    Best piece of skiing advice ever. I realized I was actually putting too much weight forward on my toes. "Sat back" onto ball and heel evenly and it completely changed my skiing!!

    Echoing many had shared here: hands down the best set of skiing learning videos. I watched with my kid who just did the first double black diamond ( probably a red in Europe). She now wants to do leaf skiing like you did in the other video! Thank you for those videos and only wish we can take lessons from you one day.

      Thank you, Sheila! Sounds amazing to watch your kid do the first double black diamond. I am looking forward to my own daughter doing that in the future. Leaf skiing can be fun, but be careful and chose a safe location. Many obstacles can hide under the leaves. I would love to do real life lessons with the skiers here on RUclips, so maybe that will come into reality at some point. And thank you for investing in our e-book/How to ski guide. I am sure that will be helpful. /Janus

    Excellent, succinct tips/instructions! I am standing in my bedroom in front of my computer PRACTICING all of them!! (I live in NYC and don't get out to the slopes as much as I'd like to, but as a 'visual learner,' you can be sure I will be applying your "inspirational skiing tips" whenever my twin sister and I next hit the mountains!) Thanks!... A grateful baby boomer.

    • @InspirationalSkiing

      Thats awesome, Alice! We are mostly based in Denmark and have to travel to produce most of our material, so I have practiced a lot off snow to prepare myself for skiing. In my experience it is possible to 'teach' your body the right movements to a certain extend before you get on snow. In my day job as head coach and manager of a Danish Ski Team of 15-17 year olds, I apply this idea of 'practicing skiing before skiing(on snow)' to the students program in a lot of different ways and activities. It can be a lot of fun besides being beneficial for your skiing. I hope you will have a great time next time you hit the mountains and that you experience an improvement in your skiing from these exercises! /Janus

    I'm going to Les 2 Alpes on 6 January, more apprehensive then excited, as I've not tried skiing for 35 years. I'll try to remember your tips when I'm on the green runs there.

    • @InspirationalSkiing
      @InspirationalSkiing  Год назад

      Congratulations with taking up skiing again after so many years. I once had a client who hadn't been skiing for 25 years and he was a bit nervous and thought he had to learn everything from the beginning again. Once he got on his skis, his body remembered. It was quite fascinating to see. Of course he had to brush off some dust, but he didn't start completely over. And soon after he even started to enjoy it. The shift happens as soon as you feel you are in control. I believe your body will remember something as well. I also believe that your plan to start out on the green runs is a wise choice. Then you can build from there as you start to feel that control over your speed and direction. I also believe that you might get a pleasant surprise with the equipment. There has been some huge improvements over the last 35 years which has made the skis much easier to turn. One great thing you can do to maximise your chances of success, protect yourself from injury and increase your level of enjoyment is to make sure you have prepared your body well. Maybe you are already doing regular training, but if not, I would say the most important thing is to find something you enjoy doing. Feel free to check out our SkiFit in 15 minutes videos here on the channel for an easy, fun and time efficient way to get you on the right track with your training. I would love to hear how it goes when you get on skis again, so feel free to let me know here in the comments. Have a nice day! /Janus

