- In this video i show how to disassemble the top half of the Bosch VE injection pump found on our first gen dodge Cummins diesels.
I then install the "366" governor spring and an aftermarket fuel pin.
Loved your video! Love the explanations on how it works as well as the best ways to remove parts. The camera quality is also amazing! Thank you
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed.
Thanks for the video sir I'm restoring my father's old diesel truck definitely using this video.
Well illustrated and great quality video footage.
+Nicholas Janak Thank you!
I hate seeing a dirty work area, all that crap going into the pump internals. It's a very easy/dumb way to mess up your pump. Always clean your work area before disassembly, it makes things much easier to work with, see, and prevent unnecessary damage. It's as they say... "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".
Wa#ker
That smacking wtf
your my favorite videos on this pump!
I appreciate your videos
good vid, only thing missed was to mention that you need to back your full power screw out prior to reinstalling the top or else you'll break your lever inside.
yes, i missed that because i did not do it. I didn't know why you were supposed to back it out, so i didn't. No harm though. if you carefully re attach your cover and make sure it isn't hung up on anything, you'll be fine. If you do break it though, you'll be taking off the IP!
@@themadmailler and this is why i read, the comments. Go team!
?
hmm, never realized your fist downhill dodge engine looked so clean! you cleaned it? decent room to work too - except for backing out that last screw, for which you bent that wrench to remove it..nice.
nope, never cleaned it. everything was always a little wet with oil but there was never any build up.
Thanks for the video, well done and helpful
Thanks for the video way better than the others 😏
Mudmowerguy glad you liked it! thanks!
Thanks for the info, it's priceless for us do it ourselves kind of people. :)
Yes nice camera! Not sure what is wrong with mine, it idols very low and dies alot and tell it warms up then it's fine. I have to hold my foot on the throttle for 15 minutes to warm up?
Hi, I know this video is a couple years old now, but did you notice a good difference in power? Just bought a beater 91 12v and its bone stock with what feels like no power lol
Excellent job
Where is your reinstall on top housing? Did you remove speed screw to get top on ?
When changing the governor spring the gasket must be replaced between upper and lower housing? Do you have a recommended supplier for that? Thank you.
@@EugeneSantos-o9k it's rubber, I re used mine.
thank you for this great video! But I have one question. How do you remove the fuel supply line crossing over the top of the tps? Do I hold the top nut with a wrench while turning the bottom with another wrench? Thank you!
Thanks! glad you enjoyed it. I don't know what you mean by "tps", but i assume you're talking about the one on top of the injection pump. It's like a larger brake line fitting. keep the bottom fitting (closer to the pump) stationary and turn the top one. be careful, the nut may be rusted onto the line and want to turn the line with it.
themadmailler themadmailler sorry, I mispoke. I meant the throttle lever. But yes, that's the correct fuel line. I'm not entirely sure but I think it's the opposite of what you describe. Turning the top wants to turn the whole line, and there isn't any rust. The bottom fitting appears to turn but not easily.
There is probably rust in between the nut and line - it doesn't take much to stiffen it up. use oil and a torch to try to loosen it up, and work it back and forth a little at a time. the bottom fitting doesn't turn easily because it's still attached to the top, which does not want to spin. be careful with it, but you'll get it.
if you screw in the smoke screw, you would probably get quicker spoolup
+Matt Leonard if the pump delivers too much fuel at zero boost, you'll get smoke and lag. Every motor is a little different however, and your location and altitude make a difference too. This really is just a guide, and also a record of what i chose to do to my motor. Adjust as you see fit!
smoke down low spins the exhaust wheel and spools the turbo quicker
a buried smoke screw, and buried star wheel will cause you to flood out your turbo. too much fuel too fast. it will just be a laggy, hot, smokey mess.
Thank you John. We need less misinformation about tuning diesels, so much "roll coal because it's awesome and means it makes power" misinformation is ruining the reputation of diesel owners and drivers.
+John casteel That sounds so kinkey!
I have a 93 5.9 Cummins with the VE rotary like you have in your video. I can start right up and when I push on the gas pedal it barely ribs up at all and flatlands out at about 1200 rpm’s. What could be us being? And just so you know it’s getting 10 pounds of fuel pressure and I put a new fuel filter on it. Getting fuel is not a problem
hmm... tough one. how is the throttle cable? try revving it with the throttle lever on the pump.
You need to check your fuel lever to the shaft marks. sounds as though it is off one mark.
Did you have a problem starting the truck after install? Did you have to bleed the lines?
not for the fuel pin, but I can't remember for the gov spring. I don't think so.
