    I tried this mod. It made my clean channel incredably clean (distortion almost impossible), the downside is it made a huge volume jump in crunch mode.
    A better compromise is to put a lower gain tube in the spot one tube to the left (it's the first tube in the circuit, V1 in most amps, V9 in this amp). Cleaner sound on the rhythm channel, but keeps the balance between clean, crunch, and lead.

      @BrunoMendesPT  7 лет назад

      It all comes down to personal preference. In my opinion replacing V1 to a lower gain tube kills the aggressiveness of this amp but if that’s your thing go for it!!!
      Also I can’t see it as a 3 channel amp because it’s impossible to level the volume between clean and crunch (whatever the tubes, whatever the settings). I see it only as a 2 channel amp, from Clean to Lead or from Crunch to Lead.

      @Crunchifyable2 7 лет назад

      Bruno Mendes yeah. it's definitely a compromise between clean and crunch and at certain settings the volume jump is minimized.
      I think 5751 tubes in v1 and v2 might be the ticket for me or just keep it stock.
      I like how the clean channel distorts for like ac/DC but it's impossible to get metal cleans unless you do what you did with the 12au7 in v2 (over input jack) or modify pickup height or use single coils for cleans.
      12au7 in v1 (first input tube) did kind of muddy up all the channels. The different tube impedance changes the tone...but overall volume went down...which was actually very nice for the lead channel.
      still an awesome amp.

    just changed the tube thanks to this video, I'm so glad to finally have a clean tone on this amp! my guitar has pretty hot pickups and has always sounded hella distorted on the clean channel, but not anymore, now I can play sad emo chords and caveman slam on the same rig! (I bought a cheap ECC82)

      Awesome! Glad the video helped, and great choice with the ECC82! Balancing hot pickups with a solid clean tone is tricky, but sounds like you’ve nailed it. Now you’ve got the best of both worlds-emo chords and caveman slams! 🤘🔥

    thanks for this vid. it worked as described cuz the clean channel wasn't clean before. for me the max volume is now too low for what I need so gonna try AT7 see if the in between is better. thanks again

      What do you think about the 12AT7? To my liking it's still way too dirty.

    I’m doing this to the lead channel. I prefer the crunch channel, but want to use the lead channel for solid cleans.

      How was your experience with that? Not sure you can clean up the Lead Channel.

    I have single coils so this isn't a huge problem for me, but maybe the columen knob roll off on the guitar is enough for you high output humbucker guitars?

      Not exactly the same thing, but I understand your point of view.

    I got a big improvement from switching from the stock (Bad?) tube to a JJ tube I had lying around. It got it back to the way it was when I got the amp, cleanish on 1. Whereas before it was nothing but fart noises until 2.
    I've looked at the schematic...the "clean channel" is kind of similar to a jcm 800 2203 cascaded circuit. You can switch to a lower gain tube but are still running cascaded gain stages (!) and going to get getting grit (which I hear when you dig in).
    I see you're running it on 2. I've got mine on gain 1 with about the same level of cleanness. Very Clean on my Neck pickup and kind of gritty on my bridge (using an LP with hot Alnico humbuckers)
    Might try a 12AU7 but right now I'm using it in my Blackstar HT-5. With the 6262, the more you lower the gain, the more noise you get from the power amp.

    • @BrunoMendesPT
      @BrunoMendesPT  Месяц назад

      I'm running some pretty hot pickups, which might be causing the grit you're hearing. As for the power amp noise, I don’t recall noticing any. Thanks for the feedback!

    How does this tube swap affect crunch mode (the crunch button...not talking about the lead channel).
    I like the cleans but also like normal crunch mode with gain on about 1.

    • @BrunoMendesPT
      @BrunoMendesPT  Месяц назад

      This tube affects both the clean and crunch channels, but if you’ve got the gain set to 1, it should still provide enough for you.

  • @zolwikwkurwik
    @zolwikwkurwik 4 года назад +1

    I barelly use more than 2 or 3 gain on crunch and lead channels. Will this mod allow me to get the same sound by setting the gain knobs at higher values?

    • @BrunoMendesPT
      @BrunoMendesPT  Месяц назад

      This won’t touch the Lead channel, but it will seriously reduce the Crunch gain. I’m not sure if you’ll still get the same tone after swapping out this tube. Did you give it a shot?

  • @RandyFricke
    @RandyFricke 7 лет назад +1

    Not much point putting the covers back on after you've touched them with oily fingers. It's my opinion that the sterile room integrity of the tube glass should remain sterile. I don't trim my string ends either so what do I know...

    • @jargero8203
      @jargero8203 5 лет назад +4

      You can touch vacuum tubes all you want after eating fast food....its no way at all possible, that any of your finger oils damage or effect the tubes integrity/life. You can literally bounce them off concrete floors...the heat generated by the internal heater will never get hot enough to jave any adverse structural effects...

    Very well done video, process order included... very nice and safe. Liked the clean sound.
    I'm going to buy a 6262 infinium 212 soon and am thinking of using electroharmonix pre amp tubes... to start... maybe end up with a mix of some sort.