      @@InspirationalSkiing Got back home from Les Deux Alpes on Saturday at 4pm GMT, I had an sort of awkward fall on a blue run - Diable - which the 'instructor took my group of 20 years old plus me during lessons on Monday the second day there, and my left leg sort of semi twisted as I fell, in addition my 67 year old knees were unhappy towards the end of the lesson, and on the first day were also burning.
      The instructor put me in a lower group on a green run next to Diable, as the group I was with was going to be taken higher up the mountain on to steeper terrain. And I stuck it out till 12 noon when the lesson finished, but by then I’d had enough as both knees were burning, and I was tired out, so took the skis back to Slide Planet, and hobbled walked back to my hotel - Valentine.
      My left knee swelled up on Monday evening and night, so on Tuesday I couldn’t put much weight on my left leg, and certainly couldn’t attend lessons the next day. On the Wednesday after taking Ibuprofen and using ‘Deep Heat’ on Monday and Tuesday my left leg was a bit better, and I was able to slowly walk to the ski school to inform them I was dropping out of ski school for the rest of my week there, as at my age I didn’t want to risk any possible further injury.
      The weather was also pretty shitty, as the Sunday was a freezing fog for most of the day, Monday it started bright...ish, but the mist cam down and it was a sort of white out, with flat light on the slope, and I couldn't make out the undulations of the blue run.
      Tuesday it snowed non stop all day, and Wednesday was dull, only Thursday and Friday it was blue sky's and sunny.
      I've cancelled the trip to Alpe d'Huez and La Plagne. All of the other skiers in my hotel and in the resort I saw and talked to were 40 or 40 + years younger then me - an old French guy on a gondola said he was 9 when he started skiing. And the ones my age were obviously well seasoned skiers. In short at 67 with a 35 year gap - I was 32 last time I tried skiing in 1988 - I'm now running out of time to do skiing.
      I have a indoor slope near where I live - Chill Factore - so over the spring once my left knee and leg has healed, I'll consider doing a beginner lessons there, and IF I get comfortable and nothing bad happens, after getting used to skiing down the whole slope on a regular basis over seveal months through the year towards the 2025 season, I'll try another European resort in 2025. No-idea where, but it'll need to have gentle green runs aimed at beginners otherwise all the work at CF will be wasted.
      In addition my boots - Nordica Doberman GP 110 - were primarily designed as racing boots as I have small narrow feet - 98 mm last -, but as a 'beginner' I'll see about selling them on e-bay as they are more or less brand new, and buy some new proper beginner boots. The last maybe 102mm, [104mm will be to wide for my feet] but they will be a softer flex, and more comfortable for me. But first I want to get my leg and knee healed.
      Wishing you always fresh snow under a blue sky.

    I'm definitely going to give the balance your poles technique a try. I've really struggled to find the right arm position over the years and subsequently became one of those "hands by the hips" skiers. And I know that I've suffered because of it: I can tell it keeps me leaning just back enough that I'm not balanced. But, it feels so weird to keep my hands out to the spot you describe. I feel stiff and don't know how to make pole plants now. The only time it doesn't is when I'm going fast and making very short S-turns. So, I've been trying to slow down and get the right position in medium and large curves by holding one pole in both hands in front of me to help (especially with the upper-lower body separation) and it feels natural when I do that. But as soon as I go back to holding each pole in my hands, I feel stiff...unless I speed up and lean into my turns.

    • @InspirationalSkiing
      @InspirationalSkiing  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for sharing your experience, Rich G! What you describe is quite normal. Each year I have a bunch of young students aspiring to become level 1 ski instructors at the end of the year. Many of them feel the same way in the beginning. As you are already aware a good arm and hand position is beneficial in two ways: 1. You won't have a bad position, that disturbs you're balance. 2. You will instead have a much better position to keep you in the middle and adjust your balance. And the hand position really start to make sense when you add a good pole plant. Then the upper and lower body movements work together and your skiing will feel more coordinated, harmonious and balanced. I suggest you watch our video How to do The Basic Pole Plant in Skiing to get some tips for how you can master a good pole plant (which will also help with your arm position). I hope this helps. Have a nice day! /Janus

      We are so happy to hear that, Alirio Silva! We hope you will enjoy and benefit from trying these exercises with your family. Norway is such a beautiful country and the ski areas have their own unique charm and atmosphere. Stine and I have lived there a few winters while teaching in a ski school, and I lived there one winter just to practice my skiing. We keep coming back, and we have a few trips to Norway planned this Northern winter to produce more videos and take photos for our upcoming ebooks/step-by-step guides. Each year I go to Aspen/Colorado for a week with the ski team I manage. It is such an awesome place to ski! Have a nice day! /Janus

    hi watched your video without sound, so have no idea what you're talking about but as a ski fanatic just two pointers: please fasten your helmetstrap (you are the example for your students), skiteachers have their jackets buttoned up, always! you look like it is too warm, opened your jacket during filming and kept on wearing your brad new Hestra gloves (at the end you've put them off).

