I don't remember if I told you this, but based on your review of the SJ4000, I went and bought one. It works great for the price! I honestly feel it has better color, saturation, detail and sharpness than the GoPro comparisons I've seen on RUclips. Audio is excellent as well. I paid a little more than what most are going for because it was shipped from Los Angeles (free shipping & insurance) and since I live close by, I received it by mail in just two days!!!! Thanks for your great videos and taking the time to share them with all of us.
i bought this camera and mounted it in the very front of my motorcycle helmet, and it picked up the noise of my motorcycle quite well at medium revs, also the view is much better then installing it at the side.
I'm a little too self conscious to stick that honker on the side of my helmet. I've mounted them on the handle bars behind the windscreen, the engine crash bar and the side bags crash bars. All have worked fine, minimal vibration and you can pick up the exhaust sounds also.
I think the method of using sand paper on the mount really works as compare to other riding footage, your footage looks more stable than others well done
Alright mate, i bought one of these cams the other day and after a day of not having it adjusted right, i got it facing ahead of me now and i have to say its brilliant Quality!! i need to sort out the res a little bit but over all im well chuffed it, thanks for the vids mate :)
Thanks for the info. I bought a California Sugar Wide Angle, ($40 USD on Amazon) it is pretty much the same one, only with a wider screen. The thing is, the instruction manual that comes with it is terrible, so I really appreciate your clips on it. The only problem is no access for the USB port, so I marked it and machined a hole for the plug. Then I used some of the UV activated polymer type adhesive to build up a shoulder around the plug. I put a little silicone di-electric grease on the surface of the plug to act as a release agent first. Now I can plug it in while riding, while still using the case. This still keeps it pretty well protected. I plan to use this camera on a cross country trip in a few weeks, that will include Sturgis and points west including the Pacific Coast Highway from Seattle to San Diego. Keep up the good work.
Love your reviews, I bought a Mobius a few days ago after watching your (and many others) review. Hope the weather here in Sweden will be better soon so I can test it on my motorcycle. Keep up the good work!
I've taken part in recording motorbike engines for professional audio use, and the way we did it was with a three mic set up. One inside the faring near the air intake, a second in the faring but nearer the engine and the last basically put on to the reg plate to catch the exhaust sound, with a big bag on my back to record it all. Worked a charm and got great sound, but this was purely for audio purposes though with no video recording. Tempted to get this camera!
I decided to get a SJCAM M10 Cube after looking at all your reviews of the SJ4000. I noted that extreme angle for the helmet mount was necessary back whan I was fooling around with a MD80. Thank goodness for the wide-angle lenses of the Mobius & SJ4000. My first attempts with a MD80 either had too much road or too much sky.
I've heard in the news that the reason Michael Schumacher is now in such a bad condition is because his head-mounted camera worked on impact with the stone like a hammer - or rather chisel - split the helmet in half and further damaged both his skull and the brain. It was GoPro. It makes sense, because since they are made to be indestructible, a helmet wouldn't stand a chance when confronted with it at great speed and force. I always had doubts that putting huge, square, solid box permanently on a helmet would be safe and sadly it turned out it really might be deadly. Since motorcycle helmets are more solid than ski ones, it might look safer, but we need to remember there is no snow, the speeds are greater and pretty much everything is as solid as a rock. Apart from that, Techmoan, as a motorcyclist myself I would recommend you use a good, full-face helmet. It can really make a difference.
Techmoan Can I suggest something you may choose to ignore :), if you review a cam and it does timelapse, when you do the night car shots, just pointing it at the sky to see if it stars are visible, a few people seem to love doing timelapse star shots. of course I know this is a stupid idea, we are in the UK, we only have clouds at night...
Great fun, thanks. I must admit, I bought the Garmin Virb, returned it due to bulk, bought the GoPro Session as it's just been reduced in price, but as I only want a camera for cycle commute (insurance), these cheap generic devices may suffice for a quarter of the price.
Love all of your reviews buddy, subbed. I've just bought a knock off version of this on ebay for £22, so will be attempting my own review on it armed with the knowledge gleaned from yours. :)
To get the sound of your bike "the roar of the engine" properly you'd need to have the bike mic'd up from the camera, or use a second recording source to capture the engine sound only and overdub like Schaaf does: HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR MOTORCYCLE ONBOARD SOUND RECORDINGS // SCHAAF-METHOD
Zomg! Coming from Chorley, I was super surprised to see you riding down Wigan Lane! Lol. Was thinking, hmmmm. That road looks familiar, then the cottage by the tip rocked into view 😄👍
How does mounting a camera affect the strength of the helmet ? I know this seems implausible, but isn't a helmet mounted camera implicated in Michael Schumachers helmet splitting open ?
Thanks for the video and the tip on the Sanding.Another tip I've come up with that I've not seen mentioned on any of the videos of these Cameras/Mounting is to get the,"Thumbscrews" really tight use a cross-headed/phillips screwdriver inside the Thumbscrews and you can get the joints,"Rock Solid". Also if the Thumbscrews are too invasive they can be replaced with the correct length(will need to be hack-sawed to size) M5 Flat headed bolts and then these can be tightened with a normal screwdriver. You can get a pack of ten for a few quid from B&Q/Diy.com.
Hi Mat, Nice review. Ehmmmm.......wich one is best for use on a motor? The SJ4000 or the TCL SVC-200?? I am guessing the TCL but i want to see your opinion before i place an order. Thanks Mat, Greetings Richard.
I did notice from the shadow that you mounted the camera on the left side of your helmet. If you have the typical bike configuration, your exhaust is on the right side. Would not mounting it on the right have increased the bike sound? Just a thought. Thanks.
