Preps? Wow it would be a dream to have a protected and respected prep time to have meaningful collaboration.
We want students and teachers to be performing their best at school. Why do we want to complicate learning with extra noise and paranoia that anyone could walk in at any time? There is a significant difference between closing doors during downtime and during instruction periods. External noise can be a problem for students and teachers alike regarding focusing on tasks at hand. Collaboration is good, and I agree with the video that teachers should help each other out. Open doors can work in theory for teachers that support the philosophy, but I have my doubts. I believe that open doors are more a personal preference, and I think that a school's success results from other contributing factors, not their open-door policy. There are plenty of alternatives for collaboration. Two activities that come to my mind are spending planning periods together or grabbing a meal outside of school as friends. Building strong adult relationships is hard, but maintaining frequent contact can encourage colleagues to want to collaborate in the first place.
