How to use Alclads for a weathered aluminum finish on your aircraft model

  • Using Alclad lacquers can make your NMF (natural metal finish) aircraft shine, but what about a weathered, worn, oxidized look?
    This is an experiment on Revell's ancient SR-71, using 3 different primers and 7 different shades of Alclad Aluminium....
    Hope it helps!

    Nice to see Alcads haven't completely died out and great to see Doogs experiments have created some interest. Thanks for putting that comprehensive test together Chris, I have the B-58 Hustler planned in the near future and with Alcads on my shelf this was the perfect test.

    G'day Chris, Outstanding 'paint science' video. Just working my way through your old videos and it's amazing what you got up to. Yours is a simple yet very logical way of searching for the right finish for a particular model build. And, as you discovered, with almost every experiment, one learns something that was totally unexpected. This is going into my all metal aircraft research file, if you don't mind. It's bonza. Well done. Hope you and the family have a great 2022! Happy New Year! Cheers, Bill H.

      @@beckersmodels G'day, Chris, That would be particularly interesting for me as I've just stocked up on AK Extreme metal paints. I'm going to do a series of large WW2 bombers, like the B-17, B-29 and and a couple the big Cold War Russian bombers, all mostly in bare metal. I agree with you about the advantages of a black base, however, seeing your results from the other method, I'll give that a go as well, just to see what finishes I can get. I really like the 'silver' US bomber liveries as they highlighted most of them with striking, bright solid colours that really pop out against the metal. There are some spectacular liveries for Liberator 'Lead Bombers' that I want to tackle as well.
      I like your approach of experiments in various finishes. I get a little bored with doing the same paint schemes as everyone else does. A few years back I did an exact replica of the brand new Liberator that was a 'gift' from Douglas MacArthur to General Thomas Blamey. It had no markings on it at all apart from the RAAF roundels and a tiny A- number hidden under the tail. Blamey also had an all metal C-60 Lodestar which I did after I had a fascinating meeting with Blamey's personal pilot, who is still with us, living in WA. He loaned me all his log books to copy; it was very valuable for our Blamey documentary project.
      Anyway, I'm enjoying going through your videos and picking up some of your tips along the way. Cheers, mate and all the best. Glad to see 2021 is finally over. Bill

    Appreciate this was from years ago and not what it was originally designed to test, though, which combination do you think would work best for the Razor Crest?
    It's very reflective on places, but also beat up and heavily weathered/pitted in other places

    • @beckersmodels
      @beckersmodels  2 года назад +1

      Thats a very good question and one I will try to resolve once I get back to my Razor Crest - I will be using a similar technique here, maybe not Alclads all over, using MRP or SMS paints as I prefer their controllability, but I will update this once Ive done some experiments...cheers Chris

    I would love to see you do the same exact video, using non Alclad paint. Perhaps even AK Extreme Metals. These are not laquer, and have the same color spectrum. Alclads are SO FUSSY. Or Mr. Color range.

    • @beckersmodels

      well there is 3% aluminium in the titanium alloy used in the SR-71, so maybe a thumbnail is relevant to your comment, being so small and insignificant? Cheers, Chris

      Been building a 1/48 Testors YF-12 which I’m going to paint in the original 1963 Area-51 “livery” which was unpainted, except for the black leading and trailing edges of the wings and chines. So that thumbnail (an A-12) is actually what caught my eye. I think the key for titanium will be a Matt black primer, it instead of “marbled” undershading, it will be more feathered, and faded using a mix of metallics and matte/gloss. I saw a P-38 build on Primed Model Works where Sean dusted a coat of chrome (after marbling Matt grey over gloss black) before doing the final top coat of airframe aluminum. This helped blend the finish difference between the matte and gloss in the final finish. I think that technique, using a dusting of ti gold in place of chrome will give it the warm titanium look I’m after.
