Wow nice work Adam, here's some history In the 1930s Nazi sympathizers built a refuge in the Pacific Palisades for a cost of 4 million Herr Schmidt, Winona and Norman Stephens, and their followers occupied a self-contained stronghold in what is now Rustic Canyon between Sullivan Ridge and Will Rodgers State Park. Murphy Ranch was designed to serve as a hold out for fans of the Third Reich waiting for America to fall to the Nazis. Instead, the ranch was raided by U.S. authorities and closed in 1941. The abandoned buildings were transformed into an artists’ colony in the 60s and 70s, but were abandoned after the Mandeville Canyon Fire in 1978. Today the grounds of Murphy Ranch are uninhabited, dilapidated, and covered in graffiti. The city of Los Angeles now owns the property and it is considered a very popular hiking trail. The city of Los Angeles was planning on removing all of the structures. No one is sure when they'll do it though.
Why didn't you show more of the main floor of the building? And what is the dark secret that the title refers to? You find some interesting places, but it seems you spend more time clowning around than showing the actual place. Telling us some of the history would have been more interesting than talking about glamorous trees.
***** Thank you for the reply. Were they painting a mural, or tagging? (I hate vandals!) BTW, there was a video you did about an abandoned motel that I can't locate now. Toward the end you pointed to a bush with red berries and asked if anyone knew what it was. I tried to find the video so I could comment that the plant was staghorn sumac. Thanks for the videos.
The Murphy Ranch is a ranch built in Rustic Canyon, Los Angeles in the 1930s by Winona and Norman Stephens,[1][2] who were sympathizers of the Silver Legion of America.[3] The owner of record in 1933 was Jessie M. Murphy.[2] Designed as a base for Nazi activities in the U.S.,[4] it was intended to be capable of being self-sustaining for long periods. The compound had a water storage tank, a fuel tank, a bomb shelter, and various outbuildings and bunkers. The estate's main gate was designed by Paul Williams, a well-known African-American architect in the Southern California area. On Monday, December 8, 1941, the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, local police occupied the compound and detained members of the 50-strong caretaker force.[5] As of 1990, it was abandoned and in a state of disrepair, and covered in graffiti.[2] The site is currently owned by the city of Los Angeles. As of 2015, the ranch buildings were still standing, despite repeated proposals for their demolition.[6]... just a quick history, girls not included,
"According to Los Angeles Magazine, LA’s Department of Recreation and Parks has temporarily closed the area to demolish the ruins of Murphy Ranch, which will be completed on February 23, 2016." - Doesn't seem like they finished in time.
+Whiffles The government is a joke. It can't do anything anymore except harass law-abiding citizens and make stupid laws...The officials make hundreds of thousands of dollars and are less competent than a guy who works the drive-up window at Burger King...His job is ten times harder...
+SuperEvilC They did a study of people going into surgery, and some weren't given rooms with a blank wall, some were given rooms with a window looking out at nature (trees and such) and some were given rooms with pictures of nature-the anxiety levels of the patients with the windows and the pictures were equally low (compared to the control group with no nature scenery), and this improved their surgical outcomes! I think its so cool that nature has this power, and that we can even get the benefits from images of nature without having to have actual nature present! However, exercise is great for depression too so getting out in nature might benefit you as well (if that isn't something you already do...)
+Russell Cruse I am so grateful to everyone who posts stuff on youtube...I have lots of medical issues and really need to feel connected to the outside world.
Just watched the Documentary and learned more about your life, appreciate what you do 10 times more now and glad to see you live life freely and if their ever comes a money concern, let us know !
Never heard of this place before...but I have to say that is one insane stairway! I say go at night near or on Halloween and make it a true spooky event!
Too bad the taggers have been out there ruining things. People need to accept graffiti isn't art. I don't care how talented you might actually be. Graffiti is vandalism and vandalism isn't art. Yes, that means you too, Banksy. For the record, I hate onions. "The cat's out of the bag" is related to "a pig in the polk." Reportly people would sell cats in bags (a polk) claiming they were piglets. Then when you opened the bag - the cat was let out. That being said, this looked like it was fun to explore. Stairs and all.
My friend mentioned this place to me awhile back, had no idea about it. I was surprised you didn't do your usual detailed historical facts but still a great video.
I think it's a law that to explore abandoned or unique places that you must have a minimum of a case of spray paint with you so you can pretty it up for others to enjoy. SHEESH!
Many blunts were smoked there, many bottles of 40's drank there. You should of went down farther there's a self sustaining machine shop and another abandoned house that is intact. They fenced it all off because it got sketchy at one point I'm surprised they took the fence down.
+3enjoy3 I agree! ridiculous! there is this awesome pace with big rocks where I live,-its hard to get to and really a neat lookout on the side of the mountain, but its covered in graffiti...would look so much nicer natural!
***** No Problem! I love your personality! You can call me Spencer by the way. I thought of this youtube name because I live in my Rv and pretty soon going to start an Rv cooking and travel channel...I thought ForkInTheRoad was super clever!
that faucet 100% fooled you. Also, I lived in Southern California for years, and didn't know half this stuff or locations you go to, so I am living vicariously through your videos as I don't live there anymore.
This Ranch should be a symbol to everyone of what will happen to your home, your neighborhood, your town, when things go bad, and there is no law..... thugs, trash, lowlifes, just coming in, tagging, stealing, destroying.... Coming soon to a neighborhood near you... I have been watching for years. America is not getting better. More jobs going away, more people on the government dole. More uneducated kids that schools will not expel, and cops don't have room to hold.... America is a failed experiment. If you have money, buy gold, and get a solid exit plan. By 2025, or 2030, life here will be a memory. it will NEVER get better with the direction our Government is moving in. It will only continue to get worse, until All of America is one giant slum, with 80% Unemployment, and no real law to help you.

