  • With drug addiction and overdose rampant in Seattle, how can we change our mindset to make progress on this topic? Brad Finegood shares methods of how we can view addiction with intent to help. Brad Finegood is a Strategic Advisor in Public Health in Seattle & King County. He recently served as a co-chair of the King County Heroin and Prescription Opiate Task Force and was the Alcohol and Drug Coordinator for King County. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Michigan State University and his Master’s Degree in Counseling with a Specialty in Alcohol and Drug Abuse from Western Michigan University. He has worked in the behavioral health field for 20 years. Most importantly he is the sibling and survivor of a younger sibling that passed away from an overdose. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Though I know there's various aspects to recovery, I wanted to encourage you to genuinely encounter Christ Who loves to heal and come along side. He wants real relationship. He'll forgive sin through His payment for them so you can be an authentic child of God if you'll receive it. If you've already taken that initial step of receiving forgiveness and becoming His child, turn to Him whole heartedly and see what He'll do. His Word says He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Two of my best buddies died of OD back in 2021 and 2022. I’m 2 months clean and now I wanna dedicate my time to help and set awareness of drugs use. As a 23 years old, I personally have set my priority to retire my immigrant parents who are currently working in a warehouse 40+ hours a week. It breaks my heart when I see them tired and hear them getting ready to go to work in this cold weather. Our generation needs to do better. God bless everyone, we can do this💪❤️🙏

The power of healing its in you , in your soul and mind . The constant remembrance of God will illuminate your mind and you’ll find comfort and happiness. Every addiction can be cured through the power of your mind but you need someone with experience to guide you through the process. Every time the temptation is coming connect your mind to God and and the desires will perish

a lot of times you gotta hit rock bottom to learn how to ask for help...my rock bottom was waking up literally in the gutter after a 2 week drinking bender after every single friend i had passed me up to let me sleep on their couch. when i woke up i was sitting next to a catholic homeless shelter and the priest who ran it literally thought i was homeless because i hadnt showered or shaved in 2 weeks....when i told him that i had a job and a home he just looked at me, put his hand on my shoulder and said "brother, if you dont get help now, you're not gonna have those for much longer" and that was the kick in the pants i needed...thanks father Gregory....i owe you my life

I forgot how belittling it is to not have your provider to believe anything you say. It's NOT a distrust or disrespect. I personally reject any pain control drugs. I don't respond well to them.
Even so, it was a challenge to avoid being tested at my physiatrist office. The clerk said they would NOT treat me unless I complied.
I insisted given I had no use for their drugs. I manage through lifestyle-- food, ice, heat, . . .
Finally, I gained access to the appointment. All that to say, it's not a matter of trust; it's a matter of policy.
Still-- not easy to deal with no matter the case.

I work at an opioid treatment center that is in the process of opening right now, and it is jarring how difficult it is to get these programs up and running. The criteria you have to meet, security protocols that need to be in place, prescription monitoring, too much to list. The UA's and pill counts aren't because the people don't trust you, it's the result of a system that is broken and perpetuates the stigma that addicts are bad people. We treat those who suffer from addiction like criminals because it's what we have been taught to do. We are trying to change this perception, but we are fighting an uphill battle. Hang in there, I hope you are well.

    • @dillerdime39
      @dillerdime39 2 года назад +1

@@codybennett244 I appreciate that, and your willingness to open a clinic and help people while fighting upstream against all the protocols and other stuff you listed. Yeah I agree, it's not the individuals who don't trust us, it's the system they work in that devalues people with addiction. Everyone has rules to follow and have to answer to employers. But again, good luck with your clinic and thank you for choosing to help people!

Great talk - but we also must agree to continue to treat people with chronic pain. These people are being kicked off their medications, which they NEED, because of others who misuse meds.
People with untreatable injuries and/or illnesses NEED those opioid medications in order to even function.
There HAS to be a middle ground somehow - where people who are addicted can get the help they need, without condemning chronic pain patients to unbelievable daily pain.

We're not better than Americans, but the information I'm randomly confronted with says that USA has the biggest opioid epidemic in the world which many doctors keep much alive by prescribing opioids to people who never needed them in the first place and who are totally naive to the effects on the body and mind and find themselves stuck taking them to not experience the terrible withdrawals No doctor really explains clearly, that's a big shame.. Cuz those people just had a more or less injured body part that could have been simply treated with only a few days of opioids which need to be tapered down within one/two weeks..

I would love to tell you that the THOUSANDS of people that I know in recovery got sober because they felt bad because of wording. That is the problem with uneducated people today. i understand the heart of wanting to help!!! I DO!!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE if you do not know what it takes to get over addiction , STOP sharing your opinion. My opinion killed me a couple times and I'm positive it can harm you also. THERE IS A SOLUTION!!!!!!!!!!!! Its the 12 steps and practicing the spiritual principles that are imbedded in them. They have tried for years to find something better. PLEASE do not stop helping people but also understand that just because i am trying and want to be helpful does not mean i am helping. I could be doing more harm than good without realizing it. Again addiction IS NOT A DISORDER, we all are born iNTO SIN NATURE and this is what bends us to do things that are wrong and sinful. Take a person who is addicted to alcohol and this person gets help and stops drinking alcohol which is great but because of the SIN NATURE the temptation and desire will always be there most always going back.
Take another person who is addicted but is a True Born Again Believer and this person prays asking the Lord Jesus Christ to deliver him or her from alcohol and God heals and delivers this person and once this happens this person will never have the desire to drink alcohol again.
I’ve witness this with 3 different people two men and one woman who was addicted to alcohol heavy drinkers and God delivered each one instantly, after prayer they had no withdraws nothing walked away clean.

Ooooh substance use disorder huh??? It used to be called drug abuse. What happened? I also have a real
problem with the expression "drugs and alcohol" Alcohol is a drug too, a dangerous drug when you over do it.
I bet you anything that breweries, vintners and the makers of hard stuff made a secret little deal with
marketers and advertisers asking them not to call their products drugs. After all, that term has a bad
reputation. I also believe that in exchange for this little favor, the makers of all of that alcohol made it worth
the marketers and advertisers while..... wink-wink......P. S. Word choice matters.......

The work done by Sovereign Health in addressing Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is truly inspiring. Their comprehensive approach, including evidence-based therapies, medical treatment, and holistic support, is pivotal in helping individuals on their journey to recovery. Techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and medication-assisted treatment have been integral in achieving remarkable outcomes. The significance of these actions lies in their potential to transform lives, providing hope and healing for those struggling with SUD. This, in turn, builds a deep sense of trust between patients and Sovereign Health, fostering a supportive environment for recovery.
