmony/chords dont really sound right. It sounds more like something from an old sega game. Also, pitch bends aren't really used in Toby Fox songs, so the melody didn't really sound like something Toby Fox would make. However, the song itself still sounds great and I enjoyed listening to it:) really the whole point of this comment is to say that you made something using your own mind and your own style, and you shouldn't think of it as something someone else would make. You are you, and whatever you create by yourself is yours. Unless you were purposefully trying to create a Toby Fox song, which then I would say to try and consider my earlier comments. Anyway, I have a huge migraine so my communication skills are not really at their best. Hopefully you understood something though.
It’s nothing like Toby Fox. Now, Scott Pilgrim or classic Megaman would work with this, but Toby Fox never makes anything this simple. There’s no background drums, the melody is just not memorable enough, and most importantly, it doesn’t build to anything, and there’s no counterpoint. All of these are essential in Toby Fox’s music.
for the lead I used the magical 8_but plugin, and used a square wave with vibrato, then added delay and reverb. And for the harmony synths I used NES vst, and messed with the duty cycle settings.
ngl being a Toby fox fan kinda ruined my life bc now all my songs sound like USTs of undertale, and it’s hard for me to make background music because I KEEP ADDING MORE OMG UGH
I used SGM soundfont piano 3, earthbound soundfont percussion, magical 8-bit noise for more percussion, NES-vst for harmony squares and triangle bass, and magical 8-bit square with vibrato for the lead.
You're right. i guess since the person who did the UTY ost and I were both trying to emulate toby's style, we both made it sound slightly different from him in a similar way. like how birds and insects both have wings that developed independently.

i used magical 8-bit (epik for lead melodies with vibrato) and NES-vst (cool for if you want more duty cycle control for neat sounds)

Arpeggio's on point imo
It sounds like a mix of Spear Of Justice and Enemy Retreating from UTY
it's more UTY than anything, but still a banger
mainly b/c of the effects on the nes vst (especially reverb and delay), and the non-cut piano
