This is real deep. As a korean, it’s eye-opening to hear explanation about Korea in an objective view, which is why anthropology exists i guess. Never thought it this way - that the current madness of Korea (putting material wealth over everything else) is a product of the past dictatorship regime and authoritarian culture. You are absolutely sharp and well-spoken. I agree with your conclusion that we should fight against this Putin madness which leads to tragic society like korea. Based on my experience, Living in korea is like a war because you should constantly work hard to compete with others (school, job, etc) to survive like you said. Suicidal rate is one of the highest and it is no surprise.

I wonder could it be that Occupation is not really thought of because most of the SK younger society are given very little pay to nothing to gain experience? Is that what they call Passion Pay? I hear how so many companies get young trainees and train them, but the trainees are under contract and don't see their family for years while being trained especially to be an IDOL. It seems like when the trainees are lucky enough to make the final cut and debut they spend the first couple years working exhausting hours showcasing their talents to payback the company that house, feed and trained them without a cent in their pockets. I have even heard that while training the trainees are not allowed to have part-time jobs. I don't know about other industries, but it is like you are an apprentice and getting paid in experience. So I don't know if it is necessarily that SK youth don't value their family and friends, but inorder to survive and make something of themselves they have to sacrifice their health, can't have a relationship and be away from their family and friends in order to gain experience and respect. I think when the younger generation make it or start getting paid or compensated for all their years of work some began to splurge on materialistic things as a sign that they made it. I mean honestly who don't like nice things and majority of us no matter where you are from like to buy nice things, but if you weren't born with a Silverspoon in your mouth I don't think it is as easily accessible to SK youth. It doesn't seem like they can obtain money as easily as maybe an American can? In America as a young person you can earn minimum wage if your parents give permission for you to work, but you have more freedom to hang out with family and friends and basically have a social life. You can splurge on somethings you like because you are paid with cash while gaining experience at your job. If I am wrong in anything that I said or totally in left field please correct me because I am just an outside observer looking in.
Your example of the Idol world is correct, I believe. So they use occupation as a TOOL to get to “material well-being”, which doesn’t mean being materialistic. Simple basic material things that they want out of life like being able to afford food on the table, clothes on their backs (for winter, summer, etc), their own homes, their own car, being able to enjoy hobbies (which require material equipment), even being able to travel (even local travel) can give them a sense of security and well-being. Being able to give their parents these things, can give them a sense of security.

Material well-being doesn’t mean just being materialistic though. Material well-being ranks high in a dictatorship environment because it covers having shelter (your home), food on the table, transportation, clothes on your back. These are basic material necessities! Just to live. So he means that each person there cares about being able to secure a safe place to live in, to be able to put food on the table, and buy clothes for appropriate seasons (winter, summer, etc). You have to look at it that way. They will sacrifice health and family to secure those basic necessities for their everyday life. Because they have to struggle and hustle each day just to have them. That’s what a dictator does to its common people.
When people lose their self awareness the run after meterialistic things to fill their void and society and the corporations is exploiting this state of being and leading whole humanity to earth's destruction.

Could I request a topic on why Koreans seem to be the only country in the world that cares about age? Down to the day of birth seems to be a defining factor for seniority. Why though 🤔
Interesting, greetings from The Netherlands 👍 Yes we are helping Ukraine to win the war and Ukraine's accession to the EU and NATO membership. If Putin is finally caught then Europe will have to play an important role to democratize Russia, it will take a while to break the Russian passivisme mindset into becoming politically open to talk about issues especially in Russia. Regarding South Korea being authoritarian shadow, i hope you can overcome it eventually.
Is it really that hard to live in Korea or do Koreans just tie their self-worth to how much money they make? For example is it difficult to work an entry level job and still be able to afford basic things like rent and food?
So many young Korean men seem like they prefer authoritarian, Putin style governments. It’s not such a stretch to imagine the country could tragically fall back to an autocratic style system.
Economically Korea is 4 to 5 decades ahead of Ukraine. Culturally, Ukraine can modernize and westernized a lot more quickly. Maybe 2 decades. If they can became a liberal democracy and follow a free market economy for example of the Baltic countries or, let's say, Slovakia and Czekia. This would be a 1 decade of very hard work and then much better times. Korea is an East Asian country and the culture is fundamentally different from the West, Korea might never be like America. And to be honest, it is for the best. America, Canada, and Britain are going through horrible political friction. Especially in Canada, everyone is doomer, all politicians fucking suck. I have seen professors preach communism and in my next class a professor preach a violent revolution to impose a pseudo putin regime.
Rapid development, rapid growth, and rapid technology advancement. Are we still pretending material well being is nonexistent even in the west? In the former Eastern Block nations, the masses have been allowed to travel abroad and live or study in Western society, and once they’ve felt and touched it, they don’t want to live in the past, only move forward. South Koreans from both the homeland and overseas know and understand when the parents immigrated to foreign lands and see that its hard overseas, but they also don’t say it but it’s worse in their native homeland. Nothing is easy in South Korea because it’s continuously on rapid development phase, no one cares and wants to think about how it because they know it’s sad, and a materialistic society with a rich culture but South Koreans bringing the drama dirt that exists everywhere else. I was born in russia and let me tell you you dint fucking know how lucky you are to not live in russia currently
I wont talk to long but (if I say current stuff in Ukrainian is war instead of special military operation I will be in jail fro up to 15 years)
that should speak for itself
but beyond that
couple of years ago I was living in Europe (Czech Republic )and I was traveling a lot in Europe
and met many kinds of people
and listen as much as I complain about life there are people who would love to deal with my problems
I met people from 3ld world counties
I met people from counties that at war
like Syria Iran Somalia Uganda (other different African countries ) Indonesia, Latin America Yemen
and some of their stories showed me
like my best friend is living in Germany but he is Somalian immigrant
he was born in Somalia but he do not remember it because he left when he was 3 in 2002 year
but from his parents it was horrible
there are constant terroristic attacks, explosions , dead bodies on the streets , they waking up from bullet sounds
most do not have basic human needs like water or electricity not to mention internet
no good education or healthcare, people dying at 55 yo
like these military rebels are the worst
they can shoot dead whole village and nothing will happened to them
cuz no one care no police no army no government
its most corrupt place on earth
freedom of speech do not exist if you do police will come and torture the shit out of you until you shut up
like sexual crimes are super big
and somethings these rebels recruiting a kids 13 yo to shoot and kill and of they refuse they might kill you and all your family
or torture you until you agree
so its hell on earth
so next time you will complain about Korea
think about people in these counties and be grateful for shit you have because some (most) do not have even basic stuff that you use everyday like shower and toilet
speaking of suisicide
I also knew a guy who was born in Czech Republic
but his parents are from Caracas venesuela
another branch of hell on earth
this place has 3rd highest murder rate on earth
the gangs control entire areas of the city
army and government cooperate with them
if you make a wrong turn at night you might get shot
go to store at night your are very brave for that
if you piss off someone powerful in government you and all your lived ones will be killed and bared and no one will give a shit
free speech also do not exist government will quickly shut you up if you do
also lack of good medicine good education and food supply because of socialism
most kids want to become hitman or drug lord instead of something good
many are literally starving while Maduro has no problem eating 3000 dollar meat
however the suiside Leven in venesuella is 10th lowest in the world
so thing about that next time you will say how korea is like war
