Why do you need to use the second string(a) as another D it does thicken it up a bit but it’s bloody awkward to stretch yer pinky up to the fifth fret just to get another D , that’s three D’s and contortionist spaghetti fingers, a bit of well placed plectruming and you can miss the A string , you could even leave it in and have a DA drone thing going on , you can even, using your 1st finger on the A string follow the progression two frets behind . Or, forget the bass notes except for the bass beat and only pick the top three strings for a folksy kinda vibe
