Thanks man ur my fav. Easy to follow but I can tell you’re very knowledgeable.
Hi Bernth, the 1st picking technique perhaps will be effective for one note per string arpeggio with alternate picking. Kindly advise.
Hello Bernth, you need to little bit upgrade your guitar)))
Sangar Pisan
The one tip you gave and the other video or this video was make sure to lift up your index finger and now I'm having the same problem I'm having with the pinky of not keeping it completely open and trying to keep everything close to the board as possible. Although I definitely see what you're saying cuz it is like I'm was anchoring my finger before which really definitely made it a lot more cumbersome I figured we just overcome with time but it does really change up your playing my lifting your index so that's a positive testimonial right there for a free guitar lesson
I clicked on this video and forgot that I had my video speed on 0.5. **Stoned Bernth voice intensifies** :D
😂👍
😂😂that happens to me all the time watching him lol
My biggest enemy is consistent practice. I struggle with inspiration and having energy to play. One day I’ll play 6 hours and not want to put the guitar down but the next 3 days I wont play at all. It’s a very toxic habit I wish I squished right when I started playing guitar 6 years ago.
Same 😔 keep trying bro
That means you're what we call an "artist." An artist needs inspiration. In my youth I was in a band. We often got bored of "practice" so we changed to a jam session. Meaning freestyle improvisation with guitar, drums and bass. 2-3 people playing together but playing whatever they feel like playing can be really fun as long as it's all in one key.
@@jdogdizzle8473 that’s exactly what I do with my band now, but I wish I put less practice into guitar hero and played rocksmith instead 😂 but actually rocksmith isn’t the best way to learn songs because the way it works can teach you toxic finger shapes, but their technique teaching is great. Taught me how to properly bend along with teaching me scales. Jesus Christ I should probably get ADHD meds
I almost dropped it completely after only playing a year in 2004 and it sounds like your going through the same thing I went through..Mentally you’re telling yourself I need to practice more and I’m not good enough, when in reality you should be approaching the guitar the same way you did on the first day you ever played because that feeling of mystery and excitement of learning and not knowing what to expect but all you do know is you wanted a guitar to play and that’s all that mattered! That passion and love never goes away and you still have it in your soul and heart but mentally your mind is giving you a hard time and making you think of guitar now as a chore instead your place to get away and actually be happy and at one with the instrument..instead of being excited to pick it up when you see it your mind automatically says well that means I’m gonna have to practice for 2-3 hours and do scales instead of getting home and literally running to the guitar when you get through the door..I only stopped playing for two months back in 2004..Dimebag is my #1 guitarist and hero so when Dimebag died on Dec 8th of 2004 I had dropped the guitar two months prior to his death..when I got home and seen it on the news I cried and picked up my guitar immediately and began jamming Cemetery gates..From that point on I told myself that it happened for a reason and dedicated myself to continuing his legacy and paying my respect by making sure people remember Dimebag and the plethora of amazing music he left us with..Within’ in a month I had progressed more than I did my entire first year..Don’t let it happen to you man and music is a gift that should be embraced and always fun..don’t take it to serious and go back to your roots and the reason you started playing to begin with..I always put an album on that inspires me on the way home from work so I’ll be it’ll the zone and makes me wanna play..I’m telling you though bro you should go pick your guitar up today and play..what’s the worst that could happen? You have a jam session and get to play some tunes! WIN WIN bro
@@LogAsp11 oh dude lately it’s been my entire life. I’m a bassist in a band, and I have like bass solos and stuff and I still play guitar for hours a day purely because I want to. It was something I was battling but I found an opportunity to make it my life and I took it. Time I’ve spent with my band members have been the best of my life and idk where I’d be without them. I have the same birthday as Dimebag, August 20th. I was born in 2005, so he was gone by the time I was born unfortunately. But I love Pantera and have his signature crybaby wah pedal and I have a dimeoflage too. Actually have a Pantera phone case.
Look at the amount of corrosion on his guitar
Looks sick
Yea it’s beautiful
It's the HR Giger (Alien) model so it's fully intentional
Pretty sure they were designed that way, but I'm not sure. I know it's an engraved HR Giger Ibanez, but I don't know for sure if the corrosion on the knobs is by design
it’s tone my guy
truly the most useful guitar technique channel, we love you Bernth, awesome content!
