  • Waiting to Exhale is a 1995 American romance film directed by Forest Whitaker (in his feature film directorial debut) and starring Whitney Houston and Angela Bassett. The film was adapted from the 1992 novel of the same name by Terry McMillan. Lela Rochon, Loretta Devine, Dennis Haysbert, Michael Beach, Gregory Hines, Donald Faison, and Mykelti Williamson rounded out the rest of the cast. The original music score was composed by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. The story centers on four women living in the Phoenix, Arizona area and their relationships with men and one another. All of them are "holding their breath" until the day they can feel comfortable in a committed relationship with themselves.

    My personal takeaway:
    1. Gloria found the love of a man when she thought she wasn’t worthy of it
    2. Robin sought so much approval/affection from men but she found the love of being a mother
    3. Savannah found self-satisfaction
    4. Bernie found true friendship in another man (being able to trust again) as well as self-sufficiency apart from being a man’s support system

    As a now 40 year old black man, this movie hits way different than when I saw it as a teenager. Obviously it was too "adult" for me at the time, but after going through, witnessing all the things my grandmother and mother both had to deal with when it comes to relationships, the complicated relationship i had with my negligent/alcoholic father, the themes in this film just hit at a whole other level. Looking back on it now i agree it's much more than a "man hating" film which is what i wrote it off as 20 some odd years ago. Yes there are some exaggerated negative portrayals of black men in this film, but it's like people forget the good ones in the film (Wesley Snipes, Gregory Hines).
    I actually resonated with Loretta Devine's storyline the most with her being a single mother and having her son's relationship take the place of a mate. I dealt with that and it absolutely stifled my growth as a young adult. I was one of the lost late bloomers, living at home in my early 20's with no reason to leave type dudes because my grandmother created a co-dependent environment.
    Anyway, classic film and the soundtrack is pretty much Babyface' Magnum Opus in my book. If anyone ever questions who was the King of R&B music in the 90's (since alot of people will say R. Kelly), if Babyface is your argument than this soundtrack is your proof.

    • @starcherry6814
      @starcherry6814 Год назад

      What advice would you give to a young man in a Co dependent relationship w/ his mother?
      It’s hard to see so much potential just wasted

    • @anthonyanderson9303
      @anthonyanderson9303 Год назад +1

      @@starcherry6814 First off, I would ask what stage of life are you in? How old are you? Are you currently working? I'm asking because these are all things that would help determine what your next steps should be. If you are still living at home, I'd say start taking the proper steps to get into a position to move out. Even if that means finding a roommate to do it with (which btw, there's nothing wrong with). The dynamics of your relationship will change vastly once you're not under their roof anymore.
      Now they'll be some resentment at first, even anger and a sense of betrayal. I dealt with all that with my grandmother at first. But in the long run your relationship will become stronger.
      I hate to say this, but if your situation is anything like mine was, then truth be told your mother doesn't respect you. She may love you I have no doubt, but there's a difference. She especially doesn't respect you as an adult. In fact I'm willing to bet she doesn't even see you as an adult. That's just cold honesty I'm sorry. Moving out and (again, if possible) is the first major step in changing the dynamics of your relationship.
      if that's not possible right now, at the very least (and again I don't know your financial situation), you should contribute something financially. Whether that means rent money, paying a few bills, or even groceries. Something that says you contribute to the living situation. Even in my early 20's living at home i paid rent (doesn't matter how much just as long as you both have a mutual understanding), the cable bill, and my part of the car insurance (yea I was under her insurance still). These sorts of things will speak to your growing independence. Again, only do what you can afford but it's a sign of your growth in the right direction.

      Good advice. I will try to pass it on

    • @anthonyanderson9303
      @anthonyanderson9303 Год назад

      @@starcherry6814 Another thing I'd add is watch the company you keep. There's a saying that goes "show me your 5 closest friends around you and I'll show you the kind of person you are". He needs to associate himself with other men who are making something of themselves. Not saying they gotta have money or anything, but drive and direction. If he's hanging around a bunch of loafers with no ambition, then ultimately that's what he'll be as well.
      And furthermore, no female worth their salt will want anything to do with him either you know? I went through my phase of bad women before I met my wife. Of course if and when he does find "the one", his mother will be threatened by her as well and most likely bad mouth her cuz in her mind he's replacing her.