Was that a washer that fell around 3.16 or 3.15? At least you didn't bend an American wrench:))
you mean around 3:24, when i was touching the banjo fitting on the boost reference line? good eye! i think that must have been a flake of paint, because i safely recovered the two copper washers on the banjo bolt when i removed it from the AFC top.
I got a laugh at your wrench comment! Metric wrenches are always good candidates for modification... but sometimes it has to be done on an american wrench too. that's why you can never have too many duplicate wrenches. thanks for watching!
LOL, bend an American wrench.
Nice job!
Very informative for enewbs like myself.
How is the best way to take up slack on the throttle cable after you do pump adjustment?
Having problems with that stud thats closest to the engine head. Bent a wrench and got it part way out but then the nut on it decided to come loose. Cant fit any screw driver in that small area to unscrew it to get it out of the way for removing that last bolt
which bolt? AFC top or pump housing top?
@themadmailler I NEED SOME HELP I did some VE pump seals were the governor spring is on the top of the cover and the seal in the throttle because it w was leaking i put it all back together and now it barely idles and has no throttle response at all do you know what I did wrong I need some help.
perhaps the top hat/gov spring assembly came apart when you had the top cover off?
Why should the spring also be replaced? Can't you just replace the fuel pin?
Gov spring controls max engine rpm.
@@themadmailler So it's no problem to just replace the fuel pin, and not the spring
@@R.Hekman yes.
So why were you doing all of this in the first place?
more power!
love your videos, keep it up !
+Robert Foglesong Thanks bud!
Did I miss the star wheel adjustment?
I assume i mentioned it in this video, but if i didn't, i have a playlist of dodge cummins modification and repair videos that mention pump tuning. Thanks for watching!
I did this mod and I cant get my idle down, at first I thought it was a run away, I indexed the throttle on the second line, I have backed the idle screw all the way out and it still idles way high.
Did you see this part of the video? maybe your markings are off? ruclips.net/video/85eb9Uz2Ue0/видео.html
It's the Idle screw under the diaphragm, closest to the engine. You have to back it out to get the top to set on right and then screw it back in.
@@kenuber4766 Thanks ken, I figured it out a while ago. Its been running great. Noticeable amount of power increase. I just need to ditch that 3spd auto and get a NV4500 swaped in. Its runs out of gears. The engine is just screaming to get to 60, which is barely able to keep up with traffic.
I got some bigger tires and that helped my highway rpm
?
A you should get your truck on top dead center where the single dot of the cam lines up with the double dots on the fuel pump gear take the nut off the gear and rotate it one tooth counter clock wise just one tooth no more and advance your pump all the way to the motor
What camera do you use?
Canon Vixia HFR600
themadmailler thanks!
Do i have to take the fuel pin out to install the governor spring
You have to remove the top of the injection pump as shown in the video.
@@themadmailler yes but do you remove the power screw when putting the top back on. I have heard of using a wire to pullback on "the foot" and removing the wire as the foot clears the power screw. What are your thoughts ?
@@ebeegeebeefofeebee3181 All I remember is that I didn't need to use a wire or anything. It's been quite a while since i've done this!
What does a different governer Spring on a desial engine do
+The Modern Maker allows the motor to rev higher, giving it a longer power ban
And also makes those valves float too.

HI I need help my isuzu kb250d is idling over 1500 wat can i do
+Sunil Ramdaw turn down the idle speed stop screw.
+themadmailler Hi i tried to turn down the idle speed stop screw but it just idle for a while and the it goes back to 1500.
You got me. I know nothing about isuzu diesels.
I moved the throttle limiter screw way back.
Easier to take pump off and work on bench
This was a very easy job, but to each their own.
Why my truck Dodge Ram I generation spend lot of diesel
I wanted to watch your video but you lip smacking was driving me nuts...
Yes.
I bet you would bitch if you saw a billboard sign if it doesn't have any letters on it ! LOL
I wanted to read your reply but your ignorant attitude to another fellow human being drove me nuts...
Lip smacking? Maybe you were thinking of something the rest of us wasn't.
I tried that, no difference
Hey I took my fuel pin out and tryed to put it back in but didn't want to go all the way in
make sure the slide pin isn't stuck and preventing the fuel pin from going back in.
?
I've watched this guy a couple times. The constant sniffing and smacking drives me crazy!!!!
haha, i've gotten so many complaints now i'm aware of it and edit it all out!

Okay, so a hell of a lot of people making these videos do this so don't feel bad but sucking your teeth. That constant sucking sound you're making is really damn annoying.
Obnoxious mouth noises of various types...geeez!
I tried that, no difference
