- Folk musician and family man, singer/songwriter John Gorka utilizes a rare knack for storytelling to envelope listeners, transporting them to new realities through vivid attention to place and time. Gorka was gifted his first guitar at the age of ten, only to have it pirated away by his older brother, forever cementing his drive to write his own music and take refuge in his songs. Born in New Jersey and married into Minnesota home life for 20 years, he proudly attests that his career and family life make the other possible. Gorka is a nationally recognized folk competition winner and scene-stealer, having written some of the most preeminent music of the New Folk Movement. To him, folk is about more than entertainment. To Gorka, folk songs serve a much deeper purpose to enrich and redefine public discourse and personal growth.

Why this guy is so under the radar baffles me. He is an incredible songwriter. I've heard him live 3 times, and was always very impressed.
I agree. He’s very underrated.
he is worth seeing in person - love his dry humor and gentle spirit. beautiful voice!
John Gorka is a real as it gets. He is a singer songwriter who is deep and accessible with a voice cool and crisp as an autumn morning. If you have never heard John sing his songs live you a missing out on the type of experience that has you saying to yourself "where the hell have I been?" Go see him live and if that won't do, buy all his music and bath your brain in something powerful and subtle at the same time.
+Kevin McGuffin - Right on target Kevin!!
Kevin McGuffin as
I just saw him live last night. He was opening for another folk singer. I was in the 9th row. Awesome!
You rule, John Gorka.
Ahhhh! So glad this is on youtube. Saw him a few times many years ago. This is my favorite of his songs. Really nicely performed here. I have a close friend who once told me this song basically told the story of her father. I knew the man, and it pretty much did. He's gone now. His memory is not. Thank you John for keeping it real.
One of the GREAT ones of the New Folk Movement! Lyrics:
So I wonder how she's doing
I hate it when the rumors fly
They give off such a strange sense of mission
Wing your helplessness on high
But she would never run from strangers
She sang alone like a bell will toll
Way above the clang and the clatter
Out of fear of her demon soul
Maybe none of this is my business
And none of what I hear is true
I am far from the mint condition
Circulation's hard on you
Chorus:
Love's not enough
To keep you off that stuff
To save you...(2X)...to save you now
He could always find the holes in the bottles
Even with a blindfold on
Never kept his seat on the wagon
Rolling off like a rolling stone
Blue chalk between his fingers
Hustling a poolroom song
He always kept a line for the singer
Pointing his cue right from wrong
Chorus
"Hold tight, hang tough" to everyone! ❤️
solid gold. this is how all music videos should be: close, intimate, shorn of BS special effects and crowd noises. oh, and featuring a brilliant inspired artist too. wonderful signature gorka song, spilling over with passion and insight ... and a tune that is very
well covered by maura o'connell.
Rolling Off like a Rolling Stone!!
The first time I heard this was not John's version, but rather that of Irish singer Maura O'Connell, and dobro master Jerry Douglas was also on that recording. I came to understand that it was John's song and have several of his albums to date. Years later I saw John, along with Lucy Kaplansky and Eliza Gilkyson at the Mauch Chunk theater in Jim Thorpe PA, when I lived in Wilkes Barre PA. It was a really interesting show, as they are performed each others songs. It was very cool to hear different treatments of the original artists songs performed by friends of theirs.
Always great performance by this artist, but today, my bravo to the film/sound guys. wow. Great editing too. - You guys really rock.
We all know someone...
Like one of the best songs ever.
Magnificent!
One of the very best!
You have a fan far away in Singapore. Great talent! Mesmerizing with just voice and guitar. Nothing fanciful. Just great story-telling! My fave album "Between Five and Seven". Please come to Singapore.
I saw this lovely man in Oregon at Lang Estate on top of a hill in the moonlight. I've been a fan of his since the early 90's. Love him in concert, love his music.
what a great, soulful and sincere performer!
Please come to Singapore :)

stingray folk roots brough me here...
i don t understand, how come i never heard about mr Gorka before?
New Mexico would welcome you to do a performance at Anazasi Vineyards. Its a small venue north of Albuquerque.
Great John! Thanks for sharing your talents.
Yes great message,great sound John
Piękne, proste, klarowne wykonanie w mistrzowskim stylu. W tym purytańskim wykonaniu słyszymy Jasia i jego dźwięczną gitarę. I to jest piękne! Czyste i niewinne bez elektronicznego blichtru. Nawiasem mówiąc Jasiu Górka mógłby zaśpiewać raz coś po polsku. 🧐
Love this song.
Saw your cover , great job👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

@@bamgrok I'd love to, but I haven't played this song in 8 or 10 years, so I don't remember the chords. I'd need to work the song out again. Sorry about that. I'd like to learn it again though. If I do work the chords out again, I'll let you know.
Excellent. Love your guitar work too.