What a beautiful guitar. I've never seen anything like that before
Me neither. The design kinda looks like some of H.R. Giger's work, very cool!
Ibanez had a line of guitars that were designed by h.r. giger I think in the late 90s early 00s. I think there were rg and s series with that design actually.
@@thunderfox8896 sure is. Like the other person said, he did an RG series and S series. They come with the HR Giger cases as well. The RG version is absolutely insane
Hi Bernth, would you make a video to teach us how to change the pick slanting between two different strings?
I'm definitely making that first mistake, and I'm DEFINITELY checking out your channel now.
This guy accidentally tattooed his guitar when he was doing his arm😂
Not sure I follow the second tip. Should I switch that angle with every pick when trying to play as fast as you do in the sample (which I am not even close to being able to do btw.)?
I think it’s very rare to find a great guitarist who’s also a good teacher. This guy seems to have the magic combo.
He’s awesome, great technique and great musicality
You always teach me more in like 20-30 seconds than those 20 minutes tutorials
i actually do a circular motion when picking. Like i sort of drag my pick across my strings in a circle
I don't know why I'm watching this. I learned how to do a power chord 6 days ago.
I watched this guy go from a beginner to a true professional guitarist. Hes really amazing guitarist.
You dont talk about pick slanting much but i can see you doing it, make a vid?
me who plays the ukulele: ah yes understandable so i just *pluck* LMAO
poser
@@Noah_2008 lol sorry guess i’m a poser
@@Noah_2008 how do you know i’m a poser? do you have a ukulele?
This is one of the best videos I've seen on this thank you.
How about melody?

Think if it as up down might be the best tip I’ve heard. I sort of just vibrate my write and I just started learning sort of fast solos after a year and I always get caught not really picking strings on weird or uncomfortable runs. Imma go try it
Excellent explanation!
Very useful video! Your channel has taught me all the tips and techniques I need to get better at playing my guitar. I appreciate all the work and content you give us.
Bernth. You are a highly skilled and great guitarist, but I would love to see some technique videos for simple but chugging riffs or even melodic/ballad solos on your channel rather than just a lot of shred. Might be the wrong channel but I admire the amount of practice you've put in. It shows
I was searching for this exact video when i just started and couldnt find it xD
I'm just a beginner but I thought learning guitar was supposed to be a personal journey as in learn it your way and make it work YOUR way no?
If you switch between to angles, doesn't your movement start looks like the first bad habit? 🤔
blending picking and legato is hard
tank you bernth, my picking is getting better because of this video, so tanks
How far the gap among strings & fret board in your guitar ? @BERNTH
Me who uses no pick
(🤯200 iq🤯)
Thank you
This is so helpful, picking is what holds people back from shredding
Shredding is what holds people back from shredding. Sorry dude, you set it up and I had to hit it out the park. I'm 60 going on 6. Peace.
I’ve been playing guitar for some time now, and I always had trouble picking fast. Whenever I try, I end up either missing the string a bunch of times, or my pick catches and interrupts my flow with a big “TWANG!”
I never really stopped to think about whether the issue might be in my picking angle and/or hand motion. I’m so glad I found this video, and I’m going to start using your tips in my practice right away!
Thank you! 🙏
Thank you. Very helpful. Would you recommend the same pick holding and hand posture for acoustic picking and/or strumming or more of a David Gilmour type soloing, as one example, for electric.
I struggle getting your forearm angle and pick resting on forefinger "bridge" (curled in finger) because I have long arms and big hands. Holding pick this way, for example, caused constant tension on ligament to first finger. I tend to feel most comfortable with finger pointing toward point of pick using somewhere between the side and pad of my finger. But my accuracy never seems to increase.
In short are there any peers out there with long arms and big hands that may have a video specifically dealing with that situation?
Even my fretting hand, small or large radius necks don't seem to make any difference. My thumb is too long to put behind neck about even with second finger...impossible thumb position for me, so I do what everyone says not to and have it pointed toward headstock above fingers. 🤷♂️
If anyone else struggles with this please feel free to give any advice. I don't want to give up. I can play chords and keep time this way but mainly only on certain songs.
