    At 14:23 when the Kid was after those who Killed Tunstle, I'd say Billy the Kid was right on the money, and those that he killed got what they deserved...Murfy and Dolan were the real criminals... and those kind of people(The Murfy kind) still exist today...And they called Billy the kid an outlaw???

    If that is an actual Billy the Kid letter, take note of the penmanship, grammar, and vocabulary he displayed. What does it say that a guy who probably had no formal schooling past the seventh grade, if that, could be so much more capable than anyone his age over 140 years later? It's a damnation of our current degraded schools and curriculum....

      Billy's letters were sent form jail. He dictated them to at least two different people. These were usually educated individuals with good penmanship. They could have been either paid or volunteers. The only person who knew about all the letters in the 1950's was William Henry Roberts.

    Billy The Kid was not evil, or a desperado. He was a survivor that was put into bad situations by his own decisions, but he was no a killer. He did kill, but he hilled corrupt lawless men, that were more criminal than he, and the people that went after Billy The Kid should have been arrested themselves. Billy The Kid was a hero, not a criminal.

      @ Sarah D it is amazing how well written the people in the 1800`s who received an education were. If you read,or listen to letters from Civil War vets, even privates,wrote so eloquently and expressed themselves so well with the pen, it puts modern H.S. grads to shame. They also were taught the classics ,i.e. the Greek Mythologies, and more. You might know of Civil war historian, Shelby Foote, who wrote a 3 part ,all encompassing narrative of the War , from dispatches to letters ,General`s histories and military campaigns . He is THE go to man on anything Civil war related. Ken Burns` PBS documentary series is full of Foote`s imput and to hear him speak ,is mesmerizing. He passed away about 10 yrs. ago, and there will never be one more well versed on the subject. I highly reccomend watching the series. I have it on DVD. Good luck, and take care.

    Billy never claimed to be part of the James Gang. He did state that he knew the Dalton gang, but never claimed to be a part of that gang but rather that they knew each other. This should come as no surprise since cattle rustling was the black market of the 1800's and most of them had connections with other outlaws. They helped each other keep under the radar of the law and most of them were friends.

    The facts about Billy the Kid were not known. You're looking at this through your 2013 eye glasses. Doing research about something, prior to 1950, took great hours of research in libraries. You couldn't just go to a website to find newspaper articles. To find info about Billy you would have to go to Lincoln County Library and dig for evidence. Also, most of the books about Billy, prior to 1980, were dime store novels that weren't worth the paper they were written on.

    The ending in this short Bio is where things get very interesting because in the 1950's a very old man with his horse ,dressed up in full cowboy gear ,piston and rifle claimed he was Billy the Kid and that Pat Garrett had only faked his death,because Pat Garrett was a once a good friend of Billy the Kid and had rode with the kid once in the very beginning.His name was now Brushy Bill so as not to be recognized as the Notorious Billy the Kid famous outlaw of 1870's ,he was never pardoned since the court never acknowledged him as the famous outlaw Billy the Kid of Lincoln county and he was told to go home. Brushy Bill with piercing blue eyes died a short time later but i believe Bill the Kid was in fact saved by Pat Garrett ,i also believe that even if Brushy Bill could use DNA and prove he was Billy The Kid they never would have accepted the truth since that would have mean that they meaning the law were made a fool of and were punked by Billy the Kid once again,in other words it would have meant that Billy the Kid fought the law and he won! here is where i will let the song play out .......i wake up in the morning and i raise my weary head .....i got old coat for a pillow and the earth was last night's bed.....i don't where i am going and only god knows where i been....i am Devil on the run .....a six gun lover, a candle in the wind.....i am going out in a blaze a glory!!

    I've read several accounts of the Kid's story, and this follows what is known of the historical record, with the possible exception of what Billy may have been armed with when he encountered Garrett for the last time. This is one version. The other version that may be as true as we'll ever know is what witnesses said; he had a knife and was originally just going to cut a chunk of meat from a cooked roast in the kitchen when he stopped at the bedroom to visit Maxwell. Billy had a lot of friends, including Maxwell and family, and they were very bitter toward Garrett, accusing him of murdering the kid in cold blood. Garrett had no choice since it was dark, unable to verify what he may have been armed with, and all he really did was carry out the court order for Billy's death. All accounts I'm familiar with show the Dolan / Murphy enterprise to be even more ruthless than Billy ever was.

    • @TheFarmerfitz
      @TheFarmerfitz 10 лет назад

      Murfy and Dolan were cold blooded killers...The Kid mostly killed out of self defence or revenge, or while trying to escape when he really shouldn't have been in jail anyway... Had that Crooked Judge kept his word and pardoned the Kid, he may have turned out different....but, can't change the past... I don't bow down to the Murfy and Dolan type people(and there are lots in todays world and no one calls them outlaws!)..., and if I were in the Kids shoes I might have done the same things...

    • @genekinnick2174
      @genekinnick2174 10 лет назад +1

      TheFarmerfitz .
      Agreed. When one reads the documents of the time and the eyewitness accounts, it's pretty obvious who the real criminals were in the Lincoln County war. Though Billy did make the effort to deal with governor Wallace, he ended up being betrayed by all of officialdom, as well his own simple logic. There was no way he and his friends and employer could effectively deal with the ring of corruption they found themselves surrounded by. The Murphy Dolan bunch controlled everything going on in the region, including the Army with which they had a contract, and they were in a much better position to control and maintain their grip than Tunstall and McSween and their small, powerless faction ever was. If Billy was guilty of anything, it was in believing his skill with a gun could prevail against all the corruption involved. A lot of people are not aware of it, and I don't know enough about it, but Billy once served with the Texas Rangers.
      I also am in agreement we still have the same kinds of corruption today. It boggles the mind that this kind of lawlessness just won't die.

When historians did the research they found that Roberts was indeed telling the truth about what the courthouse looked like in the 1880's, something that no one could have known. He also talked about people that helped him and when those people's kids were interviewed in the 1950's, they admitted that Roberts

He even showed the scar of the bullet wound from Sheriff Brady's gun, including many other bullet wounds from other gun fights. University researchers even did facial recognitions between Roberts and Billy and said that the resemblance is amazing. Roberts, unable to read, talked in great detail about what transpired in Lincoln County, some thing he said were not even known by historians.

My great grandfather -who's word was his bond - has always told that when the Kid escaped from Lincoln, he went to the Baca family for help, which he got because he was well loved by Hispanics in Lincoln County. When he left the Baca's, he headed to Ft. Sumner because he had a girlfriend there, (who later had his baby). There, he WAS ambushed and killed by Pat Garrett, who was a lawless killer from way back.
