Sorry to hear about your tank. Cranking the temperature up on the heater was a bit silly in the first place. All of the heaters we use don't actually put out a different amount of heat based on the set point, it just creates a set point that the thermostat uses to determine whether it allows power to flow or not (i.e. on or off).
Thank you for sharing the good with the bad. It helps us learn. And, it helps us newbee reefers to not to beat ourselves up when we make a mistake. Because we all have our own ups and downs. I have two heaters that I use just to warm up my water so this doesn't happen. Sorry about your loss
Ohhhhhh I feel your pain! I had a heater malfunction and spiked my tank from 77 to 98 degrees. I lost 4 corals immediately but all my critters survived. I lost an additional 2 more corals later on. I did the same thing with the ice packs ect. The biggest upgrade I did was an apex system with all the alarms ect. I am now notified when my temperate changes out of a set range and I can cut the power from the app. So sorry this happened. Your tank will come back more beautiful than before! I always say, reefing is nothing but a science experiment 😂😂
Bro I’m real sorry, been subscribed for a min and it’s sad to see a hit like that. But it’s a great opportunity to educate some of us new guys on how to bring coral back from that. Good luck my man
Brock, I am so sorry that happened to you. If it helps any, please know that you are not alone in this aquarium heater misery. I am in the middle of recovering from a brand new heater failing in the on position. As a result, all of my acropora are dead. I have since purchased an Inkbird heater controller. It's a miserable feeling, especially when you are losing years of growth. But we don't give up.👍🏾
Sorry for your loss bro . Luckily I brought a standard cheap heater for warming my r.o water .I know for a fact that I would also forget to turn down the heater temp . So Im pleased I purchased it and I'm sure my fish and coral are pleased too lol . Hope what ever you managed to save recovers quick dude .
The cheap aqueon heater is still my go to even after buying some eheim with more temperature control. The aqueon is fixed wattage and temp and can't be modified. I guess this is a lesson why that is ideal so this error could never happen, so thanks for letting me know not to switch to my eheim backups (will only use to heat up salt water mixes).
True fully if your water is good enough you can use just tap water that’s all I’ve been using in my reef tanks for about a year I made the switch when I did a lil experiment with playing with a tank that was on a RODI unit and one that wasn’t and honestly never seen a difference other then the rodi tank had a lil faster growth rate on the corals
Dang that sucks i feel for you man and appreciate the honesty. Really though once i set a heater it stays set cause its time taking. Once its set it wont work any hotter if you turn it up just leave it set. Tip i recently found wifi topfin pro heaters on clearance at some petsmart in the back, they are wonderful because no mechanical stuck on heater problems and i can get within a half degree tolerance.
Oh and placing a fan on the top of the water will cool a tank by maybe a degree every 30 mins to an hour - helps me through heat waves here where I live. I think that might be less risky than dumping ice in the tank.
That's such a bummer! This is why it pays dividends to have separate equipment for your water station or water change bucket, whatever you may use. For a cheap powerhead to mix the new saltwater and a good ol' Eheim heater, you are looking at $100 at the high end to keep everything in it's place. Sorry to hear about all the losses. 😞
You can only come back even better and stronger! Perhaps invest in a temperature controller with alarm for your heater, and set up redundancy. I'm in the process of setting up a salt mixing station and adding some cheap camera in the sump area to monitor everything when I'm away.
I feel so bad for you man. Thanks for sharing. I bought the apex JR controller and it has a temp check on it. Think now it was the best thing I could do. That and I have a cheap little aquatic life Rodi unit. It was $118
Cranking the heater above 78 won’t make it heat up faster. The heater is either on or off, turning the set point beyond tank temp just makes it stay on longer
Time to get a cheap heater to warm the water without pulling the dt heater, but you know that now. I’ll warm with the microwave a small amount that will fit in the microwave. Dont boil, just warm, pour into the water that is circulating and check temp. Sometimes I have to do this up to 4 time with a few cups of water but only takes about 15 minutes. Dont boil, only warm.
Not that I haven’t made any heater related mistakes myself, but I’m not following the logic behind increasing the heater temp to begin with. The heater is going to be either off or on. Increasing the temp setting will only make the heater stay on longer, it doesn’t actually get hotter or anything.
Daing that sucks. But helpful tip. Just like your house thermostat, just because you crank up the temp doesn't mean it will heat up quicker. An aquarium heater only turns on 100% then shuts off when proper temp has been reached.
