I did that this morning actually as I'd woken up and couldn't get back to sleep so went downstairs to my laptop for an hour or two. The dream ended with lucidity - though in this instance it wasn't particularly intense and didn't last long.

Lucid dreaming is really very powerful, to the extent that people who aren't able to do it wouldn't believe what is really possible with it, so don't be so keen to write it off. I am able to lucid dream and you can pretty much do what you like to the world around you, in an almost psychic/telekinetic way. You can summon anything you can imagine into existence. It really is like when Neo realises he can control reality in the Matrix. They sneak up on you though, it isn't really possible to decide *when* a dream becomes lucid, it just sorts of happens. (tip: get into the habit of staring at your hands during your waking life and saying to yourself "I know I am dreaming, this is a dream, and I am in control of everything" - if it becomes enough of a habit you'll eventually start doing it in your dreams. The real challenge then is not immediately waking up when you realise you're in a lucid dream). As an on/off insomniac I also find I am more likely to drop into a lucid dream when I am sleep deprived/extremely tired when I go to sleep, which sort of goes hand in hand with sleeping three hours a night, which is also isn't inconceivable. Sometimes that is all I get, for weeks on end. Bruce Lee has gone on record saying he would train martial arts whilst lucid dreaming, and he was able to move much more quickly than he could whilst he was awake
