Bhupen Hazarika learned lessons on classical music from Ustad Bismillah Khan in Benaras when he studied BA and MA there. However, he got scholarship from Columbia University in the USA to study MA in Communications when he worked at Akashbani in Calcutta for a very brief period as a producer. He could not leave Akashbani on lien as he worked there only one and a half years--a period which didn't qualify him to seek lien. He himself said this in an interview later in life. However, he subsequently left Calcutta by ship as the then Indian government didn't let him go to the US by air. It was perhaps due to the attitude of the then narrow minded bureaucracy which still appears as an obstacle in many cases. He suffered many obstacles in his life. Perhaps, he is so close to the hearts of Bengalees because of his resilience to reach his goals. Another thing is that Bangladesh's Khulna's son lyricist Sibdas Banerjee had a significant role behind popularizing Bhupen Hazarika.
Bhupen Hazarika has been my favorite singer since i was born because my father used to always bray his songs every time when i sleep (he still does). I have been listening to his songs from my father but i didn''t like it but as i grew up i started to love his songs as i understood the meaning. Now i became like my father, always listening to his songs and singing them. I really love his songs. I appreciate this great man a lot i hope he is peaceful in the other world.

Bhupen Hazarika learned lessons on classical music from Ustad Bismillah Khan in Benaras when he studied BA and MA there. However, he got scholarship from Columbia University in the USA to study MA in Communications when he worked at Akashbani in Calcutta for a very brief period as a producer. He could not leave Akashbani on lien as he worked there only one and a half years--a period which didn't qualify him to seek lien. He himself said this in an interview later in life. However, he subsequently left Calcutta by ship as the then Indian government didn't let him go to the US by air. It was perhaps due to the attitude of the then narrow minded bureaucracy which still appears as an obstacle in many cases. He suffered many obstacles in his life. Perhaps, he is so close to the hearts of Bengalees because of his resilience to reach his goals. Another thing is that Bangladesh's Khulna's son lyricist Sibdas Banerjee had a significant role behind popularizing Bhupen Hazarika.

Bhupen Hazarika has been my favorite singer since i was born because my father used to always bray his songs every time when i sleep (he still does). I have been listening to his songs from my father but i didn''t like it but as i grew up i started to love his songs as i understood the meaning. Now i became like my father, always listening to his songs and singing them. I really love his songs. I appreciate this great man a lot i hope he is peaceful in the other world.