Love the guitar, I think it would make me a better player.
My hands are way to big to hold the pick like that and I keep muting the strings with my thump part of my palm 😢
Owh ok now i Got this Technique & Skill Thanks Mr Bernth... HELLO FROM MALAYSIA I BE YOUR FANS NOW,, BUT I DON'T REALLY LIKE A METAL SONG BUT I still listening a little Song From Band i love like Nu Metal.... BUT I WANT TO REQUEST A LITTLE SONG GENRE LIKE GRUNGE, OR INDIE, ALTERNATIVELY ROCK...
Thx dude
Don't mind me I am just watching what I'll never achieve. Started to late and don't have the time nor patience to practice enough. Still, I learn a lot of things in theory at least.
I don't sweep pick but this is good advice in general! Can confirm! Practice!
What level in smithing must i be to get a Daedric Guitar?!?!?!
With Legato I strongly advise to pick the first note very gently with the plectrum.
This ensures your first note will have the same dynamics as the hammer-ons and pull-offs (hopefully!)
something i found on my own but is a very good tip for people starting legato
Great tips. Killer video and you are a super fast player and very clean and smooth!!
What is your guitar??? Is it custom? Absolutely gorgeous
what is the solution of 3rd problem? i didn't get it
So hows friedman?
Thank you soo much my hand just stopped being tense after listening to your advice
the only thing holding me back with guitar is literally "MUSIC THEORY" which is for me like rocket science.... its hard to memorize the notes on all the strings for me. i wonder why all the big guitartubers never cover all of this theory stuff ...
its "ESSENTIAL"
was playing for years with my middle finger, ring and pinky hanging down after closing my hand and smaller picks i notice a big diffference in precision, accuracy, and my wrist not feeling wore out.
Is it bad that I use my thumb and pointer finger to do all the motion? Ive found a combination of that and the motion you are using gives stupid fast picking speeds but is it worth it?
I have almost 900 hours on guitar. I first picked the thing up almost 2 years ago. My picking is still s**t. I spend more time f*****g with my strap length and my picks than I do playing I think. Was helpful... Did subscribe. I need all the help I can get.
I've always had trouble picking faster. I think I use the first technique which is maybe why. But I have serious trouble coordinating my hands using other techniques.
For 1. think about Muhammed Suicmez, he played at extreme picking speeds while going extremely aggressive while picking, same with the insane genius riffs of his.
Hmmmm....smooth dynamics with string changes. That may be a large part of why it seems like my runs sound slow. 👍🏻 More great advice from the shred master!
I had a rhythm guitarist that literally could not upstroke everything had to be down so strumming sounded awful I made him a bassist so he could focus on one string at a time
Bass. Then the guy couldn't play pizzicato so i was out by that point I wont tolerate a bassist with a pick
This is actually good to know af
I just found all i needed in your channel sir .a huge fan of yours..from Darjeeling INDIA😇
There is no right or wrong... Just look how Eddie Van Hanlen hold his pick... I didn't know until I read about it... I always hold my pick like Eddie from the beginning... Felt natural to pick that way... Now i mix the middle and point finger like a glide the plektrum between the fingers... Very good if you skip the strings and doing big intervals... For me that is... Every hand is different... Relaxation and breathing right is more important as a human being... Like Bruce Lee said... Be water my friend... 🎼🎶🎵🎶🙏🏻
bro u gotta clean your guitar but good playing
I seem to only be able to down-pick, which makes playing some things really annoying.
Mastering smooth legato = 2-3 months; Mastering alternate-picking = lifetime??? Man, even when you get picking to sound good and fast, it just never feels right, no matter how many hours a day you do with a metronome. Maybe it's because I'm left-handed and play righty
Crazy, I started playing at the age of 12, I'm now 30. I just now today learned that pick angles are even a thing people think about.... I just play and have never once thought about pick angle, looking back in hindsight though I've always employed pick angle just never knew it was a thing.