I want to go see this place, but with all those steps, and my beat up old knees, I think my drone will have to shoot most of the video. Nice clip, Adam!
This reminds me of the abandon zoo in LA. My boyfriend and me traveled up there stopping by a ton of places to get there. It wasn't so abandoned, just this this. Tons of people everywhere! Even to the point someone was filming I guess a movie for school or whatever. Lol it's cool to see but was super disappointed! Glad I can see this video get to see the place but not be disappointed like I was with the zoo.

Man I love the mountains in and around LA. Topanga is another awesome area. Adam you should check out Topanga and do a vlog sometime. There's a few quirky and interesting places to see.
The Murphy Ranch is a ranch built in Rustic Canyon, Los Angeles in the 1930s by Winona and Norman Stephens, who were sympathizers of the anti-semitic, anti-communist Silver Legion of America. The owner of record in 1933 was Jessie M. Murphy. Yes I googled it, but my family goes back ages in California. Red Bluff to Lasen and back to Sacramento. My father was stationed in So Cal 1960's at Point Magoo and Dad's last station was Miramar Naval Air sstation out by San Diego
The mother of the Nazi sympathizer put the property deed in her name and all building went through her name "Murphy". At the time the FBI raided this camp, nazi Schmidt or Schmitt was on the property- he was instructing the couple what to build. Everyone arrested on the grounds were charged except the Nazi. He disappeared. The "main" building was the engine room. That building has been boarded up and most of the others removed. Evidently, too many rescues led to the decision to remove most of the camp. This place was used (after the Nazis were removed) as an artist commune.
Oh and a tip to anyone taking hikes in that area, most of the trails are filled with yellow flowers that are our state flower and picking them is a felony.
5000 steps were climbed . What a day
+adamthewoo Great work! Who needs a Gym when you are doing videos like these right? Keep up the great work.
Hi Adam :)
+adamthewoo Good on u!
that looked like enough exercise for the year with that many steps to go down than back up lol

Dude, me too! (3 years later)
Thanks for putting yourself out there for our entertainment. Keep up your amazing work.
I'm interested in what might have been on the property BEFORE Feb. 23, 2016 and what government agency/s were involved.
Just watched the Documentary and learned more about your life, appreciate what you do 10 times more now and glad to see you live life freely and if their ever comes a money concern, let us know !
That building looks like an old Taco Bell.
You nomadic neanderthal...

Cool quote on the side of the first building you guys went to....Percy Bryce Shelley. Ozymandius, one of my favorite poems. Thanx Adam, nice vid )
The Autocorrect got you! We know it's not "Bryce"! Stupid autocorrect.

I can think of something I'd like to delve into, it has pink hair and long braids.
AaronAlso have fun with those false rape claims
Thanks for uploading Adam! New camera footage looking really good
it is such a shame that people have to go and mess up these places with such graffiti
+KaijuProductions I agree! Idiots, if they were in Singapore, they would be caned!!
Awsome video Adam hope you never stop making videos.
You should do a video where you go to the old abandoned Tatooine sets from the Star Wars movies.
+The Muppet Fan that would be incredible
+The Muppet Fan Aren't those somewhere in North Africa?
I dont think ISIS would lime that, seeing as how they took over the sight in North Africa.
RadSalacan a year later I know, but they are in Morocco. Which yes is North Africa. Actually the most northern part on the west side of Africa.
Tunisia isn't conveniently located

Looks like a lot of fun!!!! Very beautiful and mesmerizing place !
Why does everything have to be covered in graffiti?
because it's California
Thought your comment said "everyone"
Most of them are the equivalent of "____ was here"
Because the cities don't supply a legal place to do art
+3enjoy3 I agree! ridiculous! there is this awesome pace with big rocks where I live,-its hard to get to and really a neat lookout on the side of the mountain, but its covered in graffiti...would look so much nicer natural!

Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."[4]

The Murphy Ranch is a ranch built in Rustic Canyon, Los Angeles in the 1930s by Winona and Norman Stephens, who were sympathizers of the anti-semitic, anti-communist Silver Legion of America. The owner of record in 1933 was Jessie M. Murphy. Yes I googled it, but my family goes back ages in California. Red Bluff to Lasen and back to Sacramento. My father was stationed in So Cal 1960's at Point Magoo and Dad's last station was Miramar Naval Air sstation out by San Diego
The pink hair caught my eye but the yoga pants captivated my full attention
Adam you find some crazy places to visit
I think it's getting really popular because there's a lot of those "haunted/disturbing places in California you should(n't) visit" going around
Scumbags destroy everything.
