But the counterpoint is utterly obscured by the sustain pedal, which should *NEVER* be used when playing Bach’s music on the grand piano! It’s much too resonants, and Lupu doesn’t not play with his usual technical clarity, at all….it sounds weirdly like Debussy, which is all wrong! I can’t believe that anyone who has actually studied Bach’s keyboard works would believe this is great playing…it is not, but Lupu was very young and at the time I suppose this was acceptable, until Glenn Gould showed the world how to tame the “monster’s” resonance.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like Bach at all….because Lupu used the sustain pedal, everything turns to thick mush to the degree that the counterpoint is entirely lost. And since Bach’s music exemplifies the highest point that the art of counterpoint ever achieved, if the pianist can’t reproduce that complexity, there’s absolutely *no point* to even pick up the score, let alone learn the notes!! If you want to hear Bach played beautifully on the grand piano, listen to Glenn Gould’s recordings.
What magnificent voicing and tonal control. We lost a potentially great Bach player And what a change in his appearance from the almost 'pretty - boy' look he had in his youth to the masculine bearded bear he became!
This is the only piece I have heard Lupu play in which I feel 100% disappointment. I attribute this mushy, indistinct, weirdly “Romantic” style of playing to his teacher(s) and the time in which he played it. Glenn Gould revealed to the world and to eternity, and at about the same time, how Bach’s music should be played on the enormous, plodding resonator, the grand piano, which renders music from the Baroque great bowls of mush. Bach is always precise, the counterpoint is rich, complicated, and must be played with utterly clarity, or there is simply no point in playing it at all.
Огромное Вам спасибо за возможность услышать ТАКОГО Баха! Гениальный , Великий Музыкант.
I love this-singing out to the stars above. Eternal beauty

il massimo dell'armonia, della melodia e del contrappunto fusi insieme !!!
