Creepy Spooker I saw him in LA years ago and he was amazing. I still remember how mesmerizing his Phantom was in the musical. And I still get goosebumps when I hear him sing this song.
There are no words in my vocabulary that completely encompasses how breathtaking, beautiful, haunting and captivating this is. Michael is without a doubt the best Phantom ever. He manages to capture the longing, the power, the seduction, the tenderness, the brokenness, the hauntingly angelic voice.. No one else does it quite the same..
Near the end, it's all quiet and peaceful as the song is drawing to its close. All is silent. And then... BAM!!!! ORGAN SOLO OUTTA NOWHERE IN YOUR EARBUDS!!!!
I often hear a lot of people criticizing Crawford's performance because his voice is "too high," "too weak," "Not operatic enough," and a lot of other things. While I do understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and completely respect them, I have to completely disagree with them when they say things like this. It's true that Crawford has a higher voice than most other actors, and maybe he was never formally trained in opera like some, but what matters is that his voice is like no other. I might be digging myself into a deep hole by saying this, but with complete respect to the other actors, a lot of them, not all of them, but a lot of them sound very similar. I am not saying that these actors are bad. Quite the contrary. In fact, I absolutely adore most of the actors that I am referring to. I think that they make wonderful phantom's and have astounding voices. It's just that, Michael Crawford has such a distinctive voice, it's hard not to single him out. I'm not just talking about how high his voice is, I'm talking about everything else about it as well. This might sound strange, but the thing that got me hooked on his portrayal was not anything special that he added to his portrayal. In fact, it was was what he didn't add. Michael Crawford is a minimalist. Some people might argue that minimalism in boring, or takes away from a performance, but in my mind in brings so much more to it. It brings humanity. One mistake that most actors make with the phantom is the over use of vibrato. As a singer who uses vibrato, I completely understand the need for it. It's a nice accent and adds something different to one's voice. There is a point, however, when it becomes too much and ends up taking away from the actual performance. Michael Crawford seems to understand this very well. He uses just enough, so that it adds something a little different to his voice, but it does not take away from anything else. When I close my eyes and listen to his voice, I feel as though I am riding on this soft wave. It is hypnotic and lulls me to sleep. It isn't forceful or angry. Perhaps I am getting too into this, but I like to think of the calmness of Crawford's voice at the beginning of the show as a sort of "calm before the storm". Comparing him in this song to him in "The Final Lair" is very interesting. You can see just how much he has fallen apart throughout the show. He transforms from this beautiful, calm, dare I say seductive figure into this broken, frantic, childish wreck at the end. Crawford's "All I Ask of You, Reprise," is heart wrenching. He sings it entirely in a falsetto, and the smoothness of his voice sounds so vulnerable, lost, quiet and child-like. It makes me cry. Crawford is the only actor (that I know of) that has ever captured every single aspect of the phantom in his performance. From the way he moves (don't even get me started on that) and sounds to the way he acts. It's all there. Also, just listen to one of his interviews for "Phantom." His love and devotion to the role are very evident in those. If you actually took the time to read this long essay, then I thank you. This is something that has been bothering me for a long time and I had to get it off of my chest. I didn't even say half of what I wanted to on here, so I hope that I got my point across. Once again, I didn't mean to offend anyone. If I did, then I'm sorry. I just wanted to get my opinion on this matter out there. Thank you!
My FAVORITE 'Phantom' song, sung by the greatest Phantom of them all. Others have portrayed the Phantom well, but few can match Michael Crawford. This recording, from the original 'Phantom of the Opera' soundtrack, was a graduation gift 30 years ago. Still have it.
I despise musicals per say but, I had the pleasure of going to The Phantom of the Opera twice. One of them was one of Michael Crawford’s last performances before he retired from Phantom. It absolutely sent chills through my entire body. He was mesmerizing. The power he has singing is just incredible. Michael Crawford was the first and only Phantom of the Opera, in my opinion. I’ll remember it for the rest of my life.
The best male vocal performance of all time. Hands down. The beautiful warbling, the melodious notes, the perfect harmony with the instrumentals make this the best performanceof all time. No crackling in the voice at all. Angels could not sing better.

