"Made the mistake of playing Freelancer in 2005"... and been looking for another like it ever since - The hearts cry of literally everyone I have ever known who loved Freelancer. Still play it to this day.
I played on Discovery Freelancer 24/7 RP server for a long while. RPing as the Kusari State Police was some of the most fun I've had in gaming. After Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen got announced the server slowly fell apart.
closest thing to freelancer is darkstar one and galaxy on fire 2. For mp, there are ton of freelancer mods, crossfire mod is crazy then you got the x series. The starpoint gemini games are good too but play the last game if you want a small ship. Elite dangerous is great too.
Right?!? Never played this game before but even I figured that out after the first miss. Then he jerks his cursor up on the second shot and the nuke follows it and Splat yells, "He launched chaff" No, no he didn't Splat. This man kills me sometimes.
I was about to post a comment to the same effect. Like, how did he not notice that the bright orange thing literally follows his cursor around -- especially after the second time?
Another Freelancer like game I played was: Darkstar One, loved it too :) your ship was kinda alive and you had to wander around the galaxy to find special artifacts that your ship would then absorb and evolve :)
No shit? I've been worried about it cause it felt like the only thing keeping it alive are the madlads over at the modding community. Glad it's getting some updates.
Yep - X3 / X4 are amazing. Different beasts than Freelancer, and they have pretty big learning curves, but I absolutely love them/ can't recommend them enough!
@@EvaShogouki01 I've enjoyed X4 since launch and it has improved quite a bit since then. It's gone from a C- to a B+, I'd say. It's not and never will be perfect, but it's a lot of fun, and it now has a lot more 'story' content that give you some drive / goals beyond what you make for yourself. My biggest complaints are that it needs improved in-sector AI (IE: if you stand on deck of an AI-piloted miner and watch them mine, they will do so very inefficiently. If you fly away / teleport to another sector they will start filling their cargo bay with minerals while you're OoS (out of sector)). I'd also like to see ship / component rebalancing (IE: Why use a Falx over a Katana?) EgoSoft also just released a free DLC / expansion for X3 last week that's going to have me going back to check out X3 again
The first Rebel Galaxy gets maybe 50-75% of Freelancer - you can mine, trade, do missions for money, etc, but it falls short (2D space - lacks depth in quite a few areas, etc.) Worth a look if you've never tried it. It was a budget game, so it's hard to expect a lot from it. I enjoyed the story of it, I think it has a wonderful aesthetic, and the soundtrack is awesome. Rebel Galaxy: Outlaw was really shallow compared to the original game. There only a handful of ships to fly, and you could only pilot fighters when we had been used to piloting capital ships. I had fun with it (for the ~10 hours of gameplay) but was also really disappointed (how short it was, the story, not many ships, etc.). Starpoint Gemini I think attempts to be its own thing - a capital spaceship / RPG. It has a lot in common with Freelancer, but also feels like it strays away quite a bit too. You can land on planets, trade, run missions for factions, etc. But it's also clunky and most things are not easy to grasp. The stories (in the ones I've played) are also very threadbare and just generic attempts to get you to do things. Keep in mind I love all of these games (with the exception of Rebel Galaxy Outlaw). Nothing really comes close to having the elegance and apparent simplicity of Freelancer (the game is by no means "simple" - I mean that most things are intuitive and easy to grasp). I'll keep hoping, but the way I see it, the only way you'll really scratch your Freelance itch is... by re-installing Freelancer. Which I'm doing right now.
@@davestall4026 It's quite barren when it goes to narrative since after tutorial it's "do what you will" the game and there isn't much exposition outside lore written about planets and stations, but yes, it's very good and has great atmosphere of somber scifi. It also has great modding community doesn't even cost much, it's just 15$.
This game looks great! I added to my wishlist and might pick it up. I wish the after battle looting was more immersive. Like you mark the ships you want to loot and scavenger crews detached to go search and collect while your main ship worked on repairs.
What splattercat forgot is when you at war and have problems with pirates keeping a whole sector becomes harder to maintain such is why they needed his help.
Missed this video until today. Been a bit since I played the game but prioritize the ships shooting at you first as they are in range. Guns are situated in mounts around your ship so outgoing fire varies depending on your ships orientation compared to your target.
I mean ships having a lot of resources on them makes sense. Unless they create a very big explosion all ships are just flying frigates of resources. The ship's parts themselves would be easily salvageable and quite valuable.
5 minutes in and splatty already prooves he is not an imposter by directing all nukes away from the targets and complaining about targeting on the nukes... in true Splattercat fashion. Dear lord.
Starfleet Command did the shield facings and power distribution on a similar gameplay plane. Fun game, too. I recall locking a tractor beam onto one of the big bad ships in a campaign mission and ramming it into an asteroid, lol.
Splat: Nooo I don't want to be at arms. My ship is tiny. Me, an intellectual: If you will not serve on the front lines you will serve on the Firing lines. NOW FIGHT FOR THE EMPEROR!!!!!
8:00 "I'm like like a loving, touching, squizing kinda captain..." That's a sexual harrasment prossecution waiting to be filed, Splat. Just don't... XD
If Freelancer got you hooked: be glad to be young so you didn't experience WC:Privateer when those graphics and story were still jawdropping. 'Lancer was 'nice', you luckily skipped the hard drugs.
I wish there was more (or at least more obvious) effects to indicate the speed of the ship. Like light trails, some particle effects, or a long "flame" from the engine. Having the ship turn transparent when mousing over it would help a lot with both flight and combat too. It felt like 50% of the ship combat was Splat trying to see around his own ship.
For some weird reason devs making capital ship games keep making the guns direct-player control. That's incredibly stupid. When you have tons of guns, a very slow ship, restrictive turret arcs and slow 6-axis maneuvering - guns need to be automated.
Splat: NNNNOOOOO!!! I don't wanna fight in this small little ship! Splat no more than 10 seconds later: I WILL STAB YOU IN THE SPLEEN WITH MY TINY SHIP!!!! :p
LMFAO! I basically have, in X4 Foundations, exactly what you said you'd have if you were incharge of running a big station like this. 150 ships patroling and on duty to protect my one, giant, everything in one spot build-it-all station.
I'm grabbing the demo to have a look, it does appear to have some Privateer/Freelancer vibes here. I have Elite Dangerous for my marginally more physics accurate space fix, been missing the Freelancer run and gun (admittedly mostly in non-RCS mode - makes combat more interesting when you go past backwards and sideways still shooting!) Definitely worth the time to view :)

