This is a cover of "The Instinct", which is the main theme track of the Killer Instinct series. I covered the `94 version of "The Instinct" which appeared on the Killer Cuts CD that came with the SNES game.
It`s one of my favorite game soundtracks ever and I absolutely LOVE the original lead synth tone (apparently coming from an Ensoniq TS-10 synthesizer). It blew me away when I was a little kid and it still does nowadays, so I felt like I FINALLY had to make a cover.
I re-arranged a few parts but tried to stick as close to the original as possible since the original composition is just awesome! :)
Original track was composed and produced by the one and only Robin Beanland and co-composed by Graeme Norgate and published by Rare ltd. . All credits belong to them and Rare ltd..
Original release: 1994.

@SYNDRONE That and, unlike Mick Gordon, you didn't reinvent the wheel as far as I'm concerned about the track as a whole. Edit: I just want to confirm that I don't dislike Mick Gordon by any stretch
@@VanVuurenStudios0310 Well, Mick is a brillant musician! I guess he tried to do something fresh while still paying hommage to the original soundtrack as much as possible. I think he mostly succeded, but I know what you mean by trying to reinvent the wheel. I think Mick is not someone who could just cover or copy something and I'm sure it wasn't an easy task to come up with something new that also respects the original music. The main theme is probably the weakest of his contributions but the other tracks are incredible (for example the Cinder or Fulgore tracks). :)

@@SYNDRONE absolutely agree. I did have a channel I spent building 13 years, let me repeat 13 years, that was deleted for things I never did once (spam scam commercially deceptive material). Just a mysterious ban. 150 videos, around 600k views channel-wide (mostly views of not my own personal content, but stuff like video games and Hollywood film clips) JUST got onto the YPP and it all got obliterated. So when I praise you it’s coming from a pretty defeated place. Like I said, Keep up the good work. I do mean it. It’s hard out here, man

@@7SKYZ1SUNPUBGM Haha I haven't played PUBG in quite some time but I don't recall it having a strong melody or something that can be made into an entertaining guitar arrangement (old video games always had way more melody driven music). But I think I'd rather do something more recent because PUBG isn't as present anymore... 😅

Hi Syndrone. I owned the SNES game and the Killer Cuts CD too used to listen to the whole album on repeat but The instinct was really the gold in it. I think this is the most covered VG song on youtube and glad I found out this version by 'accident'. It feels like an upgrade what really stands out is the quality and timbre of the whole arrangement plus the superior Guitar playing that shines thru and the lead tone synth with this amazing sustain and sparkling crystal sounding. In other words pure quality.
I really love the lead synth sound you done if you could briefly describe the effect chain to get a similar tone on a guitar. I can hear a type of wah but not sure if it's actually a wah on the chain as you seem to be stepping on a pedal during the lead lines. Really tricky to describe as I'm not a FX expert. Blessings keep up this outstanding quality !! Lots of love. Cheers

Thanks for your comment. I can't really remember the effect chain, but I rarely use complicated chains. There was definitely a wah-wah going on which was automated in my DAW, (and which gives the majority of the effect that you hear), probably a bit of chorus to give it a touch of 80s tone to match the synth, and reverb plus delay to make it smooth. :)

@@soloio1829 Yep, kind of. I used a plugin for the wah-wah which was automated in Cubase. It`s just important to use it before the amp, so I recorded the DI and then applied the automation of the wah-wah and then reamped it afterwards.

This revives good old memories - already back then I thought the game's soundtrack was very nice and this is a really well done slightly heavier version. Curious for more (gaming) music. I started getting a little into recording as well and should do something nerdy too! :D

U can tell me if it is a Japanese Guitar that's in the original and also the tempo seems slowed just a touch witch makes ur guitar almost talk!! Thanks for this ver u have done so many of us Killer Instinct Fans Proud !! Oh Bob Yannes designed the Sid Chip for the Commodore 64 and went on to create Ensoniq :)

I don`t really know what guitar was used in the original track to sample the lead sound, but Robin Beanland told me that it was a simple preset on the Ensoniq TS-10. I think the patch they used was "Monsterlead" (I have that preset on an Ensoniq emulation but it`s not exactly the same, just kind of the same direction). I am sure they did a lot of modulation and automation to make the original lead sound so good!
Thanks for the information about Bob Yannes. I didn`t know that! I wish I could find a great TS-10 or TS-12 for a good price. I`m sure they still sound amazing today! Old Ensoniq`s are awesome! :D