As usual, a fantastic video review. The best way to capture the engine sound is to mount the camera somewhere out of the wind. If you have to have the camera mounted to your helmet, a separate audio recorder mounted behind your windscreen or under your seat will pick up plenty of the mechanical sounds and far less wind noise. I think the setup mordeth13 (M13) uses is probably one of the best for moto-vlogging on the cheap.. but you need to be prepared to eat your camera if you have a major off. M13's Helmet Camera Setup Revealed!
Thank you for the review an video I figured that you can add some sponge padding in the cover holes so the loud noise will be muffled, like a microphone with sponge cover.
Good afternoon buddy Lovely video, got a similar action camera and have mounted it onto my camera today, first time rider so I literally put the mount straight with the sticky pad which I hope I have watched this video first to angle it in a 45degree angle 😆...But yeah I will take into consideration about sanding the joints to let it hold into place 👍 I have drilled a hole where the micro usb section is on the waterproof case so I can charge the camera while I commute with a power bank to my backpack, reason is the action camera always dies so quick!! Many thanks for this video, ride safe buddy
Hey Techmoan For video quality do you like the SJ4000 or the Mobius. For a helmet camera, would recommend stand view or wide angle with a Mobius? Thanks!
That's was very nicely made vid I'm a biker I'm looking at GoPro and drifts cams but don't have cash for that and this looks like good cam to go on my helmet thanks for review it on bike
Watched the full review (which was very good) but realised you mentioning that it wasn't possible to invert the video so that the video was the right way up if the camera is upside down. Wanted to let people know that this is possible on my SJ4000 which has the 'N20150801V01' operating system :)
Could you maybe tell me, which settings you got there in the camera to shot this film? i like the colors and everything looks nice. or did you put everything on "auto"?
I love your reviews you do, there in depth, informative, and clearly explain everything you could need to know. Have you thought of doing this professionally for a magazine on line etc? Anyway, after seeing the sj1000 review i was going to buy one, but im glad i didn't as as soon as i saw the sj4000 and your review i knew i wanted one, so using the link you have provided ive ordered one. Hopefully it will be brilliant for shooting snowboarding indoors, i never wanted to buy a go pro as imo there extremely over priced.
Thank you for all your videos, please keep them coming. As of your last video, what has been your favorite dash cam that you use(or would want to use) on a full time basis?
I'm always wondering if those attachments for the helmet are not gonna come off as you drive around with the camera attached to it. I mean, its only 170 grams or so, sure.. thats not a massive amount. But when this cam in its waterproof case sticks out from the side of your helmet as you gain higher speeds, it will catch some wind, right? I know theres a cable included to secure it in case it does come off, but i dont think theres a way to do that easily on a helmet.
Hello, I am going to purchase a action camera for Snow Skiing and also car racing. Do you have any you recommend more than others for a helmet mount which is water proof? I was set to get a SJ4000 but not sure if it will be too bulky for a helmet. Cheers
The thing I like about big boxy camera like this is (being a cyclist) they are VERY noticeable and the large lens surround makes it obvious what they are. If you've got a dangerous or threatening driver, one point to a camera like this and they usually stay back and behave a bit more.
Another place to put the camera is... on top. That's how we drove to Toscany and took many films. Next thing though is to put it all together. Quite a job. Used Movymaker and later Pinacle for that. The latter is better; has stabilisation in it. Also a possible subject for a video? :-)
great video man. but i do have a question. how do you work with the self timer? i cant seem to figure it out. the motion detection only applies to the video, been trying it to capture picture but it doesn't work. can you help me? thanks
I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but how did you get your footage on RUclips? I tried to upload a video today that was a .MOV from this camera and it wouldn't publish because RUclips said it was the wrong file type. I don't know if it's something with the camera, the sd card or what
It seems to be the perfect action camera for me, but the only thing I don't like with this camera is that the fish bowl effect is more noticeable then on, let's say the Gopro Hero? And it looks so cold!! The colours seem so cold. I really don't know if I should buy this one.
Surprised the camera didn't fall off the helmet. I mounted mine with the sticky mount and nearly lost it while riding...behind a Goldwing windshield. Maybe I should've used crazy glue🤔
some will argue that the best place to mount a camera like that while riding a motorbike is the chin guard of your helmet. See CycleCruza's and i think eveRide's youtube videos for details
Hello, quick question, the stick on the mount is strong enough(helmet mount)?let's say for a constant 120-130 KM/H ride on the highway and maybe some over 130 KM/H sprints? thx
Nice question. Probably not!!! But there are some extra safety cables as well. I use it only on the helmet I wear IN the car. When I stick it outside the car, I use the extra cables/zip ties
Hi their I see that the sj4000 is a awesome camera but can it also be used to freerun with like the go pro ? if yes does it use the same head strap for the gopro ?
Thank you Techmoan! The sandpaper was a genius trick! You mentioned while attaching the mount to the helmet for an overnight period. Can you please tell me more? Never attached a camera to the moto helmet! thanks again
Techmoan Perfect! Was just about to write and ask abt your bike. It seems like a very smooth sort of engine and not too loud. Thanks for your vids, well done as usual.
Thumbs Up for the SANDPAPER Tip!
You don't need to use any sandpaper. You have to tighten the screw, not the plastic around the screw. That's all.
I don't remember if I told you this, but based on your review of the SJ4000, I went and bought one. It works great for the price! I honestly feel it has better color, saturation, detail and sharpness than the GoPro comparisons I've seen on RUclips. Audio is excellent as well. Thanks for your great videos and taking the time to share them with all of us.
If you cut a bit of bicycle inner tube and have that on the frame for the mount it'll majorly reduce vibration
i bought this camera and mounted it in the very front of my motorcycle helmet, and it picked up the noise of my motorcycle quite well at medium revs, also the view is much better then installing it at the side.
I had a go pro hero 2, it was great but got so sick of not having a review screen, i'm sold on this
45 seconds in and subscribing as I like your personality.