Close call!!! One advice. Never use your tank equipped for anything else the their main purpose in the tank. Just get a heater, a power head and a small return pump for your water change water. That makes things much easier and of course safer
Sorry to hear. But Wow brother!. .I’m honestly surprised you trusted any heater enough to use one without a controller. Really?! I learned that lesson early many years ago when I ran two heaters for redundancy..but one Heater ended up “failing on”…wouldn’t turn off and cooked my tank. Dude.. Get an Inkbird controller ! They’re cheap and bullet proof! (Inkbird has a WiFi version for around $30). Cheers
That sucks man. It's a complicated hobby that is unforgiving. Small oversights often lead to these things after years of hard work and attention. Heartbreaking. Brock I use multiple heaters and run them on a heater controller it's saved my tank several times. Still I hate heaters definitely the weak link in our systems.
Something very similar to this happened to me about eight years ago with a 30 gallon cube. My father-in-law was checking on our home while we were on a 6 day vacation in the middle of summer in Georgia averaging 99 to 104° per day and we left the air to 68 well he said they’re not home I’ll cut it off, my internal house temp got to 88 -90 and my tank crashed
I can see that happening . a good controller is a ink bird temp controller with a high and low shut off. its also alarms on ur cell and u can turn it off remotely.
You did exactly what I recently did. change heater forgot to change the temperature back. I killed two very hardy impossible to kill fish 😢 a Denzel and a clown, but I’m new. I have an excuse.
Oh dear. I think the moral of this story is to have a separate heater or two to warm up new water. Honestly I don't think I would ever take the heater out of my sump to use for this, but I guess I can understand why some people might.
hi brock, have you ever done a all about on the bicolor goatfish? im wanting that fish and me and my wife get all of our basic quick facts from your channel haha was interested if you have ever covered it, or knew if it would be okay with a hawkfish
also i feel for your tank crash, alot of times we can take all the steps to prevent this and forget something so small noone would ever think about it without a paper checklist and it costs the ultimate price
Well, the mistake here was not to forget about switching off the heater, but to switch it on in the first place. In a reef tank you don't have to think about how not to make a mistake, but rather to arrange things in a way that the mistake is out of the ecuation from the very beginning. Sorry so much for your loss :'-( keep it as a learning and a piece of experience for the future.
My *redacted* told me a story about how his *redacted* smuggled an asian arowana and sold it to him for a cheap price. He killed it because he thought 2 heaters at 90+ would be better than..... So anyways, I don't like telling people what to do in this hobby but I feel like a lot of people think the end game of salt water is SPS. If someone told me they were considering SPS for the challenge I would say don't do it just to make your life harder. I don't like SPS because they look like a tiny animal that uses too much calcium. I like LPS and Soft Corals that don't grow too fast. If you're looking for a challenge I would say consider working on your magnum opus, the best tank you will ever build.
You’ll make it back, no doubt. Thanks for the video, we all make mistakes. Sad always to lose any of these pets. But the dying of these organisms release all sorts of toxins. Chemical warfare.
I once forgot to unplug the ato at water change and dumped the ro into the tank with kalk lucky i live in south florida i drove to the beach grabbed some water and did water change nothing died accidents happen
Putting kalk in your ato was the first mistake. NEVER do that. Just buy a dosing pump for it and have it set to a fixed amount so you can't nuke your tank multiple ways like you can with your ato.
@@reeffreak911 your missing the point. A doser has one way to fail on where an ato has multiple ways you can cause it to top off when you don't want to including sensors failing. You literally made your comment about how human error caused a failure. I'm not your friend but there is a saying in reefing, friends don't let friends put kalk in their ato. It's probably $100 to be way more safe.
@Bert236 i really didnt comment for advise cause theres always people that think they know everything i never asked what should i do i guarantee my tank is better then a bunch of people with fancy equipment just cause what you do works for you dont mean what i do dont work for me ive been doing it my way for 14 years and ive never had a major issue
@@reeffreak911 again you missed the point. All I am saying is there is more ways for failure when using kalk in an ato than a doser. You are trying to justify using the ato and there isn't any. Do what you want but you already made one mistake a doser couldn't make on your own.
Sorry to hear about your tank. Cranking the temperature up on the heater was a bit silly in the first place. Man that sucks... From the best of us, to the worst of us, we all mess up from time to time. Heres to a speedy tank recovery!
Aww man, that sucks 🙁 I appreciate you sharing the experience for us to learn from.

