- United Nations - The legacy of slavery in the United States lives on today in South Carolina and Georgia. The Gullah Geechee peoples, descendants of African slaves, are facing a struggle to hold on to their land and culture.

The Gullah/Geechee are indigenous to the North America. They fought in the 7yr long war, called the Gullah Wars. But people rewrote the history called it the Indian Wars. They fought along side the Maroons, and Seminoles, snd other tribes. The Muskogee Confederate of the South, is who they was under before the reconstruction period of the South. The Gullahs and the Geechees are cousins, the Geechee word. Came from the Ogeechee River near Savannah, GA that flows into SC. Also the Fort Jackson Treaty allow Andrew Jackson to take their lands.

@Gee Giles, Our people didn't have to be from Africa, to be overtaken and enslaved here in the Americas. If you notice on census records, after slavery, the occupations of a lot of our people, were "farmers" "laborers" (Cleaned up word for slaves on plantations, in my opinion) Of course, this isn't the story for all, but for a lot. Otherwise we wouldn't have the names we do.

I realize that most so-called Afrikan Americans are indigenous to the Americas. But no so with the Gullah Geechee people they are truly Afrikans. As far as having "ancestral lands" in America, well how far back do their ancestors go back in this country? Their ancestral lands are in Sierra Leone where they came from.

I lived in the Lowcountry of South Carolina for years had Gullah friends takes a while to understand what they're saying to you. Some of the very very friendliest people I've ever met.

I just found out my great grandmother was gullah geechee. And that she had to flee from South Carolina, they said my great grandfather was seminole Indian. I wish I knew more than this. 😔

I am a Lowcountry Salt Water Gullah Geechee and I love it and my mother's mom's nickname was Geechee Gal and I'm searching what part of Africa my ancestors came from, yes land is very important to my people in SC and the pink people would do anything to steal land but not from my family and they stole most of that land on Hilton Head Island and the other Islands as well.

I'm Ridgeland SC and ur right land is important to us...my families have been here from the beginning.. we didn't buy our land nor was it given to us..one of ways we have protected our land is through aire property.. where the family owns the land and not just one individual...harder to get tricked out of your land because everyone in family has to agree to sell.. Hilton Head island all along Spanish Rd and other area of the island has been taken over by ghostskins..St Helena, Daufuskie Island, and other islands along coast of SC are taken over by ghostskins using land tax hikes to drive our native people from their land....black water geechie stand up!

i have Low country Ancestry from SC but My Gramma was American Indian, Cherokee and labeled as "colored" as many were back then! Her husband was a plantation owner and they had 6 children, they owned over 600 acres. when he passed none of it was passed to them because they were of color. it was auctioned off. researching now, his will is in SC Historical Society Archives

ya know This vid is very true, however, it fails to mention those who fought for the confederacy. While they wasn't nearly as numerous as those who fought against it, they still fought freely for the south. The war is written by the victors as a war against Slavery, however for the southerner it was a war states rights. The Gullah Geechee people are a distinct and intermixed group on the barrier islands of South Carolina and Georgia. They do bring a rich heritage to all of us, black, white, yellow or otherwise colored. And yes I have many friends who grew up in those cultures.

I do believe that there were tribes who were in the Americas thousands of years before the white man even appeared on the planet. That doesn't mean those tribes didn't migrate here from Africa. I think black people visited and lived all over the planet as they so chose. Doesn't mean we aren' t originated out of Africa.

Do your Genaolgy. DNA tests are fake. Try looking for an Ancestral Library in your State. They're free and house more classified information than the regular Genealogical Websites.
Never do a Genealogy test or any blood test… trace your family thru your states archive… get the names of your grandparents as far as you can go back and take them to the states archive and get real info

Ok man the slaves that were brought to the English colonies that became the USA began in 1619. In all it is estimated that as many as 12million Africans ended up in North America. However far less came straight to North America, they were brought to seasoning ports in Jamaica and Barbados before being sold into slavery. You can visit the slave seasoning ports today also the slave auction sites in Charleston SC

1910 is long after the slave trade on ships during the 1600s up to the 1800s.
1910 slavery was abolished in 1865. South Carolina was the most slave dependent state. They left the union first to preserve their right to own Africans as slaves
@Adam Jefferson, Slavery ended in 1865. Most people will start research with 1870 census and work back. The first census was 1790. Also, not everyone enslaved in SC was from Africa, I think most will agree with you there, especially those who know from which tribes they hail from. I say look at 1860 and 1870 for more details.
