Last year I switched from a road bike with 30mm tires to a gravel bike with 40mm. So happy with the additional comfort and option to ride off road. I can keep up on the group rides and often chuckle at the roadies going around every little bump.
But isn't that the case with Shimano brakes? I moved from Shimano 105 to Tektro R559 and sure, they are not as great as 105 and def not as good as Ultegra, they can take upto 40 mm tires with ease.
I think 700 x 30c or 32c is the sweet spot for our roads here in Cebu! I'm using the Continental GP5000 S TR. Expensive, but super happy with it so far!
I think I responded to another video of yours saying I was on the big tire bandwagon. I run 35mm rene herse bon jons on my synapse. Also have a steel road bike (Ritchey Road Logic) that I love. Unfortunately, the max tire size is 30mm, though I was able to fit 32s. Still, I want bigger. Comfort & stability without a loss of speed with the right bigger tires.

Yup. Here in Tarlac (terrible road surfaces) 30's and 32's are the way to go. I use 5000 STR's in the dry season/racing and Maxxis Refuse 32's in the rainy season (no flats at all). I can see going to 35's when I get a little older and care about speed less. Also, tubeless is the best option for the Philippines. Small pieces of wire don't even require a stop, the sealant takes care of them.

@illarica It can be, especially if you like climbing. There's decent riding all over Hong Kong, and it's almost all hilly. Like the 4K climb to the top of the highest peak, Tai Mo Shan, which will definitely get your blood pumping. The road loop around Hong Kong Island is also fun - 50K on tarmac and 2-3 reasonably serious hills. There is quite a bit of rural riding. I live on the South side of Lantau Island, which isn't very developed and the roads are mostly concrete. We still have wild cattle and water buffalos wandering around. The climbs are also pretty brutal. For example, on Strava, the road from the south side to the northern side of the Island is called "The Beast!" My dad always said "Hills build character." You build plenty of it if you ride in Hong kong. If you are ever in town, I'll find you a bike and take you on a tour. Cheers
Tbh I use 28mm tyres on my roadbike and fixed gear at the moment and 35mm tyres on my gravel bike it´s mostly smooth flat gravel around here. I did find that the 28mm tyres were significantly faster than my previous 32mm tyres from my road bike like about 2km/h to 4km/h faster somtimes even more maybe 30mm would be even faster but considering my rims are pretty wide im probably closer to something like 29mm well and I don´t want to buy new tyres now cuz I just switchted them out a couple months ago. Theyre probably also faster because they are just higher quality tyres compared to the standart bontrager ones. But also were I live the roads are relativly smooth nothing compared to your conditions that on road you showed would be horrible on 28mm anyhow great video.

Our roads here in the Philippines are hardly ever perfectly smooth asphalt and mostly bumpy cement roads. I think 28c is still too thin for this and 30c to 32c is better if not perfect.
Update lng sir sa durability ng Kenda 700*30c tires mo. I hope they last. Thinking of switching to 30c. I use Innova 700*28c and they are a champ. OKs pa after 1 year of Abt 4 weekly 60km rides but the added comfort of 30c is much desired. The limits of my Rim brake Hybrid setup.
Please don't use that NorCal video as your deciding factor. That was far from scientific. You can't just put 3 different sizes of tires on a wheel and use that as a gauge. A wheel works best with a certain size tire, due to how the air interacts with the system. By the time Jeff got to 34, he had a lightbulb shape and killed the airflow.

Even just Sora does well. Got lucky, on FB with DA br7800 Silver Calipers in pristine condition for 2.5k and they stop so well😅

I have Surly MS with 700x32 Conti gt5000 AS-TS and it is very fast. Love it. I think it's a sweet spot 100%.

Minimum of 32mm for me as well. Though my current tires, the Donelly LGG 28c pop out to 30-31mm on my 20mm rims.

A gravel-cross 46t chainring x 11t sprocket will get spun out easy on those tires. Tried it with 32c's, hard to compete on the flats.

I swear 700x32c is the sweetest spot for all type of road ( not too fast on rough road though but its capable )
