"Have Mercy" - Eryn Allen Kane | Ian Eastwood & The Young Lions

- where do i even begin with this piece that i hold so close to my heart...
first thing you should know is that i found this heart-stoppingly talented singer songwriter Eryn Allen Kane's music going back to early 2015 amidst listening to many rising stars out of chicago but there was something very different about this song bird and her message. i had this record "Have Mercy" on my playlist to choreograph to for the entire year of 2015, but didn’t think i would do it justice. it took me the rest of the year to find my inspiration and i finally choreographed it in decmeber of 2015. after only teaching it two times and shelving it until the time was right, in the fall of 2016 we got the call from NBC asking us to do the show. we needed to turn in a video submission of two pieces. so i thought to myself, who am i? what defines me? and i thought… out of everything i had choreographed over the last full year, this piece represented me as somebody with something to say with their art.
we shot this submission in all red, inspired by Kane’s album cover. (listen to her full project and view the album cover [photo by : bryan allen lamb] here: open.spotify.c...) in november. waited to hear back about the show…and before we knew it we had gone through two rounds on national television. the cuts were happening fast. amazing talent was going home round 2 and we needed to say something that mattered or we probably wouldn’t have much more to say on this platform. we pushed, and we pushed hard to go with something different this week. we grew closer as friends and family, pushed our boundries, and completely tore apart and restructured a piece from the ground up as a team, from something that had started almost two full years prior. this is the hardest i’ve ever worked on a piece as well as my team. its unfortunate that TV didn’t portray a lot of the beautiful staging and detail we put into the final piece, and its unfortunate that even this video doesn’t reflect the final product since it was shot 5 months prior, but hopefully at some point we get a full HD copy of the full piece with the right angles.
anyway, what we hope this piece means to people and what we said on stage after our performance is that we made this piece with the hopes of inspiring people to do the best they can. that’s what this record means to me. there are so many people around the world suffering through hard lives everyday, and it would be unrealistic to think we can heal and help take away the burden from all those people. but what we can do as humans to be the most effective in helping people is to reach our fullest potential. if you are a prophet speak out, if you are a choreographer put your work out for the world, if you are a musician make music so people can feel what you feel, if you are a film maker capture the world so people can see it through your eyes. if we push ourselves past our expectations we can confidently say my personal favorite line in the record “we tried…”. the world can be dark but with the desire to push through it we can begin to shed some light and thats all we can ask for… hope.

One of the best parts of an Ian eastwood video is not the video itself but the description because I always love hearing how a piece came about. Also what it means to you and all the work everyone put in. More people should take the time to actually read it.

I love this song so much because of this. This preformance was so powerful it seemed weightless, floating above our heads where no one can reach. You can't touch this. ❤❤❤

honestly the WOD judges slept on this performance. it was full of beautiful movement and raw emotion and i love getting to see the longer routine. the dancing only brought more meaning to the song for me, y'all deserved better.
My aunt laughs at me for how much I smile when I watch you dance. You have such a uniquely different style that beautifully captures the meaning of the song. And it reminds me of why I wanted to dance in the first place. I'm sad you didn't win WOD but you've inspired me so much over the last few years and I think that's winning enough. This video just told me everything that I've been dealing with the past two months. I have been struggling and dealing with many different situations and thoughts in my mind almost everyday, without a chance to breathe. I didn't feel like I amounted to anything. My passions, my work, my ideas and what I want to bring to the world. It was not easy to get by, and seeing the description and watching this routine completely tells me that it's all possible. No idea is forgotten, and nothing is ever just left alone. It seems to find their way back into our lives.

while watching this video all i could think of was 'if this song has to be put into movements this is exactly what it should be'. i can't really explain the feeling i got from it. Every video from you i'm amazed by the talent and the feeling that goes into the choreography. But this one hit me even more than usual. The way you danced/choreographed to this song is amazing. There are no right words for it. I've been watching/following you for years now and you made me love dance so much. You dance with so much feeling and you make a song come to live, i think thats the right way to put it. I don't dance myself, but you have made me see how amazing it is and i can't wait to see whats next.

I really enjoyed watching you and your crew dance on NBC's WOD, but I didn't agree with Jennifer's words at that last cut about your choreography having to change. I think what I like best about your work is the simplicity of the emotional exchange between you and the other guys. Each movement is attached to the dynamics of the song and each movement sings with emotion. Keep doing what you're doing Ian.