I was about to post a comment to the same effect. Like, how did he not notice that the bright orange thing literally follows his cursor around -- especially after the second time?
It also says to "direct the nuke" which kind of implies it being player controlled, but could be clearer.
same for me
me: sees missile following mouse cursor
Splat: "must have launched chaff or something"
me: ...
Riker, "Tough little ship."
Worf, "Little?"
Splat loves playing Orc. Splat also concerned about his small ship looking like it is perpetual on fire.
But, those things almost goes hand in hand.

Freelancer never did it for me. I was ALL about that Descent: Freespace and Freespace II back in the day.

This kind of games usually just make me play them for a while and then just fire up StarSector for 20 hours straight again.

I was cringing each time the nuke was about to hit, and he would move his cursor at the last second! Lol.
Yeah bro you are right!
3:40 Actually the very first space sim game (to my knowledge) that gave you control over subsystems like that was Freespace 2.
This game could work well on console.
Also, the starting ship makes me think of the Prometheus from Stargate SG1.
"It's funny how much chaos can be caused by a bomb in the right spot", congratulations, you're on a watch list :P

Corvette, frigate, cruiser. "BIG SHIPS!"
Um, no, those are all little ships.
Hey now, cruisers are rightly medium-sized.
That's what you get for having a ship shaped like a rhombus!
