    Thanks so much for this great tutorial Judy! I'm getting ready (finally) to start your gorgeous Vintage Rose quilt and your tutorial really helped reinforce the templates, folding, cutting, etc. since it's been a while since my last paper pieced project.

    Thanks so much. I wish I had known about this methodology of fabric stacking etc before attempting the glacier star and all those flying geese.

    The method that you use (rectangle), is useful for making HST's or Peaky and Spike. Compute the rectangle for two together. Cut the rectangles, and then simply align the ruler once to make manifold cuts. Saves so much ruler rotation and realignment. Once you calculate the rectangle, make a note of the size on the template.

    Nice tutorial. Learned alot - my one comment this is not for a left handed sewer which is what I am.

      Penny Hulse our patterns are definitely easier to use for right handed sewists. However, many left handed sewists simply flip the templates 180 degrees and adjust the cut lines. We had to pick one direction to work. And, while some templates don't matter, you will have to adapt some for more comfortable cutting.

      Thought that may be possible (right handers sew clockwise and us lefties are counter clockwise.) Taking my first class on March 31 and will keep that in mind.

      I am attempting my first paper piecing project and I too am left handed. Can you tell me how it differs? Help

    This method of folding the strips in half and cutting the templates only works for batik fabric, correct? If you use this method with other fabric choices that have a right and wrong side, half of the pieces will be backwards results from the fabric being folded in half.

    • @Quiltworxcom
      @Quiltworxcom  5 лет назад

      It actually depends on the pattern. This video is older. Now, we tell you whether it should be all right side up or folded in half, or wrong side up.

    Other than cutting edges what did she?

  • @mariannes5309

    When you fold your fabric strips in half, and then lay your paper template on top for cutting, some of your pieces will be cut with fabric right side up and some with fabric wrong side up. Does that matter? Thx.

      Marianne S hi Marianne, you will need to read the instructions for each pattern. Some state that you fold the fabric in half so you get a right and left side. Some say to lay the entire strip out, and cut them directionally. Our new patterns all say to lay the strip out... And we provide both right and left templates. So, it does matter, but it's pattern dependent and the instructions explain that.

      I was thinking the exact same thing. Thank you for asking and thank you to Quiltworx for the very helpful response.

    Is there a part two of this? It seems unfinished?

    • @Quiltworxcom
      @Quiltworxcom  10 лет назад

      There isn't a part 2 for this section. There were other video segments regarding other topics, but we didn't share them all here. Plus, these videos were part of a series that Judy was considering taping at one point to put out a DVD and she wasn't in love with the quality. The content was good, but quality wasn't what she wanted it to be, so...we decided to share the videos as free content, in segments. So far, we've only shared 2. Good content, but not something we would ask someone to pay for in terms of quality. If that makes sense?

      ....I feel like I just jumped off a cliff & I'm suspended in mid air... 😒 I'm beginning to think I need to sell my Niemeyer kits. I'm an excellent & skilled traditional piecer, but I'm not sure I can fully grasp this paper thing. The last Niemeyer kit I got sent a note inside saying they didn't send the stated pattern requirements in fabric but they reviewed the amount sent & it was deemed sufficient for the pattern! Huh? Watching these videos & knowing that you utilize the excess that you do, I'm afraid to cut into the fabric now & not have enough! Why would somebody do that? I paid for a complete kit! I would send it back and go with another shop but I don't have the $70+ more to pay for it. As it is, I've waited 3 months to get this kit (Prismatic Star). That part isn't your fault I guess but I'm not impressed with this VERY well-known woman who has been televised for over 30 years & sells all kinds of quilting kits and sewing notions. Sorry. I am enamored with your work but I'm afraid of it, lol. Especially when I know there's room for error but not enough fabric to compensate for mistakes. -My problem is that I'm a bit of a perfectionist and I need to know what I'm doing before I cut into this gorgeous kit. So here I am after jumping off the cliff. Hanging.... ?

      Beach Lizard Hi Beach! Sorry you are struggling. Have you considered taking a workshop? If you cannot do so in person, we have one being released in just a little over a week with Certified Instructor, Jackie Kunkel on Craftsy, as well. We also have a Quiltworx Support Network on Facebook that provides a tremendous amount of support from those that are doing the projects. The best way to get help there is to ask a specific question about a specific pattern and someone that has made it will help you out. In regards to Kits, we do not sell fabrics and as a result, kitting is left to shop owners and companies that do. They may choose to follow the pattern or not and, the support they provide varies by company. I would highly encourage you to contact the shop where the kit was purchased and simply let them know you don't understand what they mean so they can walk you through it. Many of our patterns use over 20 fabrics. They are designed to take formerly impossible blocks to piece and make them doable. And, sometimes, people need workshops to get them off on the right foot. Our RUclips channel is not intended to serve this purpose, but simply to be a place where we can share videos that we think might help someone with specific steps in the process. I believe that what you bought is a complete kit...they just did not choose the fabrics exactly like we did on the pattern. Did they give you a picture? I would simply give them a call to help you resolve this confusion. I'm sure as a shop, they will be more than happy to help you out. Also...on the Prismatic star, I would suggest you read the pattern a few times before cutting anything and then work step by step. If you are afraid to start, then the best way is to only go one step at a time. All you need, is 48 2-1/2" strips, the 1-1/8 Yard for the sashing, and 2 Yards for the background. If you have that amount of fabric, you are ready. And, you don't cut the strips. You simply sew them. You have templates for the background and the sashing strips (black). When you lay them on the fabric, right-side-up, they cut perfectly. Cut out all the foundation papers and templates and organize them by bag before you get started, then reference the back of the pattern for which strips to sew to which sections on the strip piecing foundation papers. You cut them apart on the solid lines AFTER you've sewn the strips, then re-organize them and sew them back together. I hope that helps!
