- A new deal has been agreed at the UN climate summit in Dubai after days of negotiations.
For the first time, the deal calls on all countries to move away from using fossil fuels - but not to phase them out, something many governments wanted.
The text recognises the need for deep, rapid and sustained reductions if humanity is to limit temperature rises to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.
The COP28 president said nations had "confronted realities and... set the world in the right direction".

I feel for these small islands but the truth is we will take time before we leave fossil fuels but this accelerates new tech. We just can’t and won’t survive using solar and wind, we need something reliable not intermittent. Hydrogen powered plants would be the way.

the reason you're hearing about it is because of bot spam.
No one expects politicians to solve an engineering problem, not within their skill set. Had hoped they would deal with reality, there is something they could do, but won't. All they seem to accomplish is throwing money away without accomplishing anything. First recognize that anymore and 20% wind & solar the grid becomes unstable but this would allow the world to commit to actually funding 20% wind & solar energy production. Second, natural gas is a cleaner alternative to coal so setting a goal of shutting down all coal power generation in 2024 and switch to natural gas until a new alternative fuel is created. Third, the world needs a new fuel and will fund research & development into a new cleaner fuels. Fourth, commit to developing new technologies and target switch to occur in 2030's. As Boomers die off and their trillions of wealth pass on, that commitment to switch to new technologies in 2030's would be funded. These are things that could be done but stupid politicians didn't accomplish anything.

The issue of greenhouse gas emissions has been replaced by the use of fossil fuels for some reason. The circumstances of clean natural energy vary a lot by each country. Not a few developing countries would be better off replacing old coal power plants with low-emission cheap coal power plants rather than transitioning to clean natural energy all at once. BTW A hypocritical country mined brown coal and operated old coal power plants, determined to abolish nuclear PPs completely and bought up a lot of LNG after the cheap natural gas supplier she depended on have started war, that caused energy shortage in poor countries.