I have 2 say I can kinda relate 2 Bernadine's story. My 12 year marriage came 2 n end. Yes I felt the hurt, the anger, the feeling of did u really love me. Then meeting someone that let u know life goes on. If u love woman @ all, then had 2 be happy 4 these women. I have say tho, Savannah's mom was doin 2 much. I never watched this movie as a child, so it has no nostalgic feelings for me. So while watching as an adult. I utterly hate it. I hate that the female characters constantly engaged with married men while the movie demonized Bernadette’s husband’s affair. I hated that it was so hyper focused on white women, for example Bernadette’s husband leaving her for a white woman, Bernadette’s bar guy being married to a white woman, and Troys speech about why “hood brothas” like white women. Meanwhile white men nearly don’t exist in the movie, and it’s as if the women’s only option are black men, specifically black married men. Gloria is the only character who seemed to have autonomy but was just too pressed for her ex husband. The rest of them, I genuinely do not know why they chose to just bind themselves to dust. It’s hard to watch obviously beautiful women with unlimited options be portrayed as so limited and desperate.

    I’m so late but Omggg how I love this movie ! One of my top favs for years !! I love the many points you made and even though the characters were not depicted in the best light and may have came across as desperate or foolish this movie however will forever be timeless because you can find a little bit of yourself in each character. I also feel some people have to remember this is a 90’s movie don’t completely watch this from a present day kind of lenses or era. It was different times of course back then but still I think most people can still resonate with this film hints why it’s so timeless. ✨ A couple of things I love about this movie is the Excellent acting. You literally forget The Whitney Houston is starring in this movie because of how well she played her role. And of course Angela basset with the iconic scenes that will forever be talked about and praised! The important deep rooted conversation, topics, and emotional traumas that were brought up in this film was so well put together to where it didn’t feel to over whelming or too hard to understand. You could actually empathize with the characters to an extent. Another great thing about this film was the sound track my God is so good & nostalgic to listen too ofc if you like that kind of genre of music. The outfits and hair beautiful. But overall I think the main moral of this story was based on sisterhood and not so much having to hold your breath waiting on the perfect love story to come because when you have your Sistas by your side there’s nothing you can’t do. They all had there own issues and problems they were going through but at the end of the day when they needed a shoulder to cry on or someone to lift them up they always had each other no matter the disappointment they faced in there love lives with men. The song ‘ Count on me by Whitney Houston’ was a great song that was created for the movie because it described the sister hood the characters had with each other well. Will forever love this movie. Of course everyone has different perspectives and views things differently I just respect the movie in its entirety and the times in which it was made. Classic 💋♥️

    I've heard you break down three movies these past few days but listening to you break down THIS (while I clean up for New years) was like laughing with a homegirl over a classic. The quotes and 🤤 sounds got me rolling 😂. I immediately had to subscribe. Have a great 2023

    I was drawn to this book, as a young girl and when I fell in love with Scottsdale, AZ. I reread it from time to time. However, yes I need part 2: Getting to Happy, made into a movie or a series.
    The soundtrack is chef's kiss 😘.

    The Passport brother is Angela Bassett s son who was raised by his mother in a college preparatory environment. Gone to college raised to love black women but once he started looking for a wife. He was rejected for a thug as a young man. Having being raised to adore and love black women not understanding why the sistas reject him. After decades of being overlooked because his mother taught him to be educated he is professional and childless he decides to go over seas to find a wife because there were no black women engineered for him. This is the Passport brother of today. So when black woman call black men dusty etc. Do you include Angela Bassett s little boy?

      No, I think he goes to Morehouse, pledges Alpha and heads to graduate school. Then he marries a pretty Black geek from a small town. She graduates from Howard. You're welcome 😊

      Wait what type "sistas " he was approaching in the 1st place?
      I find it hard to believe most educated or same environment "sista" will want an thug or poor.
