Leominster: Original 1950's Payne Traction Elevator (C) @ Leominster Hospital

  • We get a very close look at one elevator that used to be very easy to find, prior to the 2000 hospital expansion, and floor plan rearangement, at Leominster Hospital, Leominster, Massachusetts.
    First, we get to see the original building (built in 1913), and the first expansion (built in 1931), and I point out where each had an elevator. I then show you, from the main entry, how to get there (I cheated, but I didn't on the way back out).
    The original elevator was on the leftmost corner, so in the 1931 expansion, they put it's elevator on the far right corner, making a bay of 2 elevators. This also explains why the call buttons stand proud of the wall the elevators are on, since that's where the original building ended (brick wall).
    We get to look at the classic, original 1950's fixtures, including the hall stations. All the lights do work, but since the elevator is there when we view them, they will not light up.
    We go for several rides, and watch everything, from the "Classic Leveling", to the shaft being lit by the window up top, through the upper vents, to enjoying the sounds of the relay-driven system.
    Another =MUST-RIDE ELEVATOR= in the Fitchburg/Leominster area!

    A lot of people don't care for hospitals, but they are fairly easy to record elevators in, epsecially hidden ones like this one.
    Of course, fancy hotels usually have nicer-looking elevators (the Four Points I recorded in, not-so-much). I'll get those, whenever I come across any.

    Isn't it?!
    Bet you can't wait to go there, after viewing this.

    Since this elevator has been in hiding for the last 10 years, I think this elevator will remain as it is for years to come.
    A good sign it'll stay, is that this WAS modernized. They put an infaraed sensor in the door, and most likjely, updated the safeties.

    Same here, except for the Westy and Payne thing.
    Hope it's up, and you have a lot of fun!

    Wow. Sad.
    At least it runs MUCH better that the chime sounds.
    I've noticed a US running well is a very rare find. :)

    This one is...still on the elevator. :)
    Hidden, and close-by. You should get a plastic container to store them in, so they don't get (very) dusty (if you haven't already).

    Guard it well!

    It has been modernized, with the infared sensor. Other than that, I hope it does stay this way, now that it's pretty much hidden from regular use.

    U.S. Elevator, or "US", for short. They modded a Payne, that I walked through to get Elevator C.
    If I remember correctly, I think Surgery (the OR's) are on the 2'nd floor. I had surgery once, a long time ago, and I ultimately was taken to the 2'nd floor.

    It does make noise, the new Flip catches it, albeit it is fairly quiet.
    A lot of places where Seniors use, tend to have long door-open states, since they cannot move as fast.

    I've heard similar chimes, but not struggling to maintain a pitch.
    Is that common?

    @patricknedz
    Yay.
    I drove a little out of the way to ride new GeN2's at another hospital, but the building was stull under construction, and those were limited to 2 floors. Yay.
    I feel your pain, although it wasn't as bad.
    Those 3'rd party component Westies tend to be crap. Then again, some originals are as well.

    @georgef551 What's a US? And why is the second floor locked?

  • @patricknedz

    @georgef551 well I drove an hour away to see that elevator after someone told me about it, and I get there and its broken, I was MAD!!

      @georgef551  10 лет назад

      Sadly, it is no more. It's a mechanical room on each floor.

    I have a bad feeling that elevator C will be modernized. :(

    KONEelevatorman111 ,
    Worse than modding, it's gone.
