Yeah, Selmer... The guys there REALLY know what they're doing, but big kudos to Royal Global. Hearing just the excerpt I find that the Polaris was slightly better than the Firebird in terms of projection and resonance, both sounding almost as good as the Presence. But I would really love to have this beautiful throat Bb without adding resonance fingers, so it's a real thing to consider. In terms of cost vs. benefit, Polaris and Firebird may be the best choices.
LOL! I have several students who are using grandma’s clarinet that they pulled out of a closet! It’s a strangely common thing amongst young clarinet players haha.
All of the Polaris line sounded progressively better with the greatest change from 1 to 2. The Firebird #3 (w/great intonation) came the closet to matching the Selmer, but seemed the warmest of all. Thank you for that great clarinet demo or the Royal Global line.
I think the copper gives better mechanical resistance to the alloy, making the posts last longer and requiring less maintenance. I'm skeptical that a slightly larger percentage of copper in the posts make a perceptible difference in the sound. In the end, the firebird is a terrific horn!
The first Royal sounded the most even but didn’t have the depth or colour options as the other two. Firebird sounded good. Loved the evenness & overtones ! However, the Selmer had the depth of sound & sonority that a lot like. 🤷🏽♂️
That firebird looks like my Herbert Wurlitzer reform boehm clarinets (german bore clarinet with french fingering system). Is that firebird based on reform boehm models?
I know it's not a direct copy, but I know that the designers at Royal took a lot of influences from a lot of places! The G vent does look a lot like the Wurlitzers!
These are Chinese made instruments, but at a higher level of manufacturing than usual. They are distributed under the Royal Global name. So what exactly goes in the design, it hard to say, because (as it is often case with Chinese made products that pop out of nowhere and have no previous legacy) they may xerox any professional level Buffet, Selmer, Yamaha, Wurlitzer, etc., pay no royalties or references, slap a slightly lower price, and sell.

Grandma’s closet clarinet is kicking the bucket. I love it! Great channel and content.

Learning about the instrument. Your channel’s a great resource.
I’m so glad you are enjoying it!!!

Thank you! The Royals are fabulous horns, but I do love my Selmers.

All the Royals, the cheapest included, projects better than the Selmer...and for the price...