I'm so sick of people trying to say what's the "proper" picking technique when you should really just use whichever technique requires the least movement possible. That's a really good tip for intermediate players, cause if I get that too much after 15 years, intermediate players might actually question themselves when they hear people push a 100% correct way to hold the pick. The reality is, everyone holds it differently and as long as you're not making it too hard to play, you'll quickly find efficient picking techniques that work for what you want.
I can't feel my thumb pointer and index. Any suggestions? It's been a problem since I started (11 when injured started at 13 playing), and I'd love a tip.
I have some neuropathy from cancer too. Appreciate you
ALWAYS focus on the fundamentals when learning techniques and have fun learning :)
I always love spicing up my practice time with doomy, drop A riffs so I can have a balance.
Marty friedman left the chat
I have to say. That's one really great looking guitar my man. Awesome! Nice demonstration on picking techniques. Thanks for sharing.cheers.
What about the right hand's palm. I have heard that your palm should not rest in the guitar bridge. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?
question
Dis you have to use a Compressor to have the consistent volume on the Legato exercise?
I don't quite understand what the difference between the first and second tip is. It seems like the dynamic angle is just a more subdued rotational picking motion. Not criticizing, just genuinely curious, as you're clearly playing far better than I can.
Me, an intellectual that tear my own fingers apart instead of using picks 😎
I don’t know…one picking angle like upstroke escape hasn’t limited the likes of Marty Friedman or Yngwie
And then there’s the whole Gypsy picking style
I haven’t used a pick since I’ve started playing guitar. I just strummed with my hand and did fingerstyle, now I’m trying to learn how to pick and I feel like I’m a new player again
You are very right for scales and doubling the position to get an even number
...which have been overdone and are not very musical. What about crosspicking...without the sweep.
Then you will need the curve to a certain degree
I'm having trouble finding where to place my right hand wrist. My past teacher told me to always rest it on the 6th string, and now it's a habit of mine, but I can't really pick strings this way.. where should it go? do I just not rest it anywhere?
So the first tip is dont alternate your picking angle, just go up and down with your wrist, and the second tip is you're going to have to switch between your picking angles..... uh, right, got it.
Hey man it might help people notice the subtleties of the techniques you showcase if you give a slower practical example as well as the full speed example. Unless this is the slowed down version. Knowing you, that could be entirely possible.
Clicked on the video for the picking tips, walked away jealous of that Giger Ibanez
So here’s a question.
What if your picking technique is your non dominant hand and you can’t really move your wrist much without tensing?
To grunge guitarists, fucking up is usually a good thing. Well, i actually dont know. Just me and Kurt like fucking up i guess.
What's yours favourite Band at this moment, BERNTH? I like Ghost very much!
I'm a rhythm guitarist for an indie band with no songs out yet and i want to get the right technique so i can make really heavy chugging/djent sounds. I'm not sure if this video will help ke or not.
Ibanez h r giger? The most beautiful guitars ever made
Can you elaborate on how the first two tips work together? To me it seems that if you add the picking angles from the second tip to the flat motion from the first tip, it inevitably leads to the curved motion that you say should be avoided.
I pick the strings with my fingers Like I move my fingers instead of my whole Wrists
It always feels like ive lost so much momentum trying to pick upward, once i get tremolos down I'll be able to play so many more songs
guitar players are such cappers ongod i watched this 1 million times n his picking angle does indeed NOT change when doing that fast run
Dude I was trying to pay attention to what you’re saying but that guitar is just too sick looking, can you repeat all of that?😅🔥
Just a *SUPER HUMAN PLAYER* Yeah that's all lol a *F#**#king* *BEAST*
Looking at this I actually have pretty c
Good picking technique
Im a guitarist but i use my middle finger and my thumb to strum the guitar
i dont even use a pick i can only play with my fingers
He seems like the most chill guy. I have a hard time imagining him angry.
Dudes dreads are fucking cool. 🔥
Also great guitar work bruh. 👌
As soon as he played the first note for the bad legato technique i thought of blink-182
Thanks to this, I dont play doom doom doom anymore but dumdumdum (much faster and with no mistakes
Bro this is something you learn by just playing guitar. I'm not sure there's a need for you to talk about it
Sounds like the intro of Top Gun at the beginning
I’ve always hated using picks, this video helped a lot. Thank you.