The very sound of his voice sends chills up and down my spine. I know "unique" is an overused word, but I feel it truly applies to Michael Crawford's voice.
Michael Crawford does have a great voice, but I don't think it's good for Phantom. When I think of Phantom, I think powerful and mysterious. Crawford just doesn't have that. I think he'd be better for Raoul.
I'm of the opposite opinion. No one else can do it for me. His voice is so unique and doesn't sound like anything I've ever heard. Other Phantoms are great, but they all kind of sound almost the same. Michael captures the darkness and the light with his voice so beautifully. He just sounds ethereal. My opinion. 💟

They wanted to show how proud and happy they were with me for singing it very well! Another friend of mine told my parents that my song brought tears 😭 into her eyes! They were happy tears!
I used to be such a stickler about the quality of the singer singing this song, like who's got the most powerful and boisterous voice, but as I've gotten older and more invested in acting and theatre, I find that nobody encapsulated the ghoulish nature of the phantom in song the way Michael Crawford did. Just...beautiful.
Michael Crawford is the one and only Phantom of the Opera. His voice sends chills through me. Love you Michael. Noone comes close. Most amazing voice ever
Not only do I just love his voice, but his range, when you think about it, is freaking nuts! Yeah, I've heard people who can go higher, but because they've got that high range, they can't hit the lower notes. And yet Michael Crawford has a pretty strong high voice AND an awesome low voice!

It's funny, I first heard this song totally out of context from the story, so until recently, I've always heard this as sort of a lullaby: the phantom is inviting the listener to close their eyes and go off into the night to experience beautiful fantasies.

Nighttime sharpens, heightens each sensation
Darkness stirs and wakes imagination
Silently the senses abandon the defenses
Slowly, gently, night unfurls its splendor
Grasp it, sense it - tremulous and tender
Turn your face away from the garish light of day
Turn your thoughts away from cold unfeeling light
And listen to the music of the night
Close your eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams
Purge all thoughts of the life you knew before
Close your eyes let your spirit start to soar
And you'll live as you've never lived before
Softly, deftly music shall caress you
Hear it, feel it secretly poseess you
Open up your mind let your fantasies unwind
In this darkness which you know you cannot fight
The darkness of the music of the night
Let your mind start a journey through a strange new world
Leave all thoughts of the life you knew before
Let your soul take you where you long to be
Only then can you belong to me
Floating, folding, sweet intoxication
Touch me, trust me, savour each sensation
let the dream begin let your darker side give in
to the power of the music that I write
The power of the music of the night
You alone can make my song take flight
Help me make the music of the night

exfuckingSCUSE ME
I am the first person to comment! oh yeah. I love Michael. *sigh*
@lmamd87 When I figured out that Frank Spencer was the Phantom of the Opera I believe I wept with joy that the world could be so amazing XD
they have not made a word yet to describe Micheal Crawford's voice. The word shall be Crawfordness. That's right. If you hear someone sing like this (highly doubt you will) they have Crawfordness. Or they sing Crawfordly.
Goddamnit, my underwear is floating out the window again! Curse Michael Crawford and the sorcery that is his voice!!
I second that!
Michael Crawford
@abugfilms my voice lesson teach is having me learn this song. and i would have to say it is definitely stretching me ha ha. :D Gotta love Andrew Loyd Webber. xD
JEASUS CHRIST THAT END SCARED ME
@Poet2916 I've sung this to several girls... Haven't had one yet that appreciated that I can actually hit the notes.
Crawford is really good and he is the original. I personally prefer Colm Wilkinson but this is definitely number 2
4:38 - Help me make the music of the night...
Cool phantom of the opera
i prefer michaels version. i really love this song.
Just... Bravo. Should have sent a poet.
I don't even like this show that much, but I love Michael Crawford. Maybe I'd like the show more if I saw him perform. Unfortunately, I wasn't born when he was playing the phantom.
Mattyice36 ::: Very sad to say but, you missed an opportunity of a lifetime by not going to POTO and hearing the exquisite voice of Michael Crawford.