Some of the new pumps/power heads have temp alarms and will send push notifications

Instead of buying a fish or coral, spend $100 on an RODI unit

Yikes! It's amazing anything lived through that. Looking forward to the next/new creation. Keep on keeping' on, Brock!!! 👊
Dude sorry to hear that!!
At 9:00 what type of fish is that the red and white horizontal stripes and black spots 🤔 really neat looking fish
That sucks Brock. I would recommend you get a Neptune apex to control and monitor your tank! Have one and really like it!

You know a heater doesn't heat any quicker no matter what temp you set it to right?
I feel so bad for you man. Thanks for sharing. I bought the apex JR controller and it has a temp check on it. Think now it was the best thing I could do. That and I have a cheap little aquatic life Rodi unit. It was $118
Sorry for the loss. Water heaters only come on at 1 temperature weather it is set at 80 or 90, it's just takes time to adjust temperature.
Cranking the heater above 78 won’t make it heat up faster. The heater is either on or off, turning the set point beyond tank temp just makes it stay on longer
I can't believe how many people don't know this.
Same thing happen to me this past summer, heater malfunctioned & overheated my tank while I was away for vacation. RIP all fish n corals.
Ammonia and nitrites not nitrates are deadly. Nitrates of 60-100, not good but not usually going to kill corals, fish - maybe critters like inverts.
Man that stinks!. I feel for you man. Stuff like this is why I want an apex so bad. I'll be purchasing one very soon.

You should get some scallops or smaller clams or some tall corals.
Hey Brock sorry about your tank crashing, for new things to put in the blank areas I would say a Zoa garden or Xenia garden
i feel your pain sorry about that
RIP Corals, RIP Puffer
Inkbird or other temp monitoring temp device would have potentially prevented that.
As soon as you said you put the heater back in the tank I knew you forgot to turn the heater down.

What kind of tang was that black and orange with a white tail
What lights are you using on your tank?
Maybe try Getting Some special corals where you can make a video about that would be cool
great vid brock big fan of ur vids!
heaters don't heat faster by turning up the temp......
Always have separate equipment for outside of your tank.
Yay! 🎉🎉
You did exactly what I recently did. change heater forgot to change the temperature back. I killed two very hardy impossible to kill fish 😢 a Denzel and a clown, but I’m new. I have an excuse.
turning your heater up will not make the water warmer quicker it heats up the same just switches off at 90 instead of 75

Cranking a heater up doesn't make it run any hotter. Circulation helps more .
👍
You should probably get apex neptune system! To get updates
Wait puffer in a reef tank?
I always pour cold water into my fish tank i never thought to heat it up lol
Temperature: 72-78(75)
dKH 8-12(10)
pH 8.1-8.4(8.2 or 8.3)
Salinity 1.020-1.025(1.023)
RIP Pufferfish
Adjust the water heaters
just get a second and a third heater. a second one in case the main malfuncions and a trird one for water changes. eliminate human mistake
Forgot to turn the heater down
I will never do nems ever again . When they die they release chem and kill everything u have in your tank . I think I have it under control now
Turn the heater back down
Lol that’s why I don’t use heaters
You forgot to turn it back down to regular temperature
Turn down the heater.... dohhh!
Turn heat down
take a look at the underwater world on my channel there are all types of coral
Get an Apex, brother.