I'm a little too self conscious to stick that honker on the side of my helmet. I've mounted them on the handle bars behind the windscreen, the engine crash bar and the side bags crash bars. All have worked fine, minimal vibration and you can pick up the exhaust sounds also.

nice review, if ur ever in a hurry when using double sided tapes use a bit of heat its part of the adhesion process (hairdryer)
Many thanks. Cleared my mind and gona get the Drift Stealth for a sneakier approach for my ride. Thumbs up for your reviews.
You sound like james May from Top Gear
Tiff needel 😁
The best all around action cam mount is the Cyclops Bandana mount found on Ebay.
British humor & countryside. How I missed you.
Congrats! I like the way you narrate the video. nice vid

Check out the polaroid xs100, they are also releasing a new version this summer. They are reasonably priced also
The WDV5000 also looks like a promising camera.
Great fun, thanks.

Very good tip about the sanding up, TY!!!!
you can put in rubber seals in those gaps to tighten the brackets

I just got one now and it is awesome!!
Portable tele on your helmet and I don't fancy sticking something to my very expensive lid!
Last point date time stamp works both ways for the plod!!
Do you prefer this camera or the sj1000
Enjoy all your vids. Thanks.
to get better stability, attach it to an owl's head.
A request. Can you also show a review of this cam on a mountain bike? Preferably on a DH mountain bike being ridden on a trail.
Good solution to the slippery joints.
Good afternoon buddy

Could you do a video showing us how to get rid of the time thing on the bottom
they usually mount this type of camera
on TOP of your helmet.
you might like it better than way.

super review. I'll be buying this for sure. Thank you sir
Hi, great movie. What are the best settings on a motorcycle? Quality, sharpness, white balance, exposure, ISO?
Is the video pixelation in the trees and tarmac like that in the raw video as well, or has it got worse in the youtube transit?
Could you maybe tell me, which settings you got there in the camera to shot this film? i like the colors and everything looks nice. or did you put everything on "auto"?
I love your reviews you do, there in depth, informative, and clearly explain everything you could need to know.