    • @InspirationalSkiing
      @InspirationalSkiing  4 года назад +1

      Hi erik van der molen. Thank you for your comment. I totally agree about the helmet strap. I simply forgot after a long day of shooting videos (where I occasionally took of the helmet due to the warm weather), and I have also addressed that in a response to another comment. I understand where you are coming from with the jacket and I am aware that having it buttoned up is a requirement for ski instructors in some ski schools. Here is the background for my choice of letting the jacket a bit open when speaking to the camera. In the first ski instructor course I took back in 2001 (within the Norwegian system) we were taught to meet the guest with an open, approachable and welcoming attitude. To help support this the examiner suggested that we took off our goggles when speaking with the guest and opened the top of our jacket a bit when we first met them. In my almost 20 years as a ski instructor I have found this approach to work very well when building a good relationsship of trust with the guest. I therefore also pass this experience forward when I teach my ski instructor students today (within the Danish system), still knowing that certain ski schools have their own uniform guidelines which one of course is to follow when working there. Thanks again for your comment and thoughts. Have a nice day! /Janus

    Thank you for making this video. I have been struggling with my stance. My trouble is that I can not see myself skiing, therefore I don’t know what I am doing wrong. It’s only when a friend points out a mistake I can learn. Is there a way to self diagnose if my stance is wrong?

    • @InspirationalSkiing
      @InspirationalSkiing  2 года назад

      This is such a good question, Gaurav Malhotra!
      To assess your stance here are some general tips:
      1. Learn how a good stance looks like, feels like.
      2. Educate yourself (through videos like this one), so you have a good idea of why a good stance is a certain way.
      3. Team up with a good friend with the same or more knowledge and give feedback to each others skiing.
      4. Record some video of your skiing and compare it to the things you have learned about a good stance.
      5. Hire a ski instructor to help you with specifics.
      6. Carv soles and their app is a phenomenal tool for self-assessment, that I use myself. It provides very useful data about pressure, skiing angles etc. for each run as well as tips on how to improve the weakest areas in ones skiing. Check them out here (affiliate link):
      getcarv.com/?rfsn=6241962.482103&
      Use the promocode: CARVLIKEJANUS to get a favourable discount.
      In this video I give you a few specific cues that might be helpful:
      1. Feel contact between the boot and the shin. If you feel the boot-contact mostly on the back of your leg, your stance is leaning too far back.
      2. Have your ankles, knees and hip slightly bend.
      3. Keep you hands in front where you can see them with your peripheral sight.
      There are many factors to a good stance and it takes practice to improve. But thats also a lot of fun!
      I hope all of this helps. /Janus

    Pressure ...I agree on whole foot BUT NOT toward back of foot AT ALL. Pressure on whole foot slightly toward BALL of the foot. Liked everything else you said......I am PSIA Level 2, CS 2, teaching and training instructors in Pa. since 1977. :-)

    • @InspirationalSkiing
      @InspirationalSkiing  4 года назад +1

      Hi 613chaya
      Thanks for the comment, here are my humble thoughts on and experiences with a more ball-of-the-foot heavy pressure vs. a more whole foot/back of the foot approach.
      I believe the sweet spot as indicated in the video is crucial for good balance as an anchor point. I do however - as I also mention in the video - believe that the whole foot plays a role. The whole foot is available as an interface between you and the ground, so you might as well use it. For the sake of simplicity and the greatest impact, I focus on the 3 things in the video, I believe will help people the most.
      I think I understand where you are coming from. Searching for pressure toward back of the foot has traditionally been associated with going into the back seat. That is, however, only if you do not combine it with my tip number two of keeping contact with the front of the boot. This effectively counteracts going into the back seat for most people.
      Having a good connection with the sweet spot as an anchor point does provide a lot of stability, especially at the end of the turn when pressure is building up. And I have often seen this exercise and new found awareness of the sweet spot change my students skiing dramatically for the better: balance in the middle over the feet, removing washing out, better grip, more effective turning effort etc.
      In my own skiing I sometimes use a more ball-of-foot heavy pressure at the initiation of the turn to increase the engagement of the front of the ski, even though this mostly comes from an increased pressure on the front of the boot with the shin (the stifness of the boot works as a lever on the ski).
      Striving towards slightly more front foot pressure in the initiation of the turn also help me to counteract the natural tendency for the COM to be pushed back at the end of the turn, so I stay in my middle position. The pressure underneath the foot is - and should be - a bit dynamic depending on varying conditions and what you are trying to achieve. BUT I believe, that it should not be at the expense of a good connection with the sweet spot.
      If you seek ball-of-the foot pressure without a solid sweet spot foundation you increase the risk of: 1. Washing out the tail due to too much front ski/too little mid ski pressure. 2. Too much inside ski lead, which is connected with front ski pressure on the outside ski and tail pressure on the inside ski = an unstable base for starting the next turn causing all sorts of balance trouble. 3. Pushing on the ball of the foot might, oddly enough, also push you into the back seat (if you lose contact between the shin and the boot). Think about it. If you extend your ankles you body will move back and away from the toes = into the back seat.
      Some people might benefit from more pressure on the ball of the foot, though (that is, if pushing with the ball of their foot doesn't make them lose contact between the shin and the front of the boot). It all depends on what they are currently doing well and what they try to achieve.
      I am a national examiner in the Danish system as well as a level 2 in the Norwegian system, co-author of the current Danish instructor manual, year round ski coach for a ski team of teenagers, Danish champion in two disciplines on the Maxxtracks ski carpet and I have 20 years of teaching experience and constant learning :-)

