Before my wife passed away, I always used to sing this song to her. We were married 35 years. Tears with every word now when I sing it at her grave.
Ten years ago I met the most amazing man on Elton John's website forum (now defunct). He lived in England and me in the USA. We sent tens of thousands of emails to each other over three years, and spent hundreds of hours on the phone. Finally, we met. Ten months later Nick proposed to me during this song, 'The One' during Elton's concert in Scarborough, UK. We were married four months later in England and I moved there permanently. In October we will celebrate our 6th anniversary. In two weeks we are seeing Elton in Leeds, for my 50th birthday!

I thought I did. We seen Elton maybe 5 /10 years ago and during this song I reached over and held my wifes hand. She was surprised. I don't know why I have been known to be romantic but with next week our 42 anniversary she left almost a year ago without notice, with no contact. I tried to kiss her in our front yard as she was leaving to go be with someone else and I knew it was over.

Sebastian Georgieff You're right, it was big when it came out and I remember hearing it a lot on my mom's adult contemporary radio station as a little kid, but after his Lion King songs came out in '94 it seemed to be forgotten and you never hear it on the radio anymore, so I guess that's why I said it's underrated.

There are some songs out there that a real true masterpieces. This is one of them. The piano solo at the last minute or so of this song is nothing short of outstanding! Absolutely Brilliant!

A little over 4 months ago, I lost my partner Carl of 21+ years. When I listen to this song it reminds me of my dear Carl. The lyrics "When stars collide like you and I - No shadows block the sun - You're all I've ever needed - Baby you're the one" hit home with my heart. I have had my heart broken before, but never like this in living without him. He was my world and my light.

This is a special elton john song for me because of the key change from C to Bflat. There's also an apparent chord change to Dflat around the "when stars collide..." part. Stunning musicality. I also love the theme of the song. Wants me want to want someone.

Elton John is of course a brilliant singer and musician and entertainer, an all time great. But I just want to personally thank Bernie Taupin for writing the lyrics of many of Elton's very best songs. "The One" is a true masterpiece of songwriting.

I used to listen and sing to a CD of Elton John when I was about 12 or so. Remember my mom and dad telling me to sing along this song cause they both loved it and I loved singing it for them. What great memories from childhood this brings to me. Thanks for your music Elton John.