      +Bruno Mendes thank you for the video
      What does the crunch sound like ?
      have you tried higher gain tubes such as a 12AT7 or 12AY7 (less popular) ?
      I have a 6262, but I'm not happy with the difference in volume between clean and crunch. At some stage I am looking to a mod to fix that imbalance, but it's going to require more than just a tube swap I'm sure.

    • @BrunoMendesPT
      @BrunoMendesPT  8 лет назад +2

      Tried a 12AT7 but It wasn't the sound I was after. The crunch is ok but I don’t really use it. Normally I use the clean, clean + tube screamer for a breakup type of sound, Lead for rhythm work and for soloing just add a tube screamer plus a pinch of delay.
      I don’t think you’ll be able to rectify the difference in volume, between clean and crunch, and not lose something in the sound department. Even the EVH 5150 50W has that volume difference and to fix it on the 100W model they added another tube.
      It’s possible and if you take it has a personal project it will be lots of fun.

      Thanks for the reply *****
      I'll try the 12AY7 and report back to you. It has a lower gain than the 12AT7 but a bit more than the 12AU7, which has more raw power handling. The cabinets I have all colour the sound differently and I have never been able to get anything other than a cranked metal sound, which is great, but it's not what I play. Again, I'm a more overdrive bluesy player.
      My goto rig is a modded Marshall Valvestate 8080 combo driving a silverface CBS Fender Bassman 100 into a couple of quad boxes. I only use a modded DOD overdrive and I occasionally run a Caline CP12 Timmy Clone in the effects loop as a lead boost against a second guitar. That combo of gear has all the tonal goodness I ever want. I am now trying to replicate it.
      Re balancing up the clean / crunch, I figured it would not just be cutting a few tracks, but I figured I could switch some extra clean gain into the chain without breaking the crunch, which isn't bad. At the moment, its a spare head, just in case the Bassman fails.

  • @infectionsman
    @infectionsman 3 года назад

    But wont this just move the range of the volume control? Basically around 5-10 on the dial will give you what you had on 1 before, exact same volume and gain structure, yet now you cant get the full volume and grit that you had before when cranking it. I mean you are just subbing in a low gain tube.

    • @BrunoMendesPT
      @BrunoMendesPT  3 года назад

      And that's the purpose, to make your Crunchy Cleans cleaner, if you want more gain just use the crunch channel. It's not for everyone but I prefer my clean channel to be crystal clear.

  • @Jubular

    Is the pre amp tube changed the same one for the crunch channel, or does that have it's own tube? thanks.

    • @BrunoMendesPT
      @BrunoMendesPT  9 лет назад +2

      +Jason Doomchild Bloodlung Sorry dude, I missed your comment. For crunch it's the same tube, if you lower the gain to get a cleaner clean the crunch will also be affected, a lot. If you mean the Lead channel just try a nicer tube in the second position tube (Mesa Boogie or Tungsol work very good).

      Totally agree for the lead channel, swapped mine's stock v2 with a Mesa tube, totally different amp.... stock sounds overcompressed and just give broken harmonics, also it adds a lot of noise in the background; watching your video I'm about to swap the v1 too, hopefully it will not affect the great tone I got in the LEAD channel, don't know exactly if v1 does affect any of the lead stages; later I'll try to swap the other stock tubes with fair ones, stay tuned for news , big thanks for this vid!

      Joselity guitar Thank you for the heads up. The first tube (which is actually V10 in the circuit) only affects clean and crunch. Keep rocking \m/

      just swapped the clean channel dedicated tube with an EHX 12AU7, just can say: WOW!!! yes, there's a big volume loss but now it has cleans, it has good sound, dynamics, it's an excellent option for this amp; I've tried with an old 12AT7 I got at home but still not so clean, so I recommend this tube swap to everybody who needs this amp to be more versatile; by the way, crunch mode sounds much better with the 12AU7 installed; it has lots of vintage tones and still can go distorted if necessary; definetaly, big thx Bruno!!!

    I consider "mod" to be changing the inside of the amp.
    Changing a tube is not much of a mod.
    But they do sound different.
    For cleans, Mullard 12ax7 is very good.

    • @BrunoMendesPT
      @BrunoMendesPT  8 лет назад +2

      It is an excellent tube for cleans, but this amp needs a lower gain tube to enter the really clean territory.

    Very Good video! Some questions: do you have a bugera 6262 with infinium or without? Also, I would like to know, what your experiences were regarding volume drop. It definitly has a volume drop, which is no problem, but is the volume as such also compatible within a band? Can it still get loud enough with saturating the power amp section so much that the clean tone is once again driven to absolute oversaturation, ending in gain escapades again?
    Thanks in advance!

    • @BrunoMendesPT
      @BrunoMendesPT  9 лет назад

      +Pipp Priss I have the version without Infinium (but the infinium only affects the power amp section so it should work fine on both versions). The volume it has is more than enough to play with a loud drummer. I never needed to crank the clean volume past 5 (and it’s still crystal clean) so I’m not really sure if it saturates after that, just try it and see for yourself. Let me know how it works out for you.
