NATO expands not by taking territory but by countries that want to join it and stay as part of NATO, joining NATO itself is quite a long process and any country can leave NATO just like Britain for example left the EU so NATO expands to cheers and congratulations and nobody gets hurt unless they party too much.
Anyway NATO expands mostly because of Russian aggression you know like how Russia/USSR invaded Finland for example or how Russia/USSR invaded Ukraine, Georgia, Poland together with the Nazis side by side basically.
You say two of the most devastating wars in the world are because of Europe which is exactly my point, NATO prevents that. As for Russias part in the wars:

In WW2 Russia makes a pact with the nazis called Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and together with the nazis invades countries of Europe starting with Poland.
And you are saying NATO is the escalator in Europe not USSR and Russia, please. Almost all European countries live side by side in peace there is only some tension between Serbia and Kosovo and constant tension between Russia and basically most neighboring countries so again NATO is not the issue but the solution for Europe to finally be safe and free of the constant Russian aggression.