    I can not wait till tomorrow and practice your recommendations, I am a quite heavy person 235 lbs (106 KG) no too tall, 5' 9" (1.75 m) do you have any recommendations, I start a turn and almost immediately start to get a lot of speed.

    • @patrickpurcell3671
      @patrickpurcell3671 4 года назад +1

      Practise quick and shorter turns on more gentle slopes. You need to quickly shift your weight downhill as well as quick edging.
      If steep do short turns (brush carve, pivot or braquage rather than pure carving) search on RUclips.

    • @InspirationalSkiing
      @InspirationalSkiing  4 года назад +2

      I agree with PATRICK Purcell, those things will help to keep the speed down. A few simple tips, you can try: 1. Point your outside ski gradually more and more throughout the turn to create a round turn shape. 2. Balance primarily on the outside ski to make this turning effort more effective. 3. Accept the speed picking up in the first half of the turn (to the point where the skis are pointing straight down, a.k.a. the "fall line"). 4. From there you continue to point your outside ski more and more across the fall line (towards the side of the slope). You can continue this movement until you stop completely or have reached the desired speed to start the next turn. I recommend that you always try new moves on a gentle slope until you feel comfortable with them and have a good sensation of the effect they have. I hope these tips will work for you. Have a nice day! /Janus

    Ski 100 days a year and you’ll figure it out. Ski 5 days a year and you’ll struggle.

    • @InspirationalSkiing
      @InspirationalSkiing  5 лет назад +3

      We are always in favour of more skiing! And you are totally right that you can learn less in 5 days than in a 100 days. What I often see, though, is that self taught skiers with many days on skis develop some “bad habits” that cause them to struggle too, like supporting themselves on the back of the boot for example. And I have often seen a huge development in my students skiing in just a few days, when following a structured program with the right exercises and guidance. The exercises in this video often have a very positive effect on people’s ability to balance on their skis, especially when combining them. And their balance sometimes improves right away which instantly takes their skiing to the next level which is quite exciting. Give these exercises a try and let me know what you think. /Janus

    You can remove everything you mentioned before 2:28. The Sweet Spot demonstration is what skiers should focus on to become confident with balancing on one arch after the other. You do Not think about the foot you are going to stand on, you think about getting off the foot you are on. Your weight will automatically go to the new turning ski. If you think about the new turning ski, you may push it away and around Thinking you are standing on it but you may still be on the previous foot.
    You also don't think about where your weight is under the foot, you think about your upper body position which will apply the weight where you need it. Kneecaps and chest pointing Down the hill as you get off the old turning foot. If your skis aren't turning tight enough to slow you down, press your knees forward to load the tips and push your hip into the turn to angle your legs more.
    3:55 This is useless. You stand up and rest your shins against the tongue of the boot. The tongue is your accelerator and brake pedal. Release pressure to go faster with longer radius turns and apply pressure to slow down by making shorter radius turns.
    4:25 Put your hands on the handlebars of your bicycle, point the front tire down the hill and get off one pedal after the other. That is the body position with weight change the skis need from you.
    5:30 You will be thinking about your poles and not what you are supposed to be doing to allow the skis to turn. Just think of that bicycle and the accelerator and brake pedal and you will always ski in control.
