“Goblincore” is the grubby cousin of TikTok’s “Cottagecore”

  • “Cottagecore” captivated TikTok last year-featuring aesthetically pleasing videos of people making their own bread, candles, enjoying nature and having picture-perfect picnics. Now, “Goblincore” has entered the scene as the trend’s chaotic, dirty cousin.

    Been goblincore before the internet existed. Then combine that with vulture culture. Taxidermy, creepy trinkets, skulls, cursed looking toys, frightening antique tools, mushrooms everywhere. Hagcore, is probably a better way to describe the hoard I've collected.

When I tell you this aesthetic had a chokehold on the kids who didn’t fit into “scene”/emo/skater/preppy/ratchet/weeb/hipster stereotypes 😅 I mean, this crew dated boys in fedoras. We ALL liked cosplay and renaissance fairs (quite a few are Union set and costume designers), and my Facebook is STILL connected to old buddies who LARP, and it’s really freakin cool 🥹 Nice to see the new generation less lonely and keeping weird alive.

      I'm not in this fashion, but I was a scene kid. Like any fashion style, some people wear it out and others don't. It's not really anything 'new', rather just another expression of alternative fashion. It's like the witchy women who sprang to prominence in wake of grunge, women who weren't quite goth and who's children would go on to birth 'cottage core.' For a lot of these people, including the pagans they showed, this will go on to inform their style for life.
      Fashion is amazing. The more diverse, the happier the people. Try hard to uplift even if you think they look weird.

      Hi, actual goblincore enthusiast here. Yes it is primarily a fashion aesthetic based around earth tones and a nature motif that's muddier and grubbier than cottagecore, but there is a genuine philosophy behind it. Neurodivergent and queer people really do take comfort in an aesthetic and community that embraces the unusual and quirky in a way that is comforting and gentle. It is one of the few Tumblr aesthetics that actually CAN be a lifestyle, unlike stuff like cottagecore or dark academia, which are usually pretty superficial and confined to tiktoks and aesthetic moodboards.

      @MeiDoesStuffYT Год назад +1

      Not everyone does. I talk about it a lot at home and stuff because I really like Cottagecore and goblincore, they fit me and I love the colors and it makes me feel safe and comfy. We don’t have to take a step back if we don’t want to. It differs from person to person, but some people are more into it than others. There’s probably something that you really like too and people would get mad at you for that, so it’s fine. We are all different people and we can dress and have collections that we all want.

    Love the erasure of paganism in this. Like, no shade, I doubt its intentional - but your showing "littered collections" that are obviously altars and claiming it creates a safe space for ND- which it does, because paganism does- while showing a triple moon goddess effigy being placed in nature.

      I honestly think it’s something of an on-ramp to those things for people who get overwhelmed with the reading. Plenty of pagans collected such things before they made altars with them too - mine was buttons and keys. I am a f*cking mix of cottagecore, goblincore, and witchtok to make something vaguely forest-spirit-y. I have no idea what to call it but I wish to vanish into the forest and have my entire soul and being overgrown by moss and pillbugs as I rest next to animal skeletons and wildflowers and hum farie tunes to no one but the wind and trees. As the mushrooms eat my flesh I will be at peace knowing I have given back what I have taken. My old bone-china tea-set sitting next to my skeletal hand drapped in jewelry and crystals, maybe surrounded by shiny river rocks and feathers, my back pressed up against a tree stump. Never to be found by human hands again, only viewed by the forest as I view it for all eternity... that got edgy as sh!t.

      I mean. The phrase hardcore has been around since before the 1940s. So you didn’t really do it first. Also Nightcore has been around since the 90s and that’s where most tumblr users and internet nerds first heard the suffix.

      Dude we didn’t choose the name of it- what’s wrong with goblincore if there’s tons of other sub-genres u were a part of. Only one was first, so shush. A suffix is used at the end of the word and helps give the word part of its meaning. If two words share a suffix, they have something in common. If it was a different suffix it could change the whole meaning of goblincore

I just like that because I hate saying “aesthetic”, especially with a retainer, and the core part is easy and helps me categorize stuff so i don’t have to make up categories of stuff I like and if people wanna learn about it I don’t have to confusingly explain my interests and can explain one at a time. Idk if that makes sense, it did to me.