Do you think that they will come out with a update that allows a mini usb microphone to connect to the sj4000?
Great video techmoan
You're doing cracking work fella. Thanks! But how did you manage to get a sunny day in Manchester?!
Damian Brown I'm there every day, so every few months I get lucky.
Thank you for all your videos, please keep them coming.
As of your last video, what has been your favorite dash cam that you use(or would want to use) on a full time basis?
Have you fixed the fisheye effect? if so PLEASE PLEASE tell me how!

What kind of sandpaper did you use? Aren't there varying degrees/types/roughness of sandpaper?
i use those mounts and i tightened them up with a screwdriver, works fine

+Techmoan your last video about the sj4000, the charger that came with it, does it plug into an ordinary plugin?
The thing I like about big boxy camera like this is (being a cyclist) they are VERY noticeable and the large lens surround makes it obvious what they are.
If you've got a dangerous or threatening driver, one point to a camera like this and they usually stay back and behave a bit more.
In Perth, W. Australia that sort of thing winds'em up even more!
Here I am watching your tips on puting Action Cam on a Motorcycle Helmet, keep safe my new friend
Yet another great review thank you...
do the fake ones (probably fake for 28 euros via aliexpress) still perform good, do they still have 1080p and 12MP?
Another place to put the camera is... on top. That's how we drove to Toscany and took many films. Next thing though is to put it all together. Quite a job. Used Movymaker and later Pinacle for that. The latter is better; has stabilisation in it.

Is this the same camera as"Gear Pro GDV123 720p HD Sport Action Camera with 2" Touch Screen"?
does the screen power off when recording for extending periods of time? what kind of battery life do you get?
Can I use it for a snowmobile in the cold?
Surprised the camera didn't fall off the helmet.
I mounted mine with the sticky mount and nearly lost it while riding...behind a Goldwing windshield.
Maybe I should've used crazy glue🤔
some will argue that the best place to mount a camera like that while riding a motorbike is the chin guard of your helmet.
See CycleCruza's and i think eveRide's youtube videos for details
that's tough when you wear open face :D
Joe G.P.
Hahaha,now that's funny..... :-)
Joe G.P. yea i got a good laugh from it as well
would you mind doing a quick explanation on how to change the cover of the camera for the one that let's sounds in👍
hi there i would like to no between the Sj4000 and the M10 what would be a better CAm to buy i will use it mostly for my quad
Does it have a built-in microphone?
Thank you very much!
From Hungary
Hello, quick question, the stick on the mount is strong enough(helmet mount)?let's say for a constant 120-130 KM/H ride on the highway and maybe some over 130 KM/H sprints? thx
Nice question. Probably not!!! But there are some extra safety cables as well. I use it only on the helmet I wear IN the car. When I stick it outside the car, I use the extra cables/zip ties
you wear a helmet in your car?
Hi do you have any recommendations for a budget action cam around £100 for doing a bit of under water filming on holiday?
Great video, how does quality compare to the famous camera?
is this sticky enough to hold camera on rough or dirty uneven roads?
Can you take the the mount off say your helmet after you've stuck it on?
Is camera better on the left rather than right...any reason?
did it record sound within the waterproof case?
Hi their I see that the sj4000 is a awesome camera but can it also be used to freerun with like the go pro ? if yes does it use the same head strap for the gopro ?
Great review. Many thanks
Hello. Can you please tell me what you use to upload videos from the camera? Thank you
Thank you Techmoan! The sandpaper was a genius trick! You mentioned while attaching the mount to the helmet for an overnight period. Can you please tell me more? Never attached a camera to the moto helmet! thanks again
Technoman, excelent revie you were the reason to bought it, im waiting it from China to Colombia!! tell me the brand of your bike i like it!
You can't really see the bike in the video...if you want to watch a video I made about the bike, it's here Honda NC700X DCT Auto Review - Owner's Demo
Techmoan Perfect! Was just about to write and ask abt your bike. It seems like a very smooth sort of engine and not too loud.
Thanks for your vids, well done as usual.
